AWildC182··on Cryptocurreny crime is way ahead of regulators and law enforcement
https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption

The amount of energy used by bitcoin is many zeros larger than any of the examples listed and is used by a group of people many zeros smaller than any of the demographics mentioned. This is a pretty easy case to argue objectively, particularly because there are alternatives to proof of work, but they aren't as sexy as running a server farm full of FPGAs, GPUs, and ASICs.

AWildC182··on FAA Files Reveal a Surprising Threat to Airline Safety: US Military's GPS Tests
It's not that awful of a problem. Simply making the antenna directional enough is a solution, such as using a phased array coupled with an IMU to tell if the signal is coming from a known satellite location.
AWildC182··on FAA Files Reveal a Surprising Threat to Airline Safety: US Military's GPS Tests
Logging software uses GPS. If they jam it they can go off route or otherwise not have big brother watching them. I imagine it's becoming somewhat less prevalent though, as it's widely known they do it, enforcement has ratcheted up, and it's obvious when trucks just drop off the face of the earth all the time. It's not like 15 years ago when cell networks were much more sparse.
AWildC182··on FAA Files Reveal a Surprising Threat to Airline Safety: US Military's GPS Tests
Try explaining that to the FAA. They've been shutting down more VORs and airways every year.
AWildC182··on FAA Files Reveal a Surprising Threat to Airline Safety: US Military's GPS Tests
That doesn't really have anything to do with the GPS jamming tests. That's because GPS isn't actually global, or at least wasn't a couple decades ago. What you're checking is the number of satellites available on your flight path at the time you'll be there such that you can create an accurate and redundant 3d fix.
AWildC182··on Cryptocurreny crime is way ahead of regulators and law enforcement
Also morally repugnant? Whataboutism.
AWildC182··on Cryptocurreny crime is way ahead of regulators and law enforcement
This cannot be repeated enough. Bitcoin is consuming as much energy as a small-medium sized country and all so a tiny minority can speculate on it.
AWildC182··on Unlocking LUKS2 Volumes with TPM2, FIDO2, PKCS#11 Security HW on Systemd 248
By my understanding, systemd is just handling the unlocking process and merely provides LUKS with your password/token communication. LUKS is the part that actually needs to be secure beyond systemd just not emailing your password to the gubment/north korea/4chan. LUKS unlocks its key store with the info you provide it which is used to decrypt the drive.
AWildC182··on California’s container-ship traffic jam
And even if they weren't more out less directly equitable, how long would it take for one to pull up the other.

China has 4x the population the US does. The US won the cold war because it had a larger economy, partly because it had a larger population. That's not how any future conflict is going to shake out

AWildC182··on California’s container-ship traffic jam
So? Even if bad metrics push the inevitable a few years down the road it's still inevitable. China will become the dominant world power some time in the next decade or so and there's not a whole lot we can do about it.
AWildC182··on GitHub has received a DMCA from MPA about torrent tracker nyaa.si
IANAL but best I can tell it is with regards to filing the takedown notice rather than taking them to court. If it is just the sending of a takedown notice, then holy fuck have they abused it.
AWildC182··on GitHub has received a DMCA from MPA about torrent tracker nyaa.si
I suspect one could make a case, given the history of the MPA/MPAA that they've left both the realm of "good faith" and "belief" long ago. Each incident doesn't get to occur in a vacuum. You can't claim blissful ignorance forever.
AWildC182··on Parler partially reappears with support from Russian technology firm
The official number for 2020 appears to be 25 (not including last week), however conservatives seem very interested in representing this as a list of "people BLM murdered" when it's really a list of all deaths due to political violence. It includes people who were killed by police, individuals murdered by far right individuals, and that one guy shot by a left wing extremist at a protest.
AWildC182··on Parler partially reappears with support from Russian technology firm
I suspect you mean:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_and_controversies_dur...

...which is a list of all deaths surrounding the events. There are only a few that actually fall within the bounds of the question:

AWildC182··on Viscous Liquid Monopropellant, new non-explosive and non-toxic rocket fuel (2019)
You know, I'm totally down with kerbalspaceprogram.com becoming a de-facto scientific journal for space exploration papers.
AWildC182··on Parler partially reappears with support from Russian technology firm
> far more damage and fatalities

Name the fatalities from BLM activities.

AWildC182··on Parler partially reappears with support from Russian technology firm
This is an interesting take that I'd like to dig into a little more... Do you mind expanding on if there are any known ways to achieve this?
AWildC182··on Jeffrey Epsteins Little Black-Book Unredacted [pdf]
Not unredacted.
AWildC182··on Intel CEO Bob Swan to step down, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger to replace him
Yea, I'm not sure what their plan is other than to keep trying to sell to institutions until everyone makes the switch to someone else.

If they actually want to survive long term, there are two paths as I see it:

A) Be legitimately better than AMD, this could include opening up the management engine, much higher performance chips at lower price points, or some sort of space magic utilizing their Altera acquisition.

B) Embrace RISC-V and push it to laptops and desktops HARD, while not pulling the Microsoft Embrace Extend Extinguish™ play. If they go this route then their stock becomes an exceptionally strong buy IMO.

AWildC182··on Drone Footage of Arecibo Observatory Collapse
So many people commenting about Spacex and such but I feel they're missing the point. This marks the end of an era where publicly funded science was driving the frontiers of human knowledge faster than ever before.

We went from having never left the ground under power to the moon in 65 years.

65. Years.

And in the subsequent 51?

We've gotten really good at making cheap electronics and our consolation prize is a low cost-to-orbit with no concrete plans to do anything extraordinary with it. Cool.

This feels truly like the end of an empire.

AWildC182··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2020)
For those that are unaware, this project is absolutely amazing! They're an independent NGO launching a goddamn satellite to be able to locate emitters and pressure corporations and governments into behaving. Good luck on your launch!
AWildC182··on The Nintendo Switch uses my open source code
Why do megacorps need charity? Additionally GPL doesn't have any financial interest, just a demand that contributions are upstreamed.
AWildC182··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
I came to this conclusion as well as it seems like a lot of extremely pivotal economic events took place around 1971. It was basically the year the modern economy was born.
AWildC182··on The Nintendo Switch uses my open source code
Interestingly most of the anger was before I added that.

I agree it's your choice. I will say, however, that we need to band together as a community. This of course depends on your views on the future of OSS but if you want corporations to also participate and maybe have a chance at a completely open source future, we need to collectively insist on GPL. Doing otherwise minimizes the efforts of those who want more OSS participation from corporations.

AWildC182··on The Nintendo Switch uses my open source code
Obviously if you license your code without any strings attached, you can't exactly demand payment or anything. Rather this should be a cautionary tale that MIT/BSD in the hope of other people using your code is dumb and the industry really needs to double down on GPL if we are to ever expect megacorps to be good faith players in the community.
AWildC182··on The Nintendo Switch uses my open source code
Absolutely giddy that a multi billion dollar company is profiting massively off of the generosity of an individual without contributing anything back!

Edit: And this is somehow controversial! Do tell me more!

GPL your shit people.

AWildC182··on Weekly Digs NEWSLETTER -- Is an “Eviction Tsunami” looming in 2021?
Yea I call bullshit. The actual article is on a rental blog pushing passive income and is just throwing around a bunch of misleading numbers while hand waving violently. This isn't analysis, it's just content farming.
AWildC182··on Call to arms: Sweden raises defense spending by 40% in 5 years
Stockholm is ~300mi from both St Petersburg and Kaliningrad. That's cheap cruise missile range.
AWildC182··on Call to arms: Sweden raises defense spending by 40% in 5 years
Sweden isn't a NATO member state so any trumpist arguments regarding the 2% GDP expenditure number are moot.
