AcerbicZero··on Steam drops Windows 7 and 8 support with the latest client
I like how were still re-living the classic MS 'every other OS is kinda ok' pattern.

95? Pretty ok. Idk, I didn't use it, I just watched my dad install it via like 25 floppy disks so we could play Tom Clancys SSN game. Worth it.

98? Kinda bad. Wasn't this the one to BSOD during the MS demo? Or was that ME?

2000/NT? Good. I know I kinda jumped between desktop and server OS's here, but hey, thats what I was doing with my life at the time.

ME? Bad. Might have BSOD'd during a MS demo.

XP? Good.

2003? Not great. Another server OS, but come on, it really helps the pattern, and what did 2003 bring that we didn't already have in 2000? Plus, 2003 really hated the upgrade path to 2008/R2 so I'm counting it.

Win7? Good.

Win8/8.1? So, very, very bad.

Win10? Good-ish. At least, after like, 12 months of updates and if you tear out all the nonsense ads + fix the start menu.

Win11? Cancer.

I wouldn't mind going back, but I can't re-live the horrors of windows 8 or 8.1 ever again.
AcerbicZero··on M4 Mac mini's efficiency
Hah, Tim Cook decision pretty much sums it up; its the kind of thing that wouldn't have lasted 5 seconds when placed in front of Jobs (although there is a strong chance Jobs would have demanded his own nonsensical addition/subtraction to the design).
AcerbicZero··on Visualizing World War II
Those are some impressive maps, with tons of foreshadowing, barely 9 days into the conflict.
AcerbicZero··on Sega is delisting 60 classic games from Steam
I mean, bold of you to assume that delisting a game from steam would stop me from acquiring it, if I wanted to, but ok.
AcerbicZero··on Sega is delisting 60 classic games from Steam
Probably this; I wonder if they're all going to Epic for a few years before coming back.
AcerbicZero··on Bird flu infections undetected
Sure, just ctrl-z the last ~60 years of population growth around the world; should be easy to get those chicken numbers under control then.
AcerbicZero··on A counter-intuitive guide to better leadership
One of my personal favorite reasons to yell at the sky is the legions of managers who style themselves as "leaders", who show up to provide exactly zero leadership (at best), and actively derail projects led by anyone other than them.
AcerbicZero··on The truth about latchkey kids
The truth about latchkey kids is that they're not a monolith; Shocking, I know, especially in such a small world of 8 billion people.
AcerbicZero··on Myths and Realities: Prosecutors and Criminal Justice Reform
I think were missing some key pieces of data to evaluate the claims made in this article; and I think the authors of this article know that and are actively trying to avoid looking at that data.

A fairly obvious example, imo - if police know their local prosecutor wont prosecute certain crimes (theft, property damage, drunk and disorderly), police tend to stop trying to arrest people for those crimes, and the overall rate for those crimes will go down (in the data at least). The victims on the other hand, tend to get little comfort from the nice looking excel charts.

Ive lived in enough west coast cities over the last decade to have a pretty solid understanding of how this particular game gets played, but I'd love to be proven wrong; Lets just see all the data eh?

AcerbicZero··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
What a lovely facepalm moment; anyone whos driven a car in the last decade could have told them this.
AcerbicZero··on ChatGPT Search
I don't mean this in a bad way, but seriously, about time. This was the best use case for LLMs on day one, imo.
AcerbicZero··on AI Flame Graphs
The fertility rate trends are missing the core point here. Your obesity and hunger examples actually reinforce the Jevons paradox - when a resource becomes cheap enough, we find ways to use it even beyond what seems rational. But more importantly, you're still not getting the original Malthusian comparison: Malthus wasn't predicting that cheaper food would make people eat more (obesity) - he was predicting that cheaper food would lead to more total people. Similarly, cheaper AI won't just make individual AIs consume more - it means AI will be deployed everywhere possible. The parallel is about multiplication of instances, not increased individual consumption.
AcerbicZero··on Google’s TOS doesn’t eliminate a user’s Fourth Amendment rights, judge rules [pdf]
I wonder what happened to fruit of the poisoned tree? Seems a lot more liberty oriented than "good faith exception" when police don't think they need a warrant (because police never seem to "think" they need a warrant).
AcerbicZero··on AI Flame Graphs
I think you're missing the broader analogy here; Cheap LLMs == LLMs everywhere. Cheap food == People everywhere.

I'm no Malthusian, but the paradox holds here pretty well.

AcerbicZero··on Why is Apple so bad at marketing its TV shows?
From my limited experience with Apple TV (Master of the Air and whatever that terrible Nasa one was) they seem to suffer from the same problem as most throw away TV shows on the streaming services - They lack writers who know anything about the subject matter and they couldn't care less about attention to detail.

They attempt to cash in on the emotional value of these dramatic events without doing the legwork required to do it properly and so it falls flat upon its face.

AcerbicZero··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
This would be nice, but my preferred method is simply to cancel the virtual card I used for the subscription and let them bill the void until they figure it out themselves.
AcerbicZero··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
Out of all the devices where having a physical airplane mode switch would be nice, I'd put the kindle pretty high up. Kinda sucks having a battery that lasts ~45 days in airplane mode, and like a week and a half when I forget to turn it off.

Did we get real buttons again? I can't see myself buying another one of these touchscreen versions....and apparently no real buttons :(
AcerbicZero··on PEP 762 – REPL-acing the default REPL
I'll have to check it out! :)
AcerbicZero··on PEP 762 – REPL-acing the default REPL
I have been "advocating" (i.e. complaining) for better REPLs basically the entire time I've been writing code - One of my favorite pasttimes is getting all flustered and trying to throw enough extensions and custom code to get an offline REPL.it style experience out of VS Code for whatever language I'm playing with at the moment, and lately its kinda been working (for Ruby, at least).

I am also very found of pointing out that Powershell still has one of the best ISE's/IDE's in the game for this kind of stuff. One window for editing, a terminal in which whatever you edit runs, and then access to every var/function/etc you just touched in that same terminal is a joyous experience that is shockingly hard to recreate for many languages. Hell half the time I'm just testing out random syntax or a portion of a function and being able to do that in the same session as the script I'm working is awesome.

With enough abuse VS code comes close (for Ruby at least, thank you Pry!) but it would be nice to get a similar experience with Python; I've used a few of the existing REPL options for python, but most of them require you to actually figure out pdb and even then it wasn't as tightly integrated as what I actually wanted.

AcerbicZero··on Exploding Head Syndrome: What We Know About This Mysterious Disorder
I had 2-3 sleep paralysis events over a short period of time; seemed mostly self inflicted due to poor sleep hygiene and lots of travel, but the first time was very disconcerting. I was "90%" awake, but unable to get my body to do anything for what felt like a long time. I didn't really feel a "presence" like other describe, but maybe I was just distracted.

The next time it happened (a few days later), I had a plan. I knew I had limited control over my lips and drooling/spitting, so I just did what I could with that until I couldn't breath; Didn't take long to wake up for real after that :)

AcerbicZero··on Why Not Comments
Hah, this is me :)

Half the time I start by just writing comments explaining what I'm about to try and do, then I go back and add comments about how things did not go as expected, and what I had to do to get it to actually work. Super helpful 5 weeks later when I have to actually see it again.

AcerbicZero··on Why Not Comments
I have learned to enjoy narrating my struggles in the comments, probably to excess; but it certainly makes it much easier to pick up a task again after I leave it alone for a week or two.

People rarely touch what I write, but if they do, and they want to strip the comments out, thats totally fine with me, just don't ask me how it works after you do :P

AcerbicZero··on The Internet Archive has lost its appeal in Hachette vs. Internet Archive
I wonder how legit it would be to have an AI scan over the copy, re-write it (as minimally as possible) in its own words, and then just distribute that.

Probably not all that legit, but arguably thats where we're headed anyway :/

AcerbicZero··on Panasonic Toughbook 40
I remember running into the old version of these super early in my little IT life, back when I was just at AIT; All that time playing with FCBC2's and Blue Force trackers ended up giving me an addiction to very graphically boring military simulation games, but I'm not complaining.

We also used to run HMMWVs over them on my deployments, mostly to prove points and win bets lol. That got stopped after an MRAP crushed one though - The rakkasans who know, know ;)

AcerbicZero··on Anthropic publishes the 'system prompts' that make Claude tick
My big complaint with claude is that it burns up all its credits as fast as possible and then gives up; We'll get about half way through a problem and claude will be trying to rewrite its not very good code for the 8th time without being asked and next thing I know I'm being told I have 3 messages left.

Pretty much insta cancelled my subscription. If I was throwing a few hundred API calls at it, every min, ok, sure, do what you gotta do, but the fact that I can burn out the AI credits just by typing a few questions over the course of half a morning is just sad.

AcerbicZero··on New anti-speeding system coming to Australia is dangerous
An overly sensitive speed alert system that triggers warnings for even 1 km/h over the limit is a misguided approach to road safety. It fails to account for minor fluctuations in speed that naturally occur during normal driving, potentially causing more distraction and stress than it prevents. This system could lead to drivers constantly focusing on their speedometer rather than the road, ironically decreasing overall safety. Additionally, it ignores the context-dependent nature of safe driving speeds and the small margins of error in both vehicle speedometers and speed limit postings. Ultimately, such a system risks creating overly anxious drivers and diminishing respect for speed limits, rather than promoting genuinely safer driving practices.

This will either be ignored after the first week, or more likely, removed via the aftermarket.

AcerbicZero··on A road safety plan that will lead to cars communicating with each other
Its also a problem on the roads for cars/motorcycles; 4+ lanes wide, with a car in each lane going 3mph under the speed limit totally oblivious to the world around them, as traffic piles up behind them.

Common courtesy should be a more important component of the whole education process.
