8bitsrule··on Oral history of John Chowning, inventor of FM synthesis [video]
Good to see & hear Chowning talk about the origins!

The DX-7's lack of patch-cord 'programming' ...replaced by 32 instantly-selectable, well-conceived preset patches in RAM ... was essential in 'democratizing' synthesis. Because it wasn't easy to make new patches, it also jump-started the patch-creation business.

The 16-note polyphony also didn't hurt.

" in 1986, it was used in 40% of the number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100." -- Wikipedia

I enjoyed this lovely rant by Timnit Gebru today. It's titled something like "AI companies are stoking fears of extinction to avoid discussing actual harms,"

8bitsrule··on How to Write with an LLM
At one point in my graduate college studies, I tutored qualified (DEI) undergrads 'for free' (for them) as part of a work-study program which paid me a bit for that work.

OTOH, an AI could not have qualified as such a student. But even if it did, before we began I would certainly bargain for considerably more than work-study tutoring paid.

8bitsrule··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
The question's not new. In the early 1900s, women could not become PhD astronomers. Yet two women (Payne with stellar composition and Leavitt with cosmic distances) made fundamental, essential contributions to the science. Credit mostly went to male astronomers. The same might be said of Franklin and DNA.

It was nearly a century before the stories of all of them were revealed to public history. That the discoverers were not all equally rewarded is unjustifiable.

8bitsrule··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
>using LLMs without disclosure is A-OK?

'Without disclosure' is about taking credit for work that isn't yours.

WP defines 'ghostwriter' as: "a person hired to write literary or journalistic works, speeches, or other texts that are credited to another person as the author."

Anyone could choose to go through life relying on a reputation manufactured from many lies. They might want to think about how hard that reputation will hit the ground, if it does.

8bitsrule··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
It's indeed very annoying.

I've only seen 1 or 2 that know what they're doing. One's at lemmy.world ... just hovering over it is verified ...

8bitsrule··on A Man Who Saw Humanity from Two Billion Years Away
A book of that stature being published cutailed in any way should be carefully avoided by all readers.

The 'Canadian Gutenburg' PD version [0] mentioned in another comment here contains all 16 chapters. ('Star Maker' is also there, as is 'Last Men in London', 'Odd John', and more.

8bitsrule··on How Gödel's Proof Works (2020)
This article is the most concise presentation of GP ... and of the conclusion it leads to ... I've seen.

"Opposite statements, G and ~G, can’t both be true in a consistent axiomatic system."

8bitsrule··on Humanising LLM Outputs Is Dumb
I've stuck with only asking questions that prompt on-topic factual output, I haven't seen much 'humanisation'.

LLMs can be pretty good about logical.technical, discursive output ... apart from the back-patting.

Maybe that prompts less chit-chat crap. I don't expect their non-human perspectives to be interesting. I also ignore embedded queries about why I'm asking, how I might use the information.

8bitsrule··on The applause that disrupted nothing – yet still led to an arrest
The publicly elected can demand respect ... but that generally backfires.

As I recall, 'A Boy and His Dog' was set in Kansas. "Lack Of Respect, Wrong Attitude, Failure To Obey Authority. The farm, immediately."

8bitsrule··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
> That people say that the fear of war (nuclear or not) is "quaint" means that the wealthy and privileged first world has forgotten about war...

Apart from perceptions, however real they were ... the hundreds of silos and missiles and thosaunds of bombs, whoever built them (names??) made a shit-ton of money (on both sides). 'Defense' spending relies on the manufacture of fears.

8bitsrule··on Long Range Wi-Fi – Pushing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to the limits (2019)
There are several legal digital formats (e.g. PSK31, FT8, RTTY) that, while not encrypted, will render 'reading the mail' hard for anyone not aware of those formats and/or the right equipment and where to get it.

Most hams can enjoy the hobby without encryption. The limits discourage uses that endanger the hobby.

8bitsrule··on Claude Fable produced a counterexample to the Jacobian Conjecture

Counterexample: 35 + 6.

8bitsrule··on What I learned selling 2,500 MIDI recorders: Hardware is not so hard
Interested. I got far emough on the site to have a couple of questions. (Maybe the answers are on the site?)

1) Does device record ALL MIDI sent to it? (Including e.g. SYSEX and non-registered parameters?

2) I edit MIDI on a Desktop (NOT a phone). a) Are sessions recorded into separate files? Named and/or dated? b) Can I inspect & load sessions from the card?

8bitsrule··on How working with a blind client revealed invisible accessibility gaps
Revealing that, after 30 years of Internet, someone's actually confronting this situation for the first time. So's the word 'gaps' ... as if the English Channel is a 'gap' for swimmers.

Equally revealing is the audio quality of most CPU screen-readers (regardless of platform). Usually, not far from the crappy first attempts of 30 years ago.

But then, hey, it's a small market, right?

8bitsrule··on Why does kinetic energy increase quadratically, not linearly, with speed? (2011)
Yep. Momentum seems to be the source of our intuition. Something going 'twice as fast' has twice the momentum. OTOH, KE, being momentum * velocity, is more abstract.

8bitsrule··on Bacteria can learn and form memories without a brain (Carnegie Mellon)
This bacterial faculty for trans-generational memory reminds me of human epigenetics.
