7ewis··on Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal recent technology you have seen?
Maybe not weird or surreal enough for HN. But I am amazed by the stability and quality of videos from my drone.

It's just amazing that I could easily fly a kilometer away whilst having a live feed of the footage being streamed back to my controller.

I have a sub 250g drone, so it's so light yet easily able to withstand pretty strong winds and the videos look great on a big 4K TV afterwards!

7ewis··on TIPP10 – Free Touch Typing Tutor
I think that may be the style of the older generation - remember my grandparents doing this when I first started using a computer.

Also, I never actually use it personally but a double space on a Mac keyboard automatically enters a period and a (single) space for you.

7ewis··on Amazon-Stripe partnership
Would it really benefit Amazon though? If Stripe are already putting hundreds of millions through AWS, they'd essentially be losing a large customer by buying them.
7ewis··on Buy hi-resolution satellite images of any place on earth
I zoomed in, was also disappointed. Don't know the use case for these photos, but when you compare it to the quality of say a drone photo, SkyFi is nowhere near as good.

I'm sure there must be a market for these photos, but for most people I think a drone is probably better and more cost effective.

7ewis··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
I suspect they aren't getting rid of the talent. It's more likely to be a fat trimming exercise.

The market has reacted in the way you'd expect, share price is currently up 4.3% today. It's easy to use the recession to restructure and leave room for new potential talent to come in.

7ewis··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
Was looking for comparisons with the M1 too, they do briefly do a few further down - but I'm guessing it's not worth the upgrade.
7ewis··on Employee gift ideas that make people feel bad
Last year we all got a £100 gift card that could be used at a number of retailers, plus a choice of two hampers - one containing alcohol, the other not (contained chocolate, popcorn etc. and yes some company branded items too).

Can't really complain, can see how gift cards go unappreciated though. Usually just top up my Amazon account balance and use it on everyday things or gifts for other people.

7ewis··on Meta and Google are cutting staff
I've also been contacted by them recently, definitely still reaching out.
7ewis··on BlackRock bitcoin private trust
Agree I think you're either in it for the money or the tech, but sadly it seems those two are too tightly linked.
7ewis··on OpenDroneMap
What did you use it for? Agree on the intros, I have a DJI drone but have no idea how I'd use this software. Does it install on my controller, do I fly in a special way?
7ewis··on Captive Portals
Man was always intended as being gender neutral anyway:

>The term man (from Proto-Germanic *mann- "person") and words derived from it can designate any or even all of the human race regardless of their sex or age. In traditional usage, man (without an article) itself refers to the species or to humanity (mankind) as a whole.

7ewis··on 'Cryptoqueen' Ruja Ignatova added to FBI most-wanted list over OneCoin scheme
It's also quite annoying it never finished, sounded like they were on to something then it just stopped.
7ewis··on At the Bored Ape restaurant, your ApeCoin is no good now
I agree to some extent, but there are far too many shitcoins out there and people think it's all a 'get rich quick scheme'. There's also lots of bad press about crypto scams, we have things like Terra and other stablecoins losing their peg, all these smart contract hacks etc.

Then we have all the whales and hedge funds manipulating the market, pump and dumps... it's really is the wild west out here still unfortunately. On top of all that, your parents probably think Crypto.com is the only place to buy it, and the more tech inclined may read 'not your keys, not your crypto', create a wallet and lose the keys or typo an address and lose the coins.

Plus we can't forget all the newer investors, over the past year or two. All of which are probably deep in the red right now and will sell at any opportunity when things look to start improving (and probably tell their mates to avoid it too).

I think the whole industry needs to take a step back, quietly work away for a few years, keep building things, improve security, increase trust. Drop all the DeFi farming pools with the ridiculous earn rates, stop the hype every time a new coin is launched. Get back to basics, create some real utility.

I'm not sure what the answer is on stablecoins or encouraging people to spend crypto. I think it's become too ingrained in peoples heads that crypto is an investment rather than a currency. Stablecoins were a partial answer to that, but they also kind of defeat the purpose too. We're back to trusting the US government, Tether and/or algorithmic stablecoins - which so far have proved to _not_ work. I believe it will take decades for people to stop tracking their crypto holdings and always converting it back to local currencies. Maybe we need some 'super' stable coin, that's backed by stocks, currencies (fiat and crypto) globally but not pegged to any one thing, kind of like an ETF? Is that possible algorithmically though and would governments ever legalise it and allow people to be paid in it?

I do think the tech that the crypto industry has created is great, and I do hold numerous cryptocurrencies (and am making a loss too...) but we're a long way off making prices recoveries, rebuilding trust and actually becoming useful in society.

7ewis··on We are removing the option to create new subscriptions

7ewis··on What happens to the hardware (MacBooks, Monitors, Chairs) of failed startups?
Permanent new starters get new MacBooks, contractors get the MacBooks returned by leavers. When the devices are 3+ years old they're used as spares. Beyond that they're either sold to staff, recycled or given to charity.
7ewis··on Leaked Amazon memo warns the company is running out of people to hire
From the tech side, I'd say Amazon and Facebook are by far the most frequent to reach out on LinkedIn asking if I want a job compared to other big tech companies.
7ewis··on Thank You HN
You typo'd Algolia.

https://hn.algolia.com/

I use them too, they are great for search. One thing I miss from Reddit though is the ability to sort comments. Yesterday during the Okta incident, I was trying to find new comments on that thread to get the latest news as I trust info here more than elsewhere.

7ewis··on Remove Google Account After Factory Reset (2019)
If it's a corporate device, managed by Google Workspace then you can bypass this anyway.

"Allows the specified administrator accounts to sign in to a company-owned device after it’s reset to its factory settings. Who can sign in after a factory reset depends on how the device is company-owned and its management client"

7ewis··on Ask HN: Is Public WiFi Dangerous?
I have my own self hosted VPN, but I am a fan of Windscribe too, they offer a free VPN which I'd personally trust. I do pay for it, but wouldn't have any concerns recommending it.

They actually wrote an article explaining how/why it's free: https://blog.windscribe.com/free-vpn-myths-debunked-70a0aa46...

Obviously do your own research.

7ewis··on Ask HN: Is Public WiFi Dangerous?
algo offer WireGuard too.
7ewis··on Octopuses, crabs and lobsters to be recognised as sentient beings under UK law
Plastic has memory doesn't it?

Sounds like the sentience tests need to be rewritten

7ewis··on Will Cloudflare R2 Win Customers from Amazon S3?
Not sure if it's been fixed, but works fine for me using Brave on Mac.
7ewis··on Almost free serverless on-demand Minecraft server in AWS
Have you found that any web crawlers have tried accessing your subdomain?

Wondering if services like Google or Shodan may have tried querying it and causing your server to turn on?

7ewis··on Almost free serverless on-demand Minecraft server in AWS
How can they offer that for free!?

I'm sure in GCP's Always Free tier the server they offer only has 0.5GB RAM.

7ewis··on Netflix intensifies VPN ban and targets residential IP addresses
Still means it's worth paying for a VPN then, either way!
7ewis··on Netflix intensifies VPN ban and targets residential IP addresses
Many VPN providers advertise themselves specifically as being able to get around Netflix restrictions, or if not directly they pay YouTubers or websites to mention it in an ad.

VPNs are definitely making heavy use of residential IPs now, they often have routing rules in place that use non res IPs for most traffic, but traffic to Netflix, Prime, iPlayer etc. get routed via a res IP.

Also have no idea why they're cracking down on it so hard, thought it'd help them retain customers if anything.

Not that I want to give them any ideas, but surely the best solution would be to just lock the account down to the region the billing account is from? Although I think you can sometimes get a payment through with a fake address, it'd at lest mean people can't jump between countries at will.

7ewis··on BioNTech alone could lift German economy by 0.5% this year
Probably massively oversimplifying things here, but why does the government have to provide us pensions anyway?

Can't they just reduce the tax we pay and instead state that everyone is responsible for their own pensions, so if you save up enough you don't have to work longer...

7ewis··on Mixed views on new DNS top level domains
I don't like the fact that the prices can wildly differ between different TLDs.

I think it was nice that it was easy to recognise website.com was a website too, whereas website.wtf is less easy to identify, but then now there are more available to makes it easier to get a shorter, better name and can make the pricing more competitive, hopefully driving it lower for everyone.

7ewis··on Todo apps are meant for robots
I have exactly the same problem, I've used Notes, I've used Trello and eventually settled on Notion.

I tried out some complicated templates, tried making my own but in the end I've gone back to a pretty unorganised Trello style list in Notion.

Every time I use it I feel bad that I'm not using it 'properly', in a way it almost has so many features that it becomes too much and I use none of them.

7ewis··on [dead]
Not sure this is really appropriate here? It's not really new or interesting, unless I'm missing something.

As much as we all like to download Linux ISOs...
