AFNobody··on The U.S. Air Force learned to code and saved the Pentagon millions
To be 100% honest, if they offered $80k and military level benefits I bet you a ton of people would take that offer as long as it was guaranteed in writing they would be in the US writing code. Most developers are mediocre and paid in the $80-120k range depending on cost of living.
AFNobody··on The Rise of Edible Insect Farming
Just look at alot of paleo diets....they try to replace the carb calories with fat/protein.

The reality is most people should be eating large amounts of vegetables (not starchy ones like corn), meat once a day, some fruit, some milk products.

If people _really_ wanted to be healthy they'd be eating things like riced broccoli with a vegetarian curry with low fat content for lunch/dinner. (i.e. Vindaloo with beans)

For breakfast, have some yogurt, meat, carbs.

AFNobody··on NZ Court of Appeal Upholds Kim Dotcom Extradition Decision to the US
I was replying to someone arguing he couldn't. I didn't say he should.

Not sure why you even typed that, honestly.

AFNobody··on NZ Court of Appeal Upholds Kim Dotcom Extradition Decision to the US
It wouldn't be the first time someone illegally entered a country or smuggled something via boat.

And yes, someone like Kim Dotcom has the resources to try.

AFNobody··on Justice Anthony Kennedy to Retire from Supreme Court
Is anyone else under the impression this is just going to further cement the right-wing-nut majority on the Supreme Court for 40 years?

Kennedy was the only genuinely party neutral Jurist appointed by either party. They are going to replace him with another Gorusch ASAP to avoid the risk of losing in Nov.

That leads to 5 Party-Before-Country Justices sitting on the Supreme Court with the same ideological bent (GOP).

Yeah it kinda is but you know it exists and could "acquire" it if you wanted.

In China, you wouldn't have that option.

AFNobody··on Fewer Births Than Deaths Among Whites in Majority of U.S. States
You are blaming the GOP (whose economic policies are the primary driver of low birth rates) for electing Trump. Good job!
AFNobody··on Ask HN: How do you manage your manager?
The only people I have seen give your advice are bad managers. :)

We aren't going to agree.

AFNobody··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
True, I agree under an ideal framework including a form of insurance for parental leave could also work in place of the negative income tax.
AFNobody··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
Not if the penalties harsh enough that a decent lawyer will take an average case on spec.

You need to remember the effectiveness of a law is penalty * odds of getting caught. You just need to make discrimination unattractive financially and provide some incentive to the parents to cover the risk.

AFNobody··on Ask HN: How do you manage your manager?
You basically quoted word for word multiple times what a petty and vindictive manager I worked for about a year said repeatedly in almost all your posts.
AFNobody··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
> We agree, societally, that we shouldn't discriminate against parents. However, we don't live in a world where a business is spared the cost incurred by that.

The policy solution is:

- A per-child negative income tax sufficient to cover the risk/impact of employer discrimination.

- Give mothers and fathers equal leave.

- Limit the compulsory work week to 50 hours for salaried (or overtime hourly) employees.

- Penalties for violating the above sufficient to convince lawyers to take the case on a speculative basis if the client has a legitimate case.

That balances out the differences between genders and parents/non-parents sufficiently that anyone with sense wouldn't take the risk.

AFNobody··on FBI Recovers WhatsApp, Signal Data Stored on Michael Cohen’s BlackBerry
Blackberry is just a skin of Android these days.
AFNobody··on Ask HN: How do you manage your manager?
> From the manager's POV, OP wants an exception to some policy (written or unwritten). If you want to get away with exceptions you need more than the normal adversarial relationship.

No workplace is ever perfect but there is a difference between a manager who understands the reality of the situation and a manager who is a problem that needs to be removed.

The fact you feel ignoring unwritten policies is "special treatment" likely puts you in the latter camp.

> However your working life will be a lot easier if you learn to work around inadequacies in your chain of management

Usually, it is easier to find another job than endure poor management for extended periods of time.

AFNobody··on White House announces 25 percent tariff on Chinese tech goods
> Perhaps but in this case better for who? It doesn't seem to me that - for most Americans - allowing the Chinese to steal our technology and then underprice our businesses with cheap labor is beneficial.

- China's labor prices are increasing faster than they are in the US. So fast in fact, people are automating factories in China and/or moving factories to other countries.

- Every country _except_ the US will continue to buy those goods at the real market price.

- This is just exporting US jobs to Mexico/Canada who will assemble and import into US via NAFTA. That is the best case.

- Worst case this sets off a permanent trade war with China and the US is forced to sever ties with every potential "cut out" through which trade can flow. The US would need to knife all of its allies in the back and impose these tariffs on all nations for this to actually work.

- The correct response to China's behavior was the TPP followed by multilateral action to punish China.

AFNobody··on Ask HN: How do you manage your manager?
- The manager and you have an equal relationship if you are any good at your job as you can replace the manager if you want to.

- This whole "you must submit to your boss" attitude beyond performing the assigned tasks is absurd.

AFNobody··on Most Americans’ Wages Have Actually Declined Over the Past Year
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-12/u-s-infla...

> A separate Labor Department report on Tuesday illustrated how higher prices are pinching wallets: average hourly wages, adjusted for inflation, were unchanged in May from a year earlier, even as nominal pay accelerated to a 2.7 percent annual gain from 2.6 percent in April. For production and nonsupervisory workers, real average hourly earnings fell 0.1 percent from a year earlier.

The article I linked is an impartial example but it is not better.

The simple truth is the underlying numbers haven't really improved since the GOP took the reigns. We are in a sideways holding pattern of 0% real wage growth and 2% of the working-age population has stopped looking for work since 2000[1].

The effects of the outgoing administration's economic policy last ~1 year after they leave office since the government doesn't really turn on a dime. The trends, honestly, are the same as they were under Obama and the GOP has done nothing but claim "Well we did it! Everything is fine now" despite the fact nothing of any real substance has changed since they took control of all 3 branches of government.

AFNobody··on Performance Reviews Are a Waste of Time
> Not everyone has the skills to run their own business. Some people prefer to be part of a team and not at the top of the pyramid. They get satisfaction by contributing.

Working 60+ hour weeks for a paycheck that can get gotten elsewhere provides no one with satisfaction. Anyone who rides programmers that hard will find the programmer firing his manager.

Almost none of the people that push you to do that are worth working for. Even a startup that provides RSUS.

If you want what the OP wants in an employee, you need to pay a minimum of a 30% premium over what they can get elsewhere.

A dam built on a 1920s understanding of geology and dam construction is your argument.

And you are ignoring the fact they are trying to tunnel through something with very similar geology.

Okay.

AFNobody··on Only 31% of California voters want to keep paying for bullet train

The amount of tunneling/demolition involved is quite viable. lol.

AFNobody··on Seattle now decade’s fastest-growing big city in the U.S.
> Its literally my #1 concern about the area. If the wave rises to the point that I can never achieve housing stability without a 1.5 hour commute, I'll move (just as so many of my friends here have). Colorado and Portland are next, but even there the whispers of NIMBYism are getting louder. I'm beginning to think at this point that the economy is out to get everyone who's under 35 - the only place there are jobs that pay well enough to afford anything are vastly more expensive.

I'd suggest the Southeast if you can. $300k houses are quite viable with 30 minute commutes.

AFNobody··on Only 31% of California voters want to keep paying for bullet train
Correct, there is no freeway that passes through those impassable mountains. /s
