Ahmedb··on HP's CEO spells it out: You're a 'bad investment' if you don't buy HP supplies
Never ever ever buy anything from HP. They will brick it with a software update. If you need a lightweight printer go with Epson. You can refill them.
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: Are ad revenue still a viable way to monetize an app in 2022?
I just wrote about how ads actually hurt my user retention. My case is particular, my app is privacy-oriented

Ahmedb··on What are you supposed to do with old clothes?
In my country we give them to people with lesser means on the streets. When the winter season gets close some people will start collecting clothes to bring them to people living in the mountains
Ahmedb··on Hiring tool Homerun hit with cyberattack
The interesting part is "Homerun made an agreement with the cyber attacker."
Ahmedb··on Shadiest Job Offer?
Feels like the mafia hiring a software engineer :)
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: What's your “crazy CEO” moment?
this feels like an episode from the Silicon Valley show lol
Ahmedb··on Sorry, I won’t take your online coding quiz
My point is: to ace the test I need to prep for the test and that time is better spent on a take-home project.

Most tests I saw were between 1h30 or 2 hours.

Ahmedb··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2020)
Same! I applied for the Senior iOS position and I liked how the whole process was transparent and straightforward.
Ahmedb··on Tell HN: My permanently deleted Facebook account reactivated without my consent
I deactivated my account a couple of years ago and then realized someone has been impersonating me. So I reactivated and used the Jumbo app to monitor and wipe out all the content from both Facebook and Google. They run weekly checks and remove anything you setup including tags by other people.
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Instead of commenting your code once in a while make it default. I started always commenting and documenting my code (even the simplest parts for consistency) and it dramatically improved my productivity when I revisited if afterwards.

10x multiplier if you're working with a team.

Ahmedb··on Ask HN: Computer Science/History Books?
I was about to recommend Dealers of Lightning :D
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: Pull request body how detailed should it be?
All PRs should have a standard format it helps both the reviewers and the author.

One thing that works well is to use prefilled template with 3/4 main sections.

Something like:

### What 'Describe your change'

### Why `Describe what drove this change (bugfix, feature, crash,...)`

### Links 'Link to ticket or design`

### Testing `What should reviewers look for`

Ahmedb··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
Computer Security. Lots of software and hardware is getting shipped everyday and all of it is full of vulnerabilities.
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: How did you prepare for being a first-time parent?
The best thing we did was to pick up a well established book and avoid click bait articles. So many articles out there are pure garbage.
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: How do I earn more as a developer?
The best way is to switch companies every 2/3 years.

Also if you're working at what's called SSII, leave and find yourself a company that values Seniority. Most SSII don't value it.

Ahmedb··on Apple fails to block porn and gambling “enterprise” apps
There is a huge aftermarket for iOS Entreprise certificates. They either get stolen or attacker get their hands on the users credentials.
Ahmedb··on Is blog.fogcreek.com gone?
Thanks for the reply Anil! I followed a bookmark about Trello's tech stack that was published there.
Ahmedb··on Ask HN: Do quality web graphics, design and layout actually help businesses?
Like everything : it depends ! If you are let's say a paper company, you can afford to have a shitty website. Your business depends on sales people and the website is just a note out there that you exist.

But if you are an Ecommerce company your website is your business.

Now people, me included, will most likely trust a well designed website over a crappy one. Why ? because it shows that you care about it.

Look at the scams we get by email. The more well designed they are, the more likely we are to trust them. Thank god they're mainly plain text.
