AirMax98··on Streaming HTML out of order without JavaScript
I'd assume that the only reason one would need to know if chunks were incoming is to indicate a loading state in disparate parts of your webpage, e.g. chunk B has some widget that indicates chunk A is loading. In this case, you can probably work off the assumption that loading is the default initialization state, and use JS to communicate to the disparate parts of your page once on chunk A load. There may be something different that you're thinking about here though.
AirMax98··on From engineer to manager: what I love, what I hate
> First, you can easily take on a team with a wildly different focus — mobile developers, infrastructure, ML engineers. You'd need some time to get up to speed on the big-picture technical struggles of your new team, but most companies would take this shot. If you don't want to be an EM any more, you're well-positioned to move to a project or product management role.

Have to comment that this is just completely wrong and we need to stop telling ourselves this. I’ve experienced a lot of pain with EMs who have no idea what is really going on in a codebase because they have little domain expertise, no idea what tradeoffs are made by developers, and, crucially, do not ever punch the keys and commit anything. Why? Because frankly, they already have the job.

If you don’t ever interface with the codebase and don’t really understand what it does, but you still feel so inclined to steer the ship, you’re a product manager, not an EM. Possibly worse because there is more credence given to you? This is most likely advice for someone who just wants to issue vague edicts to a team that frankly does not need them.

AirMax98··on Google cites 'durable cost savings' as CEO Sundar Pichai warns of more layoffs
Github Copilot was the real killer for me. I would say around 80% of the time I no longer have to leave my IDE for trivial problems (e.g. I no longer Google the regex) that I'd otherwise just rip from Stack Overflow.
AirMax98··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
For even like, $500 you can have an absolutely kicking sound system. There’s no way that you’re going to get the range of big ass speakers in small headphones, but regardless this is kind of apples to oranges.
AirMax98··on TikTok Brings War Home to Your Child
As an example, “The Terror of War” turned many people in America against the Vietnam war.
AirMax98··on 95%-ile isn't that good (2020)
This is spam. I like to come here and want to contribute new ideas to the discourse here. I expect others to do the same.
AirMax98··on 95%-ile isn't that good (2020)
@dang — pretty annoying that this user is engagement farming by reposting classics. Not great behavior.

AirMax98··on Cybertruck Launch
Weight of Cybertruck per the very page associated with this post: 6,843 lbs — but your point still stands.
AirMax98··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
I’m in automotive tech school right now and the advice in the context of the automotive sector (not electronics) is to always crimp where you can, and only solder if you absolutely must.
AirMax98··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
Is it a death trap? Totally. But you could put a cat on it and dramatically reduce emissions. Consider also that initially producing a car is a major contributor to the environmental impact of a car.
AirMax98··on Plex Users Fear New Feature Will Leak Porn Habits to Their Friends and Family
It is illegal to be gay in 65 countries.
AirMax98··on Self-proclaimed 'gay furry hackers' breach nuclear lab
Any sufficiently advanced group of hackers are indistinguishable from gay furry hackers.
AirMax98··on US consumer spending dashboard built on data from 50M+ cards now on Snowflake
White screen on iOS… render error?
AirMax98··on WeWork Plans to File for Bankruptcy as Early as Next Week
I worked from a few locations in Philly and they were always totally empty. There was like a staff of 12+ well-meaning but extremely bored WeWork employees there attending to my needs, and the shitty YC startup I was at a few years back got some insane discount for a luxe plan there. Even in like, 2019 before their failed IPO it was clearly a dog company.

Really a marker that we are at an end of an era of excess — glad that I got to enjoy the ride of other people’s money, even if only in a slight way.

AirMax98··on I Won't Use Next.js
Exactly... and Remix is the old team from React Router, who break their API every version. I understand the author's arguments against Next.js, but having just set up a hello-world in Remix and being immediately confronted with a hydration error, I don't think Remix is the path forward either.
AirMax98··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
> Do you think Google's main motivation behind starting AV work 14 years ago and incinerating billions on it over the years was really rooted in speculative profit years down the road?

Honest question: why do you think Google funded this?

AirMax98··on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses: a turning point
It's a shame that I have to face the externalities of people paying for the privilege to do the dirty work of the surveillance state. If I was gonna wear this stupid shit, I had better be getting paid to so.
AirMax98··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
God damn man. How is this not an antitrust violation? The only answer is that we live in truly corrupt times. What is our answer to this?
AirMax98··on We migrated to SQL. Our biggest learning? Don't use Prisma ORM
Raw SQL will probably not give you the type safety of an ORM.
AirMax98··on Turbo 8 is dropping TypeScript
As someone who regularly writes both JS and TS, I'm fairly certain that this dichotomy is not real. There are places where TS makes more sense (eg large, trustless applications with many devs) and places where JS makes more sense (eg libraries that would otherwise need to have very abstract types).

I'd understand opting for either JS or TS as a policy going forward, but it's hilarious that this dude probably worked himself up so intensely about this that he brazenly rug-pulled his own repo and invalidated all open PRs.

AirMax98··on GM confirms $130k Cadillac won’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
Brutal. Operating these controls seems equivalent/worse for eyes-on-the-road than texting while driving.
AirMax98··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
> For what I can tell, Elon bought Twitter to take it off the stock market, fix it as a private company, creating growth and profitability, and then list it later to make his money back.

A reminder that Elon had to be sued into buying this company.

AirMax98··on “Coning” AVs is part of a long tradition of tactical urbanism
Weird, unexpected things happen on the road every day. Are we seriously going to potentially risk gridlocking a city (not to mention our personal safety) for the gains of a small handful of private corporation as they test this black-box tech out against us?
AirMax98··on “Coning” AVs is part of a long tradition of tactical urbanism
Feel like it is also a handful of radicals that want this unproven tech on the streets.
AirMax98··on Ask HN: What happened to Web3 startups?

AirMax98··on Ask HN: What happened to Web3 startups?
I was doing a lot of contract work a little over a year ago for about 3-4 different web3 clients. I’m back to working FT at a regular startup. The money isn’t there any more and that’s all that anyone who actually saw what was happening really cared about.
AirMax98··on Presentations and pitch decks by failures and frauds
Site is unfortunately down.
AirMax98··on AI song featuring fake Drake and Weeknd vocals pulled from streaming services
Kind of ironic here as Drake has pretty consistently stolen flows from his contemporaries. There are Drake tracks where he 1:1 takes flows from X, Baby Keem, Kodak... I'm sure the list goes on.
AirMax98··on Patriot Act on steroids: anti-TikTok Trojan horse for censorship, surveillance
Right, but the US is supposedly much more of a country of liberty.
AirMax98··on The Death of Personality (2017)
Taste is a constantly evolving thing. I am sure we are actually already in the midst of a shift away from flat design in certain more advanced design circles. Crucifying old styles can be helpful, especially when a new design flavor is explicitly reactionary, but is it not obvious that the trend from a decade ago is no longer trendy?

I am also somewhat doubtful that flat style was tied to specifically iOS 7, as opposed to the general zeitgeist of 2013.
