Abundnce10··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023)
I live in Washington (a couple hours from Vancouver). Should I apply or are you only looking for Canadian residents?
Abundnce10··on Show HN: I 3D scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza
I loved the tour! You did an amazing job.

I thought I should pass along that I found a misspelling. You wrote "sarcophaus" instead of "sarcophagus" in the text within the King's Chamber.

Abundnce10··on NodeMCU ESP32-C3 WiFi and BLE IoT boards show up for about $4
I love these ideas! I've always wanted to do home automation stuff but I worry about sending data to outside parties. Do you happen to know if Home Assistant monitors the things you have installed and/or keep track of the data your devices pass to each other?
Abundnce10··on South Dakota nurse says many dying patients still insist Covid-19 'not real'
> Articles like this strike me as propaganda. You can believe that covid 19 is real and covid 19 is deadly but still be against lock downs, despite what the propaganda would have you believe.

How is this article propaganda? The nurse said, "many of her patients don't believe they are dying of COVID-19".

The patients weren't arguing against the lock down, they were arguing that the virus isn't real.

How does Capital One give back 2% on all purchases? They must be monetizing purchase data as well, right?
Abundnce10··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained
I've been thinking about setting up a backup for my Mac for a while now. How long does it usually take to scan your folders during a backup?
Abundnce10··on An exoplanet has been found in the ‘Neptunian Desert’
From the article:

The Neptunian Desert is the region close to stars where no Neptune-sized planets are found. This area receives strong irradiation from the star, meaning the planets do not retain their gaseous atmosphere as they evaporate leaving just a rocky core. However NGTS-4b still has its atmosphere of gas.

Abundnce10··on Golden Rules for Making Money (1880)
The Capital One Venture Rewards card gives me 2% back on all purchases (I'm in the US). It comes with a $60 per year fee. So, if I spend more than $3,000 on the card over the course of the year it's a net positive. Now, they have access to all of my purchase data but I get around $700 every year to spend on travel. I've weighed the costs/benefits and it's worth it to me.
Abundnce10··on Eliminating Robocalls
All I really want to do is allow calls through to my phone that are stored in my contacts. If they're not in my contacts, I'd prefer not to be notified and have it sent to voicemail.
Abundnce10··on State-of-the-art text classification with universal language models
Don't hesitate to try the API out by pasting some examples to the white box on the site and pressing the "Try it out!" button, it's interactive

Sweet, I didn't realize it was interactive. I'll give it a try!

Abundnce10··on State-of-the-art text classification with universal language models
Very cool! It sounds like you followed a similar approach that the NY Times used in their recipe parsing approach, correct?

How does your API handle ingredients with multiple options (e.g. "1 1/2 cups seedless red or green grapes")?

Abundnce10··on State-of-the-art text classification with universal language models
This method dramatically improves over previous approaches to text classification, and the code and pre-trained models allow anyone to leverage this new approach to better solve problems such as: Finding documents relevant to a legal case; Identifying spam, bots, and offensive comments; Classifying positive and negative reviews of a product; Grouping articles by political orientation;

I'm starting a new project where I'm given many recipes and I need to take in a free form text of recipe ingredients (e.g. "1/2 cup diced onions", "two potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes", etc.) and build a program that identifies the ingredient (e.g. onion, potato), as well as the quantity (e.g. 0.5 cup, 2.0 units). Could I use something like Fast.ai to tackle this problem?

Abundnce10··on Man Accused of Making 97M Robocalls
But will it allow me to block all calls from 604-232 and 604-234 that are not in my contacts? Because I've noticed a similar trend where I get calls from numbers that begin with the same 6 numbers as my phone number.. but I have friends and family with phone numbers similar to mine and I don't want them blocked. Just ones not in my contacts list.

Edit: I read a review of Hiya and it sounds like they're still missing what we're all looking for: "Two things are missing. First, the ability to block all calls not in contacts. I have to download a separate app for that. Second, on inbound calls from the same area code (i.e., spoofed numbers) it does not pre-screen the call."

Abundnce10··on Ask HN: What books do you keep on your desk?
Which translation of Arabian Nights do you have? I've been wanting to read it for a few years now but haven't got around to it. I think this will the next book I read. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Abundnce10··on Machine Learning Crash Course
I think you're right. Did you happen to open-source your code from the hackathon? I'd love to take a look at your approach if you don't mind.
Abundnce10··on Machine Learning Crash Course
I have a new project at work: I need to take in a free form text of recipe ingredients (e.g. "1/2 cup diced onions", "two potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes", etc.) and build a program that identifies the ingredient (e.g. onion, potato), as well as the quantity (e.g. 0.5 cup, 2.0 units). Would machine learning be an applicable approach to solving this? Right now I'm just planning on using an NLP library to parse out the various parts of the ingredient text.

Abundnce10··on Cloud Firestore: A New Document Database for Apps
Can you give a rough estimate on the cost you pay based on the amount of traffic you get to this app? I'm considering using Firestore for my next project but I'd love to hear from your perspective if the cost outweighs the alternative of rolling your own backend.
Abundnce10··on Cloud Firestore: A New Document Database for Apps

I use Pass [0] to generate unique/random passwords for each site I sign into, I don't use the same password for all sites. I was just describing what I used for this instance (only characters and numbers), not what I do every time. I appreciate your concern though!

[0] https://www.passwordstore.org/

Abundnce10··on Launch HN: Lyrebird (YC S17) – Create a digital copy of your voice
Nope. Just letters and numbers. Same with my password.

I tried with my Gmail address and it worked fine. That address has no numbers in it. I used the same password. If you aren't prohibiting Hotmail addresses then it must be the numbers in the email address that are triggering some validation.

Regardless, I have access now. Looking forward to trying your product!

Abundnce10··on Launch HN: Lyrebird (YC S17) – Create a digital copy of your voice
I just tried to signup with a Hotmail email address and I got this error message: This email cannot be used to create an account. It might be due to your email domain name.

I realize Hotmail isn't the sexiest email provider these days but it's one of the more commonly used. Do you have a list of email domains you allow?

Abundnce10··on Bankrupt Mt. Gox may soon be able to pay its creditors
Doesn't it seem like they should sell the amount of Bitcoins needed to pay off any debt in fiat and then distribute the remaining coins to each user proportionally based on the amount they had on the exchange? Then you're not flooding the marking with 200k Bitcoins. Also, MtGox users are losing substantial value in this deal since the value of a Bitcoin is pegged at $483 and they're now worth well over $2,500. MtGox shouldn't become solvent once they pay all Bitcoins owed at a $483 price, they should return the remaining value to each user proportionally.

Doesn't this seem like the most logical/fair approach?
