7952··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Wether we like it or not power generation at this scale is political. And whilst the culture war stuff is rubbish we can't escape the fact that these questions exist on dozens of different dimensions and include things like economics, politics, emotional, human factors, the environment etc. ultimately the argument needs to be won rather than settled.

Any commercial venture will just become dominated by compounding interest payments on debt. Keeping so much capital tied up for so long without revenue is just too expensive.
7952··on The darker side of being a doctor
I don't think Dr salaries are even that high a percent of healthcare spending. Although, maybe better work life balance, lower salary escalation and less debt would help everyone.
7952··on NTSB issues investigative update on B-767 runway excursion accident in Miami
And high levels of stress can lead people to break rules. People lose the cognitive faculties needed for compliance. Even things that person personally believes and agrees with.

Go arounds are not even very common (like 0.3% of landings).

But possibly closer to where a lot of people live (towns and suburbs) and able to be more flexible to where they might want to go. Such as having direct flights to a coastal holiday destination rather than needing to connect through a city centre.
7952··on US refuses payout for soldiers who died in Iran 'because it isn't a war'
The dynamic is completely different though. Russian has a culture and acceptance of sacrifice, sometimes in huge number. America is far more transactional and has increasingly treated sacrifice as unacceptable or even contemptable. There is an element of machismo in the way that the politicians talk and behave, but more in terms of executing on a transaction. But in general both sets of leadership are very protected from consequences of war (very unlikely to suffer violence to themselves or their family) so it must all be a bit abstract.

Those facilities can be much more modest and can scale up and down depending on location. Particularly for smaller short haul aircraft.

But politically and financially it is very challenging to build new capacity in a lot of places.

Generally all the weight of the fusaage has to go through the wings anyway so it is structurally more efficient to put weight on the wings in the first place.
7952··on Mayor says 'large chunks' of Wellington council Deloitte report written by AI
Yes that is a good point and AI also gives us tools to make traditional systems more quickly. It could actually deliver on some of the original benefit promised by computing.
7952··on Mayor says 'large chunks' of Wellington council Deloitte report written by AI
With many bureaucratic systems AI seems to be used to build a better horse when cars and tractors already exist. Everything was built for a paper based world and was never designed with data or automation in mind.
7952··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
Particulate pollutant levels decay exponentially and have a substantial drop off with distance. So levels across a large area (like London) are not the whole story.
7952··on Working with AI Feels More Like Leadership Than Coding
I think at some level that "following" bit requires a certain sacrifice or loss of autonomy that people don't strictly have to suffer. And good leaders tend to be able to get people to accept that willingly without needing to invoke authority. An LLM is making no sacrifice, they don't value autonomy so there is no leadership.
7952··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
It is clearly a very useful skill to have as it helps us find food we know is safe. I think in the modern world this tends to be something most kids don't have an oppurtunity to develop. When in a more natural environment it would be expressed much earlier.
7952··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
I think AI should the point where companies take some responsibility for the content produced with their tools. When the entire purpose of a machine is a form of thinking there should be some responsibility for what it thinks. It is nothing like a general purpose tool that the user just invokes.
7952··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
They have the resources to hire a vast number of people. So yes they probably could manually review every ad. And either way it is their problem to solve. They are not entitled to be hugely profitable or free from the obligations that smaller organisations have.
7952··on Park by Robot at London Gatwick Airport
Most of the long term parking is surface rather than multi storey.
7952··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
But that could just mean you are a more profitable customer. And that could be influencing how amenable the AI/agents are and how much money they are willing to write off to retain you.

I think this posture is hugely beneficial to China if they can commoditise the hardware.
7952··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
The cloud era seemed to start out being about availability of storage and slowly switched in big corporates to be about security and governance. The first seems stupid now considering how much local storage we have. The later might depend on what security issues crop up.
7952··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion

Being angry about one thing does not mean someone is ok with another.

And the context is quite different. The complaint about Trump relates more to what he is doing. Your complaint about Biden relates to something a party invitee did.

I guess a similarity is an element of virtue signalling. But if that is something you have a problem with then you must really hate Donald Trump because that seems to be his entire presidency. And the fight against homophobia is a legitimately virtuous activity. Right and wrong do exist.

Navies are known to use low frequency radio to send messages to submerged subs.
7952··on Astronauts told to return to ISS after sheltering over air leak repairs
Most stuff runs outside of the capsule including power and dangerous ammonia. They use connectors that fit to the hull and have plugs on each side. Gases/liquids can be controlled with valves. And parts can fit tightly together to make a seal. The stuff running through the hatches is designed to be quickly disconnected in an emergency.

I guess the main question about this kind of routing is if things are safer kept on the unpressurized side or not. And that the risk of a small hole on the hull is offset by reducing the risk of leaks in the pressurised area.

7952··on DuckDuckGo makes its 'no-AI' search engine easier to access as its traffic booms
I started to find that the AI bit was the most useful part of Google Search. But the actual search results were terrible and now I use Kagi. I like being able to add a question mark and control what becomes AI and what doesn't. I use normal search like a Ctrl F for the internet and don't want it to be too clever.
7952··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
That sounds like a technicality. You can absolute agree to not do something that would otherwise be lawful. You still have the same rights, but you have other restrictions on you. The two can exist concurrently.
7952··on Two EA-18 fighter jets collide at Mountain Home airshow, pilots ejected safely
I guess aviation always has an element of risk and the real debate has to be around safety standards and training. A loss of aircraft, crew or worse people on the ground is never acceptable and seems to happen more than it should.
7952··on UK government replaces Palantir software with internally-built refugee system
£100k per year means their boss gets the blame if things go wrong. £120k means you get to blame the contractor. It's an accountability sink.
