AWildDHHAppears··on Google News Should Remove Paywall and forced adblock removers from feed
I pay for NY Times and WSJ. If more people did that, we'd have less malicious "fake news."
AWildDHHAppears··on Theranos and David Boies Cut Legal Ties
You know who did commit fraud and was never, ever prosecuted? The millions of homeowners who applied for mortgages they had no way of paying back.
AWildDHHAppears··on To the 4 white male policemen who beat me for checking the health of [detainee]
Without any facts, I'm skeptical. He should either move on with his life, or make a formal complaint and/or a lawsuit.

Taking the middle road with a story with few details on Medium doesn't help anyone.

AWildDHHAppears··on Teen Creates “Sit with Us” App for Bullied Kids
Won't the bullies use this app to lure "losers" over and then make fun of them? I don't see how this will help.
AWildDHHAppears··on How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat
This bad advice may have directly contributed to the deaths of millions of people.
AWildDHHAppears··on Sophisticated OS X Backdoor Discovered
I think he's paid by Apple.
AWildDHHAppears··on Association Between Cesarean Birth and Risk of Obesity
Why would a person who had had a "Cesarean Birth" choose to eat more? This raises more questions than it answers.
AWildDHHAppears··on I lost my OpenBSD full-disk encryption password
That's why I keep them written down in my safe!
AWildDHHAppears··on Can Facebook really make ads unblockable?
I'd be happy if all ads became served from the same domain, an integral part of the page (no popovers, popups, focus stealers, etc) and not-dynamic. That would remove 90% of my objections to them.

Third party ads with javascript can and have been used to introduce malware, through deception or zero-day/drive-by exploits, even on otherwise reputable sites. It is for that reason that I block ads.

AWildDHHAppears··on How Home Loans Have Changed since 2000
If everyone had to pay 20% down, house prices would be lower.
AWildDHHAppears··on The cost of small modules
In pure functional programming, which is most of what I do, there are zillions of "small modules" and everything seems to work just fine...
AWildDHHAppears··on How the Hunt Brothers Cornered the Silver Market and Then Lost It All
It reminds me of IPV4 addresses. All this panic about "we're going to run out and the Internet will stop working" yet we haven't seemed to run out. We keep finding more! And we have an obviously finite supply.
AWildDHHAppears··on What Makes a McMansion Bad Architecture?
The guy likes his houses symmetric. That's about all he said.
AWildDHHAppears··on Albuquerque program hires panhandlers to work in maintenance jobs
No. I am concerned about the city's property being stolen.

The recyclables belong to the city once I leave it out for recycling. They collect the value from it, including any deposit value.

As a Taxpayer, I want this value to go to the city.

AWildDHHAppears··on A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100M Volkswagens
Yes, but SDR allows for the quick and easy experimentation, even if the hack ends up being implemented on other equipment.
AWildDHHAppears··on Albuquerque program hires panhandlers to work in maintenance jobs
Exactly right. People _steal_ recyclables in my area, too, and many Progressives seem fine with theft and the unreported income that results. We have many other criminal acts (which have been caught on camera) associated with this, including rummaging through cars and package theft.

When "three strikes" was foolishly overturned by pro-crime Californians, the amount that you have to steal to be charged with a felony also increased. So people can steal items from cars and doorsteps, in addition to recyclables, and never have to worry about spending a day in prison.

AWildDHHAppears··on A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100M Volkswagens
Nobody (including me!) expected extremely cheap software-defined radio transmitters and receivers to be available. A short key and a rolling code seemed like a good enough obstacle for a door lock 20 years ago.
AWildDHHAppears··on Ask HN: Anyone here use a Hackintosh as one of their main machines?
If you haven't looked at windows lately, look at Windows 10. It's wonderful; I "switched back" from Mac, and so has everyone else at the office, except for ios development.

So you can get exactly the hardware you want and a stable experience.

AWildDHHAppears··on The fight to cheat death is heating up
With obesity at 66% (in the United States) I think the average life expectancy will start going down.

1900/day isn't very extreme. It's what I do on days I don't go to the gym (and 2200/day on days I do go). And I'm not underweight either--I'm within the healthy BMI range. People just eat too much food!

AWildDHHAppears··on Researchers crack open malware that hid for 5 years
That's another great idea! Like the cages around thermostats!
AWildDHHAppears··on Researchers crack open malware that hid for 5 years
And that's why you can still buy new i7 and Xeon motherboards with PS2 keyboard connectors--because some sites don't want there to be USB ports on the computers.
AWildDHHAppears··on Apple should stop selling four-year-old computers
Apparently, The Mac Faithful do!
AWildDHHAppears··on Apple should stop selling four-year-old computers
Mac LCD monitors have a LED back light that's too blue and too narrow a gamut to do color grading. Yes, it's true that some of the early CRT machines were capable of this.
AWildDHHAppears··on Apple should stop selling four-year-old computers
Real "creatives" _never_ preferred Macs. Mac, until very recently, didn't have any way to calibrate a monitor (and you had to buy a 3rd party monitor to get a full-gamut display), or 10 bit/channel color. For all our color-critical work at our shop, we _never_ used macs.
AWildDHHAppears··on Moving to GitLab: Yes, it's worth it
So you're saying there would be more mentally challenged people committing changes to open source projects, if we didn't use the word "retard" in a scientific sense referring to digital filter algorithms?
AWildDHHAppears··on Moving to GitLab: Yes, it's worth it
Yes. She indicated that it doesn't matter how the word is used, some will see it as aggressive.

As she appeared to be a non-technical person mysteriously employed by GitHub as some consolation to some organization (IIRC it was called the "Ada Initiative") I realized that github is no longer a technology company. It's a Social Justice company. Good luck to them--I don't even disagree with the basic premise--but I like my git repo companies to be worried about git.

AWildDHHAppears··on Brains of overweight people look ten years older than those of lean peers
Another question is why does "society" honor and accept Obesity as a lifestyle choice, when its openly critical of tobacco addicts and heroin addicts? What's the difference?
AWildDHHAppears··on Facebook bows to anti-science activists, shuts down ‘We Love GMOs and Vaccines’
Maybe, but do you think Facebook should delete a opinion group "We Love GMO" when they're not being obscene, harassing anyone, etc? Obviously, it's their right to, but _should_ they? That's the question here.

Why are you afraid of rational discussion?

AWildDHHAppears··on Moving to GitLab: Yes, it's worth it
Interesting. For projects that don't need a "community" we've been using Amazon CodeCommit.

We don't like to use Github anymore because of the politics there. Example: We had a project involving software filters that included this sentence in the description:

> Phase is related to time, but a pure time delay does not involve any phase shift. A pure time delay or "group delay" is constant with frequency. Phase shift varies with frequency and can advance or retard as the frequency changes.

We got a note from a woman who works at github who was apparently scanning open source projects for "offensive" words. Our project was flagged for the use of the word "retard".

We removed our project and never used github again.
