9dev··on Serve Markdown to AI Agents with Accept Headers
Conceptually, I’m not sure I agree. There’s elegance in clients saying "I want this resource, and I’d like to get your markdown version of it. If you don’t have one, I’ll also take HTML." And if you couple that with optional "file extensions" at the end of the url to force a specific format (say, /foo for automatic negotiation, and /foo.html, /foo.json, or /foo.md for the respective media type,) you have a very easy to use API that adapts to the client; not the other way around.

I take the point that it makes caching harder, but I don’t think that should overrule ergonomics concerns.

9dev··on Tailcat – Like netcat, but over Tailscale’s data plane
Unless you have some kind of dynamic DNS with a background daemon, you'll be bothered by NAT eventually. And even then it's hardly as convenient. With Tailscale, I can sit on a rooftop bar in the Medina of Marrakech, connect my phone to the public WIFI, and access my laptop in the hotel WIFI across town. Or production infrastructure on a highly secured server somewhere on the other side of the planet. All without compromising security, and all devices involved just pick the shortest physical link to each other.

It's really pretty cool.

9dev··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
Just like C# has baggage. Or R has. Or Go, to some extent. This is a non-sequitur.
9dev··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
Show me a language that old without lots of cruft. The worst thing you can find is the standard library, which is just an unsolvable problem.
9dev··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
I can only recommend to check out a popular project, maybe Laravel, and read it’s documentation. Alternatively, look at the PHP website itself. The new syntax improvements alone are pretty convincing IMHO, but the engine also got a JIT compiler, a runtime type system that’s fully opt-in, fibers for concurrency, and much more.

It’s really worth a second look.

9dev··on Starbase, LA
No, sorry, that’s a strawman. You’re framing this as if we were talking about some nuanced policy issue, which it isn’t. The concrete situation is a president unilaterally renaming a geographical feature for no other defensible reason than hubris, in disagreement with the rest of the region.

I agree with GP - there is no debate to be had over this, only rejection.

9dev··on Starbase, LA
And for good reason. It’s an insult to the rest of the world.
9dev··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
It’s not like that cannot be changed. Look at PHP, which managed to evolve brilliantly over the last decade and gets tons of things right now.
9dev··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
I am so glad these hunks of steel and road hazards are illegal over here.

9dev··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
As they should. As a customer, I want to be able to hold a business accountable, and the minimum requirement for that is being able to identify the legal person responsible for that business.
9dev··on 'The Nerd Reich' tracks the 'unmasking of Silicon Valley's true politics'
Among others, Peter Thiel or Elon Musk talk about their disdain for democracy and desire for another form of government very openly; this isn't a secret. If you doubt this, I really recommend researching a bit for yourself.
9dev··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
Funny people should have that problem. I have spent most of my career in the startup space, and my experience has consistently been that the amount of problems to solve is vastly larger than what I can reasonably achieve in my waking hours.

So I don't find problems to solve, I try to assess which problems are most urgent, or which solution solves several of them at once. Learning to get that kind of prioritisation right to keep all teams and customers happy and productive is what I'm very proud of in my career.

9dev··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
I would argue that the USA suffers from its bipartisan system in a lot of ways; among them the problem of two parties having to span an incredibly wide range of political positions that are often so far apart to be almost irreconcilable. I'm pretty sure you will find some people with uncomfortable positions at the fringe seams of the Left Alliance as well, they are just organised in a very different system compared to the US and do not have the momentum to rally around these positions right now.
9dev··on Felony Bench
Fair point, I hadn’t considered that angle. That said, I still think you can construct many scenarios where your consent to prosecution as a victim are meaningless from a legal perspective.

For a closer example to the original consideration, assume a person that is abused by their spouse: There is a good reason why the abuse will be prosecuted regardless of that person's wishes if authorities are made aware of the abuse.

9dev··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
As a citizen of one of the European countries you mentioned, let me tell you: The DSA would run as a center-left party in pretty much the entire union. You have—respectfully—not a clue what socialism means, because the DSA agenda has absolutely nothing in common with communism in the first place.
9dev··on Zig’s Io.Threaded is neat
Oh, humans can definitely do that, in some capacity, if they're attentive, slept enough, aren't hungry, or in emotional distress, for a limited amount of time.

A generalised algorithm can do this consistently, billions of times, which happens to be the amount of problems involved in building an application.

9dev··on Zig’s Io.Threaded is neat
> if you […] often know better than the compiler

With all due respect, that tickles my spidey senses. People claiming to know better than a compiler about low-level details of their code are most often either engaging in premature hyper-optimisation, or suffer a specific kind of greybeard hubris IMHO

9dev··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
at least not by universal human rights, apparently
9dev··on Felony Bench
I was specifically referring to the fact that HuggingFace cannot chose not to litigate, because litigation doesn't depend on the victim's opinion - prosecution of felonies is imperative to the authorities (whether they actually fulfil their role is another question these days, sadly…)

But anyway, I don't think our laws currently have the right vocabulary to describe an AI agent committing a crime, because intent doesn't apply to a computer program. The closest I can think of is neglect by the computer programs human initiator, who should have taken the steps necessary to prevent the program from causing harm. But I'm pretty sure these questions will be subject to a lot of professional discussion in the coming decades anyway.

9dev··on Felony Bench
That can is rendered entirely meaningless by the conditions in that statement. In the same sense you can also declare yourself king of the USA.
9dev··on Felony Bench
That's not slavery, because you only declare yourself at my service, but you never sign a contract giving your rights away in exchange for something. That's the part you cannot do, regardless of whether it's voluntary.
9dev··on Felony Bench
Luckily, that isn't how the law works. Or is supposed to work, anyway. You cannot, for example, sell yourself as a slave to somebody else, because slavery is illegal - even if you opt into it.

So whether something is a felony isn't decided by the victim, but the rules of law, and that means breaching a security system without authorization is illegal, no matter what you think.

9dev··on Kobo can run apps now
What worth is a toaster if it can't run DOOM? What worth is life if you never even find out??
9dev··on Ox Alpha
> Hungary ,

The Hungary that JD Vance tried to influence elections in, in favour of an autocratic asshole that peddles antisemitism and FUD regarding Ukraine?

> Canada,

The Canada currently harassed by the sad joke of a POTUS with a trade war?

> half of the Africa ,

The half hit by Ebola with retracted USAID, or the other half? Like that one that includes South Africa, the only African country the USA grants asylum right now--to white farmers over racism concerns? Or the half including Sudan or the Kongo, ravaged by civil war, enabled with American weapons and strategic neglect?

> war in Ukraine ,

The war enabled by no-one but the USA's support for Russia? Remember the red carpets for Putin?

> North Korea ,

You mean the country that only exists because of the USA's Korean War? The country led by "a good friend" of the American president?

> Iran

The Iran currently under siege by the USA and Israel in an unsanctioned attack war?

> you name it .

Oh sure! We can gladly continue with Gaza, Vietnam, Cuba, Bhutan, South Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Denmark and Iceland, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, ... there are so many more places fucked up by the USA and its agencies!

> They will fund any sick sycophantic government if they let them build their plants .

You mean like in Venezuela, Gaza, or whatever the clown in chief has planned for Iran?

9dev··on Who owns the code?
I’m all for this, if we also set up a system to let society pay for artists. And I mean in full: cover for their living expenses; their rent; internet access; materials; everything.

Or how do you suppose art gets created for humanity as a whole to enjoy?

9dev··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter

9dev··on The Trumps' Crypto Project Just Got One Step Closer to Becoming a Bank
This is not an excuse for anything. A democracy doesn’t come for free, but requires active participation from everyone.
9dev··on Show HN: Laptop is the last place your secrets are still in plaintext
The pattern of piping an arbitrary script to your shell? This should be an ordinary app bundle to drop into /Applications, or be distributed as an installer.

The readme even says so itself:

> A bad curl | sh, a sketchy npm install, or one of the AI agents now running in your editor with your full permissions.

And then, two paragraphs down, it suggests to do just that to install…

9dev··on A spectre is haunting Unicode
More mundanely, you could also use it as a marker character, given that nobody except for sneaky little QA hobbitses will ever use it in their input.
