9659··on Commercial interests petition FCC for high power allocation on shortwave
20,000 watts is not a big deal. You want a strong Signal, all day between Chicago and New York? A power level with some design margin is what you need.

Provided the transmitter is 'clean' and modulated such that the signal stays inside the allocated bandwidth, it will not impact other users.

(except if you are < 1 Mile from the transmitter. the poor selectivity in your receiver may be overwhelmed by this power up close).

The question is how much bandwith and what kind is the modulation? Narrow band modes consume less spectrum, and they also transfer less data.

A 50-100 khz band could be carved out of HF and given to this services. 500khz would be way to much.

And you cannot take it from the Ham bands. They were there first.

9659··on On Becoming a VP of Engineering
US Military absolutely teaches "servant leadership".

And "Do what I say leadership" at other times.

9659··on The Development of the C Language (1993)
my point is either of these versions are very complete and usable implementations. more recent is even better.
9659··on Entitled to Profit: In Texas, Title Insurance Is a “Total Scam” (2021)
Only little guys pay insurance.

You get to a certain size, and you self-insure. Blue Cross / Aetna and the likes are involved to do the paperwork.

Every time you file a claim, it is eventually paid by your employer (plus processing fee)

Maybe you buy a stop loss policy for the entire plan to limit your risk.

9659··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
From Wikipedia: "A software engineer is a person who applies the engineering design process to design, develop, maintain, test, and evaluate computer software."

"The engineering design process, also known as the engineering method, is a common series of steps that engineers use in creating functional products and processes. The process is highly iterative - parts of the process often need to be repeated many times before another can be entered - though the part(s) that get iterated and the number of such cycles in any given project may vary.

It is a decision making process (often iterative) in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation.[1]"

It is not dependent on the problem domain, rather on how the work is performed.

9659··on We replaced Firecracker with QEMU
People run containers for two reasons: #1. They cannot control their devs with python dependencies. #2. Everyone runs containers! Can't be left behind.
9659··on The Development of the C Language (1993)
These men were/are giants in the field.

But look at how simple the language was in the beginning. A handful of concepts, strung together. Incremental changes; not all were deemed best in hindsight.

You can fit what is going on in 16K in your head.

9659··on The Development of the C Language (1993)
Ada. 83 or 95
9659··on The A-10 is retiring and the Air Force has no close air support replacement
Close Air Support is controlled and managed by the guys on the ground. The pilot has to have situational awareness, and capture the nuances of where the dangers are prior to releasing ordinance.

When you 'pop yellow smoke' and need a bomb planted there now, it is not the time to be in satellite comms asking for a drone tasking and then explaining to the operator what you need (being the drone has a soda straw sized view into the situation).

9659··on Rocky strikes back at Red Hat
At my previous employment, we used RHEL. Why? It is the only linux on the governments list of "security acceptable software products".

And lot's of CentOS. Mainly for development. If I needed a virtual machine to troubleshoot something, I would make a CentOS one. A lot easier to not worry about the license keys. Same for build machines and temp lab setup machines, CentOS was quick to set up.

Delivered machines required RHEL. The others did not.

9659··on The Military Recruiting Crisis: Even Veterans Don’t Want Their Children to Join
If you want to become a US citizen bad enough to serve in the U.S. Military, I welcome you. It is a significant investment in yourself.
9659··on Being “rockstars”: when software was a talents/creatives industry
s/Yordon/Yourdon/

I consider him a giant in software, but because he was "IT Focused" he was not as loved as others.

9659··on Ask HN: Resources for getting started with modern Fortran?
Every year the amount of Fortan in use reduces by 50%. (it gets' turned into C, or Python)

There will still be work in Fortan in 2050. It will never completely die.

9659··on Testing a 1,000 player Minecraft server with Folia
it all depends on if you want the tick time to equal the wall clock time.
9659··on Tour of our 250k line Clojure codebase (2021)
yep. and when you need to write 300K SLOC, the average takes care of the outliers.
9659··on Tour of our 250k line Clojure codebase (2021)
not knowing exactly, but with an estimate of the software size. sure. how else do you reliably estimate the projects cost and schedule. "engineering" not "programming"
9659··on Tour of our 250k line Clojure codebase (2021)
which is really a good way to do it. you design it to be so many pounds, when you get it all together you should be there (or close to it).
9659··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
We could make a big list of people that are ready to buy a subscription. Everytime RHEL has an update:

* A subscription is purchased * Download all the source rpm's. * Put them on the internet * RH terminates the license and the purchaser is put on a list * goto next person on list and repeat.

A few thousand people would keep this going.

9659··on Money is the megaphone of identity (2020)
Actually, most life insurance pays out on suicide. After 2 years of holding the policy.
9659··on Are you a late bloomer in work or love? Maybe you’re right on time
Yep. You got it. No upfront investment, all the risk. But, he had ran a similar operation before. So he had an idea of what needed to be done, and how to do it.
9659··on Agile is people, the rest is commentary
fundamental advantage of waterfall: "Done" is defined.
9659··on Agile is people, the rest is commentary
programming computers is a blue collar job. like a machinist or a welder. probably half of the work is fixing defects.
9659··on Are you a late bloomer in work or love? Maybe you’re right on time
it depends on the scale. want to start a small cafe in a strip mall? if the mall has some unleased space, and is having problem filling it, you can cut a deal. my BIL did this, and negotiated a 5 year lease for a percent of his gross sales. the burger joint took off, and the landlord is very happy...he is paying twice the going rate due to success.

the landlord took the risk, could have been $0.

second hand restaurant equipment can be bought at a discount. food suppliers offer credit, 30 - 60 days.

if you are willing to put in the work, there are ways to get started other than borrowing money from a bank.

9659··on Tektronix 2465B Oscilloscope Calibration Issues: Re-Powering the DS1225 (2013) [pdf]
These scopes were considered "instruments". Solid, precise, repeatable measuring devices. I have calibrated / adjusted / repaired probably a hundred of these. PMEL.

But, in 2023, $500 will buy you a good scope. It is really a USB interface for an ADC, but it is very usable. And will do things like decode digital protocols.

Design and repair of analog circuits is not as big as it was before the computer revolution.

All this old stuff is solid. HP generators and analyzers are top shelf.

But they are collectors items. Use the new, cheap throwaway test equipment on the new, cheap throwaway electronics.
