9front··on Intel announces Arm investment, talks up RISC-V
I was at Intel when Krzanich was shown the door. After some time Bob Swan was announce as the new CEO. A bean counter, that was a first for Intel leadership. On the internal employee bulletin board the company posted how Bob is the right choice to which someone replied "If Bob was the right choice why did it take seven months?"
9front··on The History of Windows 95
Win95 sale started at midnight on the release day. I recall going to a local Fry's Electronics store (out of business now) roaming around and at 12:01 am grabbing a box of the upgrade. I still have the box and its contents. Full version was too expensive for me back then. There was a big pile of Win95 boxes at the entrance of the store. A local TV crew was there interviewing people about the new OS. I came home and upgraded Win 3.1 and by morning I was watching in amazement the screen savers. There was one of an airplane flying around the screen.

Give 10% to less fortunate people. Avoid charities. Invest the remaining 90% in real estate.
9front··on Ask HN: How to Invest $700k USD?
If your primary residence is mortgaged you're paying interest that compounds to a lot of money diminishing your $700K sitting under the mattress. Pay off the house and save + invest the interest you'd pay each month. That will afford a lot of food and doctor's visits later.
9front··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released

Apple I was priced at $666.66. Look at what Apple became, a beast!
9front··on Socialist Romania Computer Chips
Socialist Romania did not pay to license Western chip technologies. All production was based on stolen IP. Ceausescu had a vast spy network stealing everything they could from abroad. The spy network was dismantled when Pacepa, the mastermind behind it, defected to US in 1978.

9front··on Benefits of Not Using an IDE
The Hole-Hawg drill is the IDE equivalent. Recently discussed on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28015229
9front··on Why SteamOS Switched from Debian to Arch Linux
Arch Linux is great! As a rolling release it needs "Patch Tuesday" type of updates. Falling behind just few weeks leads to a broken system. Over time too many .pacold, .pacsave and .pacnew files are polluting the filesystem, requiring manual intervention.
9front··on Unix – The Hole Hawg of Operating Systems (1999)
C language is the Hole Hawg, IMO. UNIX is just the hole(s).
9front··on Windows 96
To see some ASCII art (I think that's Ballmer!) type "cat w:/dearCommunity.txt" in the terminal. If you open the file in the file manager the output is garbled.
9front··on Windows 96
Type "bsod" in the terminal. An input box will pop-up asking for a message. After that a BSOD with your message will happen. Just like in the old times of DOS.

To see all available commands in the terminal type "help" or "bins".

9front··on Cargo cult programming (2020)
Forget about CCP (don't confuse it with Chinese Communist Party). Mr. Nicolici just wants you to download his unfinished "Dr. Programming" booklet.

While there look at the art of cheese making, like in this photo:

Lots of "arts" are fading away quick in Romania. Young generation is more interested in TikTok and other social media platforms than haystacks or cheese.

Looking at those pictures brings back happy childhood memories.

9front··on China Orders Didi’s Ride-Hailing App Removed from App Stores
"China ordered app-store operators to remove the app of ride-hailing giant Didi Global Inc. ’s China arm, saying it has serious problems involving illegal collection of personal data"

I had to check my calendar to make sure it's not April 1st. Isn't CCP illegally collecting user's data? Maybe Didi didn't share enough with CCP.
