7ewis··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
I've been on Reddit for over 10 years now and have to agree. Generally all the larger subreddits are fairly left.

There have been some hard right subs, but most of the larger ones are banned now.

I find a lot of the mods of large subs are quite power hungry too, for example r/soccer. If someone breaks some news, linking good sources, correct post format etc. mods will regularly take the post down and repost it themselves or just leave their own posts up so they get the karma for it.

When I first joined that kind of thing bothered me, and I enjoyed getting internet points and actively tried to get karma. Now if I think something is funny or relevant I'll post it, but generally avoid big subs and stick to smaller niche ones about a certain topic, like a phone, programming language, football club, watch brand, cryptocurrency etc.

7ewis··on ‘Great Resignation’ gains steam as return-to-work plans take effect
I have to agree with this.

Most of my immediate team are in another continent, others 100 miles away.

I'm used to working 'remotely' to my team, but still from the office. The office is my social space, where the company culture is, where I go out for lunch with work friends etc.

I've worked at my company for a while, so luckily already know a good number of stakeholders around the business. I hate to think how bad it would be for new starters joining the company and only really being exposed to their direct team.

Meeting people at the coffee machine or at a lunch area may not seem important but it's what made me love my workplace.

The C level has completely changed three times in my time here, but our culture lives on in the people. If it wasn't for those connections and sense of belonging, I may no longer still be working here.

I don't want to be forced into going back to my 3hr daily commute, but I wouldn't mind easing back into the occasional office visit.

7ewis··on USB-C is about to go from 100W to 240W, enough to power beefier laptops
It's not _terrible_, but could definitely be improved.

I'm fairly content with my current situation. My phone has 'WARP' charge, which fully charges it in less than half an hour, however it can also charge (at a slower rate):

* Earphones

* Shaver

* Handheld Fan

* MacBook

I rarely connect my devices to a display, but that is supported with my cable too. The only device I use semi-regularly that isn't USB C is my Bose QC35s, but they last ~20hrs so usually last a few weeks due to my low usage.

On the other hand, my Mac charger can charge my phone (and obviously Mac) but none of the other devices...

7ewis··on Show HN: Send email via Amazon SES and Sendgrid from your Google Sheets
It looks nice, but not really sure who the target market for it is?

It's pretty easy for a dev to send emails from Google Sheets using Apps Script. If you want to send bulk, custom emails, then something like MailChimp can do this for free/cheap.

If you're looking to send thousands of emails, then you likely have a large customer base or a big marketing budget and can afford a proper tool.

I mainly use Sheets to automate internal processes, linking to Google Forms. Plus there's free tools out there, for example AutoCrat[0] that can do a similar thing, albeit without the SendGrid/SES link. But then again, if you're aware of SES you're probably technically minded.

I may be wrong though, good luck with it either way. If it doesn't gain traction, open sourcing it with a tip jar may be a nice touch and help keep it alive.

7ewis··on Show HN: Control your Bose headphones from your Mac's menubar
Oh wow, owned mine for years... never knew that.

Often been annoyed when despite nothing playing on one device, it wouldn't switch. Great tip, thanks!

7ewis··on Why are so many successful founding CEOs software engineers?
It does make sense... if you want to build a software company, already having SE skills would be very useful.

Exactly the same way a salesman would be better at starting a sales company, etc.

7ewis··on Fire declared in OVH SBG2 datacentre building
Not done any research into it, but I always thought OVH was supposed to be a very budget VPS service primarily for personal use rather than business. Although thought it was akin to having a Raspberry Pi plugged in at home.

Again, I may be completely wrong but why would you not use AWS/GCP? Even if it's complexity, Amazon have Lightsail, or if it's cost I thought DigitalOcean was one of the only reputable business-grade VPS providers.

I just can't imagine many situations where a VPS would be superior to embracing the cloud and using cloud functions, containers, instances with autoscaling/load balancers etc.

Appears to be global, people at my company in North America and Europe have said it's inaccessible.

Starting to become a regular occurrence!

7ewis··on Nikon Is ending 70 years of camera production in Japan

7ewis··on Ok Google: please publish your DKIM secret keys
Repudation - "denial of the truth or validity of something."
7ewis··on Notion Timeline View
I do love Notion, I think it's a great tool - but it almost does _too_ much.

I spent ages trying to build out a To Do list, added different views, filters, an inbox for it, categories etc. then ended up giving up and just using their out of the box kanban style board in exactly the same way I'd use Trello.

I suppose it's on me, the user, to learn how to use all these different features properly but then that's more investment than I have time for, for a To Do app.

Similarly with say Tasker for example on Android, you can literally automate anything on your phone yet I rarely use it for anything. I don't think I would outright say too many features are a bad thing... but are they?

7ewis··on Why Do Virtual Meetings Feel So Weird?
Working for a global tech company, with a line manager and team in another continent I've grown very used to having Meet calls. I've also worked here for most of my working life - so I've grown up with having virtual meetings and I'd say even when in the office 90% of my meetings would involve someone from another office, country or company. So it does actually feel very normal to me, in a way it almost feels more strange _not_ being on a call.

Wonder how the younger generations opinions on this differ to the older generation?

7ewis··on Why Do Virtual Meetings Feel So Weird?
Google Meet also has this too.
7ewis··on Why Do Virtual Meetings Feel So Weird?
I think they mean literally underneath the screen, like what phone manufacturers are trying to achieve to avoid having a black dot or notch.

Not having the camera physically at the bottom of the screen (closer to the keyboard rather than at the top) like I believe the Dell XPS 13 has (or had?).

7ewis··on GitHub Certifications (Beta)
I've done one of the AWS certs a few years ago, found it was very much a memory test.

A lot of questions on easily Google-able things. I learned a lot from the training material, but don't think the exam itself really proves that much skill on the platform.

If I took the test again now, I doubt I would pass despite a lot more experience since I passed the first time around.

7ewis··on Cloudflare One
Great work as always! Not a network pro, but know from network engineers I've worked with how complex and expensive MPLS and SD-WAN can be. Going to get them to have a look at this.
7ewis··on Cloudflare Radar
Not sure if I am reading it wrong, but I'm not sure the data is correct (at least for some non Cloudflare sites) example:

https://radar.cloudflare.com/domain/just-eat.co.uk

The leading UK food delivery company, for popularity I'm not sure if a higher or lower number means more popular - but to me it looks like the site has more traffic on a weekday than a weekend. And also most traffic comes from Australia, where this site wouldn't even work.

Is this just bots, or bad data?

Interesting, did some Googling on this and apparently they tried to protect the haiku in court as trade secret:

7ewis··on Why do so many people want us back in the office?
I usually have to commute for 3 hours a day. I have to be up early and get home late, stuck on a crowded train normally standing up for most of the journey.

I was never previously a big fan of working from home, I enjoy the social interaction at the office. Having coffee breaks with people, going out for lunch etc. But now I'm used to WFH I love the fact that I can wake up at 9AM and I'm 'at work'. I finish at 5:30PM and I'm already home. Yes I do miss the interaction with people, but I have met some people outside work, and regularly have Slack convos (or social ones while gaming for example) with those people.

I feel lucky that I've been at my company for a relatively long time, so have 'work friends' who I continue talking to. I now don't talk to the 'acquaintances' or new starters for example, which I guess is sad - but being selfish, makes it feel like I have even more time to do my own things. But on the other hand, probably isn't so good for the newer members of staff and doesn't help company morale.

I am still fairly young and have seen some people mention work/life balance. That doesn't bother me too much either as my company is flexible and I know if I do a few extra hours one evening I can do a few less hours another day etc. and wouldn't have to tell or ask anyone to do that.

Until reading this post I hadn't really thought about it too much, but guess I am just lucky that it works for me. If I was older and had kids/family, or didn't have an office to work from at home I can see how it would be more of a struggle. I do want to go back to work at some point, but I don't know how often I'd want to be there. I don't know if I can handle the long commutes week in week out now.

7ewis··on Ask HN: Google Drive/Office 365 alternatives
I believe charities can use G Suite for free, plus I know for sure there is a setting where you can tell them to store your data in the EU, US or no preference. However I don't believe there's a way to tell them to use the UK specifically.

7ewis··on The cost of 1GB of mobile data in 228 countries (Feb 2020)
I'm on Three, 600mins, unlimited SMS and data.
7ewis··on Simultaneous AP and Client Mode Wi-Fi on Raspberry Pi Zero W
Would this be good for something like connecting the Pi to a VPN for say Canada, then broadcasting an SSID for it.

Then connecting a Fire TV Stick or Chromecast to this AP, and tricking it into letting you stream Canadian Netflix or DAZN etc.

7ewis··on The cost of 1GB of mobile data in 228 countries (Feb 2020)
It depends entirely on the plan you get.

I'm from the UK and pay £5 for unlimited data, which admittedly is better than most plans here.

Honestly, I agree with you.

I believe we should have control over our own data, and it looks like Google is giving us that.

So I'm glad we can choose to enable/disable this ourselves.
