AaronNewcomer··on Show HN: I built a no-BS recipe search engine
I think that for the ingredients you need to treat the entire phrase as a single unit. For instance, when i put in apple as an ingredient you return results that need apple cider vinegar or pineapple.
AaronNewcomer··on Ask HN: What is the easiest/fastest way to set up a blog for a developer?
I second Wordpress. It is easy, default themes look nice. You can do anything with a bit of customization and even download hundreds of thousands of premade themes inexpensively.

Especially this if you want to brand it yourself with your own domain and care at all about SEO.

I personally use Laravel Forge which in addition to its main use case of Laravel server management, give me one-click Wordpress installs on my AWS EC2 servers. And then route53 for the domains.

You could also easily launch a Wordpress server with AWS Lightsail and you do not need a very powerful server unless you become really popular. And even then there are pretty good free caching plugins, some installed by default.

AaronNewcomer··on Stamp collections are fetching whopping prices, but clubs need new members
I run the biggest international collectors show for my hobby and we always talk about the average hair color and old age.

I think that there are a couple big reasons for this. I think there is definitely an issue with less discretionary income for younger people to spend on collecting.

But I also think that there is a bit of a shift in the information that’s out there. Everything’s catalogued and priced and researched and it can just be really overwhelming for someone new to fit into expectations.

AaronNewcomer··on Facebook plans to change its name as part of company rebrand

AaronNewcomer··on Back Orifice (1998)
Yeah I remember one of these would allow you to somehow make a jpg executable and then would download the full payload for the rest of the tool. Image sharing over AIM and the like would make direct connections when transferring so you had to look up their IP address with netstat or something while the picture was transferring to them. And then keep checking to see if they actually installed/opened it.

AaronNewcomer··on A hoverboard burst into flames. It could change the way Amazon does business
Probably any marketplace that facilitates the whole transaction.

Craigslist and Facebook marketplace (the general use case of it) show the ads but you go pick up and pay the seller in person.

3rd party marketplaces on Amazon, Target, Walmart, Lowes, Zulily, etc where a customer is shopping on and paying that company directly and receiving confirmation emails and etc and can even use store-payment-cards would be the target for this.

AaronNewcomer··on Amazon Is Allowing a Chinese Knock-Off to Destroy Our Startup
No, he means that the OP has a cropped version of the image and the “counterfeiter” has an uncropped version of the same image.

If the counterfeiter really stole the images how could he have a less cropped version.

Maybe Amazon also sees things like this and decided they can’t tell who stole from whom.

I don’t that is the case here but it is possible Amazon gets all sorts of notices like this from people who aren’t as genuine and may be lying to remove a competitor.

AaronNewcomer··on It’s time to remove news from Facebook and Google
There are so many websites I visit because they were linked somewhere. I’m sure if Google stopped listing these websites I would never purposely visit la times or Washington post. Or especially local affiliate websites when there is some breaking news somewhere local. Who would know to go there?

I can only imagine it would be even more of a death blow to any news website that is local rather than national and not a top news source that people know by name enough to type in.

AaronNewcomer··on It’s time to remove news from Facebook and Google
Yeah. The premise of this article is just silly when the vast majority of news reports are covered by many many websites all vying for more traffic to their web properties.
AaronNewcomer··on Why Military History?
No yeah, I wrote in my article that this thing is “amazingly intense, aggressive, rooted in French military pride and filled with the glories of warmongering.” But the gist is that they look into it to make sure they don’t repeat mistakes and so that they understand their past so they can better appreciate how good life is now.
AaronNewcomer··on Why Military History?
I recently picked up the 1834-1842 issues of Journal Des Armes Spéciales which was a French technical journal about arms and armament. ( https://aaronnewcomer.com/document/journal-des-armes-special... ). An article introducing it gives a pretty good reasoning for the importance of studying military history, translated:

“Let the lessons of history not be lost for us, that the progress of military art is marching in concert with those of the industrial arts. If we are richer and more enlightened, let us also be stronger and more valiant. Let us not let this sword rust in our hands that Brennus and Clovis left us, that Charlemagne and Napoleon walked all over Europe; then all the tyrants and all the barbarians of the earth will not prevail never against a nation that can present a compact mass of eight million men, ready to pay their blood for the defense of the fatherland. It is for the purpose of contributing to such a glorious result that we are undertaking today the publication of the Journal Des Armes Spéciales. Happy if we can contribute to maintain among the French, the sacred fire, the taste for arms that have always distinguished our ancestors; if we can root out these alluring doctrines, but disastrous, which tend to effeminate one whose people will always be passionate about war, and who will always support or the terror of Europe. The more the sweets of peace take root in the heart of our statesmen, the more the taste for peaceful pleasures tends to spread, the more gold finally gains consideration among us, the more urgent it is to return the honors due to it to the iron. Then the French people, drenched by the revolution, will again travel fourteen centuries of existence; if he conquers, they will be peaceful: he will have allies, friends and no subjects; it will use force only to resist an unjust aggression, to defend its allies, to avenge the injury done to only one of its citizens, and if some reckless enemy were to challenge in combat the great people, one would see reappear the great army more numerous and more formidable than ever.”

AaronNewcomer··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
There is one big change that happened recently that could explain this as well. I never posted my PHP jobs on indeed. We always used glassdoor and LinkedIn. Now that indeed has purchased glassdoor and all of those job postings automatically go to indeed that could explain a huge rise in jobs there when in actuality there was always this many jobs.
AaronNewcomer··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way

AaronNewcomer··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
This is silly. Lots of large companies use php for their internal applications. I built a php based backend for one of the largest sellers on amazon, in php. That company is approaching $1B in annual revenue.

Php allowed my team to move amazingly fast and deliver what the business needed very quickly. In e-commerce and dealing with Amazon specificity, rules and methods change monthly and you always have to be able to quickly pivot to remain competitive and I think php was a big factor in allowing this to happen.

AaronNewcomer··on Geneva introducing a minimum wage of $25 an hour

AaronNewcomer··on Amazon can smell the blood in Ads. And it’s going for it
Anecdotally, I would not say that prices increased due to this specifically. Margins were slightly affected but we made it up in volume.

It incentivized better utilizing data to make smarter choices, and even looking into packaging efficiencies to reduce the volume of the package (and incur less storage and fulfillment costs)

AaronNewcomer··on Amazon can smell the blood in Ads. And it’s going for it
My previous company spent tens of millions on Amazon ads. There was definitely a shift in the past couple years to where it became a necessity. Those in charge just shrugged it off and said it was all part of the game.
AaronNewcomer··on Why aren’t you more serious?
Email through jetpack plugin on a Wordpress blog. I have actually thought about looking into suppressing certain things but I am not sure there are many options for this plugin. I could create a different post type maybe as this only sends out updates on regular blog posts.
