AaronAPU··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
Well “fortunately” I’m forced to have a strict diet due to some sort of IBS issues. For that, I use the MacroFactor app and talk through my daily recipes with ChatGPT, making sure to hit the macros and calories targets while also optimizing for heart health and IBS. Fat, protein, carbs, fiber. Taking AG1 to fill gaps.

For fitness I’m obsessed with biking so I do like 90 minutes of endurance/tempo pace 5 days a week and usually a race once a week. Zwift is great with a Tacx when weather is bad (often).

That isn’t a time option for everyone but it is also likely well beyond what is necessary for most people.

I also don’t drink or smoke or vape which I think is important.

Not going to say I’m an expert or an exemplar of health but I am really trying everything I know to do at this stage.

AaronAPU··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
They have me on blood pressure meds and do the usual blood tests, the tests I considered have been elective and I requested them explicitly. Just haven’t followed through due to aforementioned hesitations. I’m very much aware heart issues run in the family and that I have symptoms.

But I would be very happy to do any elective non invasive tests. On the fence about going beyond that until/unless the Dr. flags it as needed.

AaronAPU··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
I was planning to start getting scans ordered for specific risks like aneurysm or heart attack but what holds me back is the idea the scans will harm me worse than those things.

It is very difficult to have any level of confidence with the medical industry so my current approach has been to eat as healthy as possible while staying as fit as I can without undue extreme stress.

AaronAPU··on A.I. and Social Media Contribute to 'Brain Rot'
Reading this, I have no idea which of the thousands of new media silos you inhabit. But they all tell different mutually exclusive narratives.

So statistically, even if one is purely honest and accurate, most likely you aren’t in that one particular silo.

AaronAPU··on The trust collapse: Infinite AI content is awful
Yeah, and I don’t mean to be complaining. I made the choice to move to the middle of nowhere and change industries. None of my contacts have relevance in this one and there is no presence in my area for networking.

In any case, I can’t complain anyway because I have received my share of favorable coverage. It is just less frequent when you don’t have the personal connections.

AaronAPU··on The trust collapse: Infinite AI content is awful
YouTubers and other social media influencers are a sort of royalty now, getting to decide by fiat which companies live or die.

But you can’t really even make the case to them anymore because like you said they can’t/won’t even read your email.

What mostly happens is they constantly provide free publicity to existing big players whose products they will cover for free and/or will do sponsored videos with.

The only real chance you have to be covered as a small player is to hope your users aggregate to the scale where they make a request often enough that it gets noticed and you get the magical blessing from above.

Not sure what my point is other than it kinda sucks. But it is what it is.

AaronAPU··on Why aren't smart people happier?
It really is wild the degree to which you can simply dictate your own mood.

If I catch myself feeling grumpy or down, it is pretty easy to reframe and summon genuine happiness.

Even during intense suffering of various kinds. To a large extent you get to decide which universe you live in.

AaronAPU··on Why aren't smart people happier?
There is often a “middle of the bellcurve” effect where being exactly average means you have the highest possible number of people who think like you do.

That has obvious advantages with things like marketing and identifying what people want.

Then of course you have a million other traits like work ethic and being a sociopath which can grease the wheels of success.

AaronAPU··on Fiber reduces overall mortality by 23%
I had chronic digestive issues which almost completely disappeared after taking Metamucil.

Then, about a year later changed my diet and started tracking macros. Was able to stop taking Metamucil after balancing them properly.

I’d consider Metamucil a bandaid, it is easier to supplement than rehaul your entire diet. But the latter is better in the long run for sure.

AaronAPU··on Update and shut down no longer restarts PC, 25H2 patch addresses decades-old bug
I have always blamed my Dell desktop for this.

Incredible.

AaronAPU··on Self-help gets philosophical
The phrase “low trust society” comes to mind.

Cool, stay in your other country and I’ll keep smiling with my fellow Americans.
AaronAPU··on John Carmack on mutable variables
I haven’t noticed that, will have to keep an eye out. Could help explain some quality inconsistencies.
AaronAPU··on John Carmack on mutable variables
I spent a decade or so working on video codecs with an international team, and there was sort of an unwritten rule that code shouldn’t have comments and variable names shouldn’t be descriptive (english language couldn’t be assumed).

Which sounds really awful, but after a while it forces you to parse the logic itself instead of being guided by possibly-out-of-date comments and variable names.

I now prefer less verbosity so that probably explains why I’m a little out of distribution on this topic.

If you looked at any of my code prior to that job, it was the polar opposite with very “pretty” code and lengthy comments everywhere.

AaronAPU··on John Carmack on mutable variables
Probably exaggerated a bit with that phrasing (“outrageous” seems similarly hyperbolic ;))

But any variable which I’ve not already marked as const is pretty much by definition going to be modified at least once. So now instead of 1 variable name you need at least two.

So now the average number of variables per non-const variable is >= 2 and will be much more if you’re doing for example DSP related code or other math heavy code.

You can avoid it with long expressions but that in principle is going against the “name every permutation” intention anyway.

AaronAPU··on John Carmack on mutable variables
This would require coming up with an order of magnitude more variable names which is just unnecessary cognitive load.
AaronAPU··on Some people can't see mental images
omg! That was every trip to my grandparents house my entire childhood. I couldn’t “actually see” the skateboarder, but it was enough to serve as entertainment.

Mine was usually some sort of superhero who did flips over things and picked them up and whatnot.

I can’t imagine if you could “actually see” the skateboarder how much less boring those rides would be.

AaronAPU··on Some people can't see mental images
I can’t generally “literally see” my mental images. But on a few rare occasions in my life, I did. I don’t know why, and it was brief, but at least I can easily believe now that some people do it all the time.

When it happened to me the few times it was an otherwise very mundane day and it felt very natural. It was overlayed onto whatever else I was looking at and could persist with eyes closed.

Honestly the experience kind of cheapened art for me to an extent since you either have that cheat code or you don’t.

AaronAPU··on Feed the bots
You mean with engineers or with AI?
AaronAPU··on Feed the bots
That is literally what my post said, except the scraper has more leverage than is being admitted (it can learn which pages are real and “punish” the site by requesting them more).

My point isn’t that I want that to happen, which is probably what downvotes assume, my point is this is not going to be the final stage of the war.

AaronAPU··on YouTube Just Ate TV. It's Only Getting Started
Everything was fake and centralized now it is fake and decentralized. I’m not entirely convinced it’s better. Maybe.
AaronAPU··on Feed the bots
The crawlers will just add a prompt string “if the site is trying to trick you with fake content, disregard it and request their real pages 100x more frequently” and it will be another arms race.

Presumably the crawlers don’t already have an LLM in the loop but it could easily be added when a site is seen to be some threshold number of pages and/or content size.

AaronAPU··on 'Attention is all you need' coauthor says he's 'sick' of transformers
I have my own probabilistic hyper-graph model which I have never written down in an article to share. You see people converging on this idea all over if you’re looking for it.

Wish there were more hours in the day.

AaronAPU··on Where's the AI design Renaissance?
It doesn’t lead, but it brings up to speed.
AaronAPU··on VST3 audio plugin format is now MIT
I still get customers requesting that I distribute VST(2) builds. Some old DAWs and apps still can’t load VST3. Thus far it hasn’t been possible due to licensing restrictions with commercial plug-ins, imposed by Steinberg.

I wonder if that will change as well..

AaronAPU··on The death of thread per core
I did mass scale performance benchmarking on highly optimized workloads using lockfree queues and fibers, and locking to a core almost never was faster. There were a few topologies where it was, but they were outliers.

This was on a wide variety of intel, AMD, NUMA, ARM processors with different architectures, OSes and memory configurations.

Part of the reason is hyper threading (or threadripper type archs) but even locking to groups wasn’t usually faster.

This was even moreso the case when you had competing workloads stealing cores from the OS scheduler.

AaronAPU··on The AI bubble is 17 times bigger than the dot-com bust
Number go up isn’t a use case.

This seems to be the disconnect.
