Agustus··on DHS to start DNA testing to establish family relationships on the border
The point of this policy is to identify real familial relations with those crossing the border.

At the border there are instances of individuals using children to get special preference. The proposed idea will mitigate this issue.

Agustus··on Why a Traffic Flow Suddenly Turns into a Traffic Jam (2013)
Yes. The Highway Capacity Manual is a compendium if work by the traffic engineering professionals that examines data and observations to develop theories and approaches to traffic.

If you have a freeway with no on ramps nearby (usually 6 miles) then you should be free of traffic issues if the roadway throughput (1,500 per lane per hour), if it goes above that then crazy agents in the traffic do not allow for distances between vehicles and the brake of one individual creates a cascading effect. This is one cause of back ups.

The next is if you have an on ramp on said freeway, there must be enough capacity for the freeway to absorb those vehicles in. Additionally, you need to have space and time for the vehicle to merge in. If the driver does not feel safe or have enough distance, they will perform erratic moves to get on, which will slow down traffic in the aforementioned cascade.

If a highway on-ramp is failing, it is usually due to a political person pushing for it. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has a long list of requirements for a new ramp, and they are very well thought out to prevent issues and are good to work with.

Agustus··on Disney heir on CEO's $66M pay: 'No one on the freaking planet is worth that'
Because they do CEO work.

Look at any CEO who is doing a good job and you will see insane people who are getting low amounts of sleep, focused solely on the company growth to the exclusion of family time, and actually doing work. The work is comprised of tons of knowledge and skill sets.

Let’s take Elon Musk for example; disregarding whether the the company is well run or not. If you look at his work schedule, he is saying things like sleeping at the Tesla factory, working longer shifts, handling regulatory and politician issues, etc. The skill set required and time commitment is something that most people shy away from. Look at the horrified responses to Ma’s work dedication missives and you are on target where the normal person holds up. The insanes go to the political meeting on Capitol Hill, hire and fire subordinates, identify the direction of the company, and then execute on those decisions.

The skill set for the underpaid workers is easy to develop and put together. The dynamic life of a CEO is an item that is difficult as it operates in a dynamic environment that constantly changes and requires time and money investments that mean the employees who report to you may not have Christmas presents for their kids.

Firefighters and police officers are not socialized, they do not produce anything, a key tenet of socialism; they are extensions of the government in that they are operational activities that would be carried out by any type of government.

Socialism is the public ownership of the means of production.

Agustus··on Facebook Bans Far-Right Groups and Prominent Hate Figures
The issue is that there is a far-right and not a far-left. When you say: this is what is acceptable to us, there has to be a way to look at a side and say there is the limit.

The other issue is that the approach these days to minimize or eliminate opposition by making them a “hate group.”

Agustus··on Economics has failed us. Miserably
No, politicians abusing economists have failed the system. In each case a politician wants to accomplish x, they find an economist wanting to sell their soul by saying: x might be possible if y and z are held constant; but y and z are impossible to hold constant. Look no further than any administrations options:

1. Minimum wage, all economic 101 will tell you it does not work, yet, there is Krugman (who published a textbook stating it does not work) saying minimum wage can be raised with only a slight impact on the market.

2. Trade tariffs: they hurt downstream utilization, the aluminum prices increase has impacted the vehicle manufacturers in the US. Yet here we have the current administration saying: oh, it will work.

3. Rent control: it does nothing but gut the markets of rentable space, drives the landlords out of the market, and reduces available affordable housing. Yet, here is Oregon finding economists who say: maybe... it might work.

4. Cash for clunkers: it was a pull forward of purchases, any economist would shave told us that. In the end it just sucker punched the poor for seven years as all these used vehicles were removed from the market. Larry Summers selling this boondoggle never made sense.

What this shows is that the term economist is open ended with enough non science items being bantered about that cause these disasters in economics. Then when you call them out on their recommendations, they say it was not implemented with y and z implemented.

Agustus··on House of Representatives Passes Net Neutrality Protections
Negative. People who support net neutrality do not know what net neutrality really is.

Net neutrality is a push by the big corporations to avoid having to pay for the pipeline they use. Google, Netflix, and the like that use huge amounts of bandwidth. You are witnessing rent seeking 101, the corporations on one side are trying to get regulations to help themselves.

Agustus··on Why Don't Americans Understand How Poor Their Lives Are?
How can a dollar taken from me by the government and given to a poor person generate a positive cash flow overall? Has no one taken economics 101 when they get to government that they cannot understand the broken windows policy that Baathist put forward?

Step 1. I earn money.

Step 2. The government makes fallacious claim using whatever economist dujour is will to prostate themselves to the political party in need of economic justification (no worries both parties here in America have them).

Step 3. The government taxes me based on this reason a dollar. I am negative a dollar that I may have spent on something.

Step 4. My dollar is used to pay the administrative and bureaucratic needs of the system, god bless them if they can do it for less than thirty cents (after healthcare, salaries, fringe benefits, building costs, etc.) my dollar is down to $0.70.

Step 4. The money is given to a person in the lower quartile who then spends the $0.70.

After this process, anyone is going to say with a straight face that there is an overall increase of 12% to my dollar that was taken from me?

What if I was going to save my dollars up to start a business, which could really create wealth, instead I have to save up longer to start it.

If the economists were honest with that statistic, they would admit it is not the percent increase but the turn around time to spend the money, or a pull forward to quickly juice the economy.

Examples of the government being spectacularly wrong about telling me why they need to listen to economists:

1. Cash for Clunkers, hurt the poor with a destruction of used cars, pulled forward purchases.

2. Stimulus 2, is shown to have no impact on the economy.

3. Trade Tariffs, supposedly to help protect industries, they just happen to be the industries that are rent seeking. Hurts the poor by increasing prices.

4. Minimum wage: started for racist reasons, still has a disparate racial impact.

Agustus··on EU to ban plastic plates, cups, and cutlery by 2021
In the case of banning plastic bags, certain areas have seen an uptick in feces in areas because the homeless were using the bags for defecation and sanitation. The ban he had an impact, detrimental to the point where a first world nation is on track to have preventable disease outbreaks. There are cost benefit analyses that should be done prior to saying that a ban is better than nothing.
Agustus··on Can We Delay a Greenhouse Warming? (1983) [pdf]
The United States had developed a program to handle the nuclear waste. The Nevada site was determined to be the best option from a long term sustainability option. Then politics got involved to force the science off the table.
Agustus··on How Former Ref Tim Donaghy Conspired to Fix NBA Games
The NBA is in desperate need of a complete overhaul. We have this article that talks about the refs not making the sport fair. Franchise players are given leeway that would not be shown on a peewee court. And then this is complemented by last year’s article about which plays the players say they are actually going to participate in.

The NBA has become an entire Randy Moss organization: I will play when I want.

Agustus··on The Future of Electric Cars Is Brighter with Elon Musk in It
Nope. The smart money is on Tesla bankrupting and having a fire sale. Elon made a bad decision in how they setup the assembly lines of the Model 3 requiring rework on the assembly lines processes and more importantly capital expenditures (cap-ex). He almost destroyed the firm with a single tweet, almost was tied up in costly (time and money) SEC battles, and is always one interview away from saying the wrong thing.

The electric vehicle market is only viable because of the stupendous efforts Mr. Elon did in getting to this moment, however, if Tesla fails, the electric market will bear the stigma of: We tried that in 2010 and it did not work.

Agustus··on Seattle judges throw out 15 years of marijuana convictions
The problem in hiring criminals is that they have committed a crime. Once they are brought to justice and sentenced, there is no real rehabilitation program, why we have such a high recidivism rate in the states. The best example of this is sexual predator label, if our society honestly believed they had been redeemed they would not need the label.

The plan should be how can we get people who have been convicted to find ways to signal that they are rehabilitated. Otherwise, companies will avoid the risk of hiring a criminal and the liability of the lawsuit that might occur if said criminal commits another crime and the company is sued for hiring someone who had committed that crime before.

Agustus··on Google workers discussed tweaking search after travel ban
Your motte and bailey arguments on global warming are not the way to approach this. Global warming is not the phrase used in nomenclature anymore, it is climate change because the worry is that humans are throwing the climate out of stability. However, where true disagreement occurs from those arguing against climate change is the level of impact humans have on the climate. The various models have to make a determination on the feedback loop of carbon dioxide into the overall earth system; it varies from model to model. This leads to the issue which an honest debate can be had: If anthropogenic climate change is occurring that will cause real damage to the planet, what is the range to adjust to and what should be done about it? If you believe strongly that the damage is occurring, would you be willing to wage war on countries who disregard the globe's needs and bring them to heel for their non compliance? China is throwing out massive amounts of air pollutants, getting them to compliance means shutting down the electrical means of them bringing themselves out of poverty.
Agustus··on Paradise Lost: How Tourists Are Destroying the Places They Love
Or killed. Guidebooks are developed as guides not only for the good, but also the bad.
Agustus··on We designed Canada's cities for cars, not people – and the people are dying
Affordable housing is easy, increase the amount of available housing to allow for an increase in supply to drive down demand. If you do not increase available housing because of NIMBYISM, landlords wanting to keep supply limited, ridiculous rules for supply creation (San Francisco's rules and regulations for permit application are a great example), historic districts (forcing creators to adhere to maintain old and outdated buildings that require significant investment to meet codes), and politicians who would like to avoid having to figure out a new voter base, then you will never see houses that make financial sense to maintain.

As a thought experiment, how many more people could live in San Francisco city limits if you added three stories to the current limit (which is three I believe). You double the available supply, reduce / address demand and increase the opportunity for transit usage. However, if you proposed this idea, you do not have to worry about re election.

The politicians will say it is difficult, then use public funds to add 1,000 affordable homes, which is a drop in the bucket to addressing the supply issue. Do note, that when the affordable housing allotted to the skyscraper in New York City, the affordable housing facilities were given out by the city and conveniently, if I recall, a city counselor's relative got one of the homes.

Agustus··on As Barnes and Noble Struggles to Find Footing, Founder Takes Heat
You have a fixed asset (facility) and variable assets (employees). If you are trying to keep your failing company from hemorrhaging money, you can cut the liquid assets, because you have to keep lights on.

The situation at Barnes and Noble is dire. Anyone of us in the same position would have done the same thing, if you cannot admit this, then you need to look at financial sheets and what it takes to run a business.

Bearing this in mind, a similar action was undertaken by Home Depot where they cut their experienced staff loose to save monies, but were not in dire straits, I was on the same bandwagon as you about the move.

Agustus··on Elon Musk’s Funding for Tesla Wasn’t So Secure
Could you talk more about what makes him an appealing "guy?" His use of twitter would be a flag for most boards, so trying to see if there is some sort of Brittney Spears allure.
Agustus··on Uber Hit with Cap as New York City Takes Lead in Crackdown
The best note on this was from the Republican running for attorney general in the state in that he could not believe that the city was returning to the racist system whereby blacks would be having a reduced mobility option because of the known, yet not handled, yellow cabs not picking up blacks. A better system was identified that helped fix an issue and we have a city council so beholden to the taxi network that they are willing to screw over the populous.
Agustus··on Uber drivers “employees” for unemployment purposes, NY labor board says
It should be noted that minimum wage laws are not good, from their original implementation to today. The original law was put in place to keep unskilled persons (read minorities of color) from taking white's jobs. The hard working unskilled people were learning the skills to take the white people's jobs at a lower rate, so they passed a bill that made it impossible to effectively climb up the wage ladder. Today it is used to keep people subservient to the government when the wage gets higher than an economy can bear, look at Puerto Rico and how unemployment was so high, the only jobs available were government jobs. Any economist who can look themselves in the mirror will tell you this.
Agustus··on Why I Don't Buy Organic, and Why You Might Not Want to Either
Organic marketing is the result of our education system failing to properly educate our populace on chemistry and the marketing taking advantage of the failure. When you go to a conventional farm you can see the exact chemicals sprayed onto the crops in a precise manner, there are GPS programs to correctly allocate based on prior science efforts. Then someone noted that isolated chemicals were not natural and stated that natural was better for you; not questioning why spreading manure instead of the chemical necessary was better (which the manure now runs off and causes issues like when we did not have the agri stewardship we have today).

Organic marketing works because decision makers lack the critical thinking to question the efficacy difference. This being said, there is a difference in taste between and organic red delicious and conventionally grown red delicious.

Agustus··on How the Car Keeps Americans Apart
Those who are able to afford to live in affluent areas have high income jobs and can purchase the land surrounding their workplace, enabling non motorized conveyance or transit. The low and middle class, are forced out of the area, however these middle to low income jobs still exist and they need to be accomplished; think how far out a janitor is pushed away from a high income residence area before they can afford a place. An example of this is San Francisco's suburb expansion with the streetcar's development. As the streetcar line expanded, the lower income folks could afford better residences as opposed to having to live in a walking distance to their job, which drove up costs as individuals competed for residences.

The automobile enabled individuals to find affordable residences and provided middle income and lower income individuals the power to find jobs not within walkable distance of a residence or rail line. The automobile has been a net good for society, especially the low income or middle class.

Agustus··on Only 31% of California voters want to keep paying for bullet train
Killing it would be far sighted. Technology is improving transportation methods, we have buses and planes that can do the same thing as this train at much cheaper rates and without tax dollars to construct or maintain.

Agustus··on Facebook is America’s scapegoat du jour
1. Look at the playbook from an agnostic position instead. The reason the media gave candidate Trump the press was because, just like candidate Obama, sold eyeballs; Trump more so because he got both sides mad. Recall the puff pieces and the discussion of Michelle Obama's fantastic arms, that is nothing but puff and she moved the papers, so they covered the candidate more; to Hilary's detriment.

2. You need to think about the emails as compromised material and a failure to secure information. If you are an IT person that circumvents security protocols that then end up with trade secrets being exposed, would you be in trouble. The reason this was covered in the press was that it was classified information on an unsecured server.

4. I shake my head at this, Obama for America was doing the exact same thing in previous elections and no one batted an eye. Now that the people who were okay see that detrimental effects could happen there is concern. The simple thing to do would be to delete / minimize the information on your account.

Just remember, the media is horrible at their job; you have people who do not have the time to dig into a story, are influenced by their editors to drop stories if they attack a major sponsor, and then write stories that are stacked with grammatical mistakes.

Agustus··on San Francisco is officially $10B in the hole
I don't know why the public should be forced to have a reduction in public services because the public sector rolled over political interests to their favor.
Agustus··on Seattle's Minimum Wage Killed the 'Five-Dollar Footlong'
The companies do not need to raise prices, they have a few strategies to take:

1. Keep prices the same and hope to make it up on the increased traffic if competitors increase prices; employment costs stay the same.

2. Keep prices the same; adjusting the costs in employees to offset the higher value they must be returning.

Agustus··on Seattle's Minimum Wage Killed the 'Five-Dollar Footlong'
Minimum wage laws are not universally praised, those from the Austrian economic side would disagree with that statement. The minimum wage is as bad as licensing for hair wraps, it is a program to drive undesirables out of a market.
