98codes··on Right to Repair laws have now been proposed in all U.S. states
I imagine bringing up the current situation with John Deere and how the law would enshrine the right to repair the tractor that you bought with your own money would go farther than most arguments with those folks.
98codes··on Software development topics I've changed my mind on
Reminds me of the equivalent you see so often about driving where people slower than you are morons, while those faster than you are crazy.
98codes··on Ask HN: Promoted, but Career Path Derailed
Reading through this, the main thing I'm seeing is the opportunity for impact. They think you're doing great, they promoted you, and now they are looking for you to lead this new (to you) underperforming team, in order to get them moving in the right direction.

Devil's in the details, but you have full control in your hands; you need to realize that you have full agency in your situation and lead from wherever you are in the org chart.

98codes··on Almost one in 10 people use the same four-digit PIN
In my GenX brain, a Van Halen album* comes to mind.

98codes··on In the Belly of the MrBeast
Same, and now I've spent the last two weeks trying to convince YouTube that I don't need several different videos of Christmas music playing over a fireplace.

Feels a whole lot like the dumb emails I get from places like Home Depot, where because I bought a table saw they feel I should know about all these other table saws they have.

98codes··on Let's Quit X
The Sky Follower Bridge browser extension[1] works really well to find everyone you were following on Twitter and find their Bluesky accounts. It finds matches, close matches, and maybes so you do need to review, but the tool doesn't autofollow, just makes it easy to follow.

98codes··on Why are corporations cutting managers?
One of the big things that keeps me where I'm working now is the org structure that keeps managers & non-managers on separate career tracks until significantly higher in the org chart than most big companies. Moving between manager & not isn't a promotion or demotion; it's a sideways shift.
98codes··on Hitting OKRs vs. Doing Your Job
The key to largeco success is to understand that when you own a certain area, especially if it's an area that will generate opinions or a visibility boost, you will need to manage your full stack, not just the code you write. Code access, PR acceptability requirements, roadmap, triaged backlog, and communication upwards, downwards, and sideways.

If you're not doing that work, either someone else is going to do it or it'll cause issues down the road. Look at it this way: you can either be grateful that so many folks are wanting to help you in your effort and coordinate that effort, or you can stick to the code and complain that someone else is trying to steal your credit.

All of this hinges entirely on your direct manager (and to an extent their manager) being an actually good manager, and not a microcontroller, pass-the-buck-er, or an empty chair.

98codes··on Windshield pitting incidents in Washington reach fever pitch on April 15, 1954 (2003)
Anyone know if eggs are officially good or bad for us this year? I lost track.
98codes··on Mistakes as a new manager
Every manager I've ever had that couldn't let go of their IC hat also had a pile of manager hat work that wasn't ever getting done.
98codes··on Advent of Code 2024
For me, it's my ability to give feedback directly to a dev team building out an imperative language for use in our products: what was easy, what's a PITA, what are big, glaring gaps making things impossible, etc.
98codes··on Shift Left Is the Tip of the Iceberg
What helped me finally remember "left of what, exactly" is to imagine a timeline, left to right. Shifting left is moving things earlier in that timeline.
98codes··on The Onion buys Infowars
> Based on what previous in-real-life examples is this a realistic worry

My interpretation is that the post you replied to was 100% satire.

98codes··on How to self-host all of Bluesky except the AppView (for now)
This is all academic for me until Bluesky gets the functionality to get an account back onto their main network, for DR if not peace of mind that an "undo" is possible.
98codes··on Multiple new macOS sandbox escape vulnerabilities
> On Windows land you have something similar

I'm still waiting to hear about a kernel-level exploit that starts with Visicalc or similar.

98codes··on Half of Young Voters Say They've Lied about Which Candidates They Support
Unless they aren't in a space where telling that truth is safe, be it from familial pressure, peer pressure, pressure from their significant other.

Same for the young men, honestly.

98codes··on Half of Young Voters Say They've Lied about Which Candidates They Support
> Which goes against accepted logic that women would be more likely to conform socially.

Citation needed. Where is that coming from?

98codes··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
> As a student, the only thing the next institution will see is GPA, school, major. Roughly in that order.

And every non-educational institution after that will see school, degree as a checkbox.

98codes··on Response to DHH
In this particular case, it's helpful to remember that two people can be wrong.
98codes··on The best $4 ever spent
I had a similar experience -- their (age 2 & 5) favorite thing? Was it the rides, meeting all the characters? No. The parking lot tram.
98codes··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
I like wearing chunky glasses -- they fit my face well.

These things look at least twice the thickness of anything I'd ever consider wearing in public, in any circumstance.

98codes··on Deals with the devil aren't what they used to be
Or so the devil would have you believe.
98codes··on Tell HN: Google OAuth consent screen issue could be costing you signups
Same, but for me it's because as I've gotten older, sometimes my finger gets unsteady enough to double tap something, mostly on touchpads rather than a mouse.
98codes··on Show HN: Launch React components in your app with no-code
I can tell that you're trying to make this work, and I very much appreciate the effort, but where is the no-code part? The YAML is definitely code. HTML & CSS are code. My rule of thumb: if you screw up the punctuation and that causes the thing to break, that was code.

Second, too much zooming. It was really hard to wrap my brain around what was going on when everything was moving around so quickly.

98codes··on Show HN: Launch React components in your app with no-code
You are severely overestimating the average person's ability and understanding.

98codes··on Why Heroism Is Bad and What We Can Do to Stop It
More likely: "You worked overtime to save systems across the planet from crashing due to a potentially botched update?"

"Yes, sir. We're 'Site Reliability Engineering', after all."

"And nothing has changed. Updates are a smooth as usual."

"Yes, sir. Site Reliability Engineering, at its finest, sir!"

"You're fired."

98codes··on Preliminary Post Incident Review
Combined with this, presented as a change they could potentially make, it's a killer:

> Implement a staggered deployment strategy for Rapid Response Content in which updates are gradually deployed to larger portions of the sensor base, starting with a canary deployment.

They weren't doing any test deployments at all before blasting the world with an update? Reckless.
