7952··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
And I guess you need uncovered skin which can be tricky in a cold winter.
7952··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
The problem is that it lead to investment on the expectation of high electricity prices in the future. Oil companies went and overspent on offshore wind concessions. When the prices dropped they were back to relying on strike prices that didn't offer enough profit and cancelled schemes. At least in the UK offshore wind has been somewhat stalled by that and by delay to grid connections.
7952··on How London cracked mobile phone coverage on the Underground
The classic system does sound pretty elegant really.
7952··on How London cracked mobile phone coverage on the Underground
A deaf person wouldn't be able to either. We need better non audible ways of signalling.
7952··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
Yes, but it needs to work both ways. Heat needs to be extracted during the winter. Otherwise the ground would just be heated up to much. That is what a ground source heat pump does.
7952··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
There is a good technology connections video about building backup batteries into the actual stove.

I think part of the problem with whole home backups is that they tend to be sized to a maximum load that is unusual or could be avoided with some effort. And that providing a backup for the essentials you actually need is relatively cheap and uncomplicated if you make some modest sacrifices.

7952··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
But respectfully isn't the crisis more in the American political system and regulation? And surely large scale solar farms/batery storage connected to a supergrid (or whatever they are called) are a relatively good fit for this kind of legacy grid.
7952··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
Weirdly in the UK it seems to be best to charge battery overnight from the grid and sell back during the day alongside any solar generated.
7952··on AI Destroys Institutions
Isn't that just an ad-hominem against the writers? A threat to the status quo is still a threat to people and could have negative consequences.
7952··on X Didn't Fix Grok's 'Undressing' Problem. It Just Makes People Pay for It
Thanks, changed that.
7952··on X Didn't Fix Grok's 'Undressing' Problem. It Just Makes People Pay for It
Why do you think it is culture specifically?
7952··on X Didn't Fix Grok's 'Undressing' Problem. It Just Makes People Pay for It
And the service was designed by Grok, hosted by Grok, you interact with it through systems controlled by Grok, at a surface level Grok makes decisions and grok makes the output. And it is quite possible the Grok knew that illegal image creation was possible. 99.9% of the work to make those images is within grok.
7952··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
Giving up is really very common in war.
7952··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
Sure, but there must always be a fear that the military and public would not want to die in a nuclear inferno to defend national sovereignty. And may tolerate a coupe instead. Which then reduces the madness and the deterrent effect. The extra step the Dprk have taken is to try and build bunkers so that the regime could survive the destruction of the country. A step further into madness that goes beyond what western countries have been willing to accept.
7952··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
There are other attack vectors beyond infrastructure though when the population all have Android Smart Phones running Play Services and communicate using WhatsApp.
7952··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
Maybe there would be some benefit in just dropping some packets. For example to WhatsApp, Telegram, Gmail servers. Could add a communication delay that could be critical and denies people a fairly reliable fallback communication method.
7952··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Assuming it was about oil was giving them far more credit than they deserve. That is a sane reason if an immoral one. I think it has far more to do with economic systems and opportunity. It is about creating freedom for capital. That means oil but also a mirage of schools, defence, healthcare, condos.
7952··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
For non-US countries the solution is to be more independent in terms of foreign policy and defence.
7952··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Why stop there? The best case scenario would include prosecution of Trump and his administration.
7952··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
War can only be justified after the fact as a result of good outcomes. The decision prior is always a roll of the dice that loads the thrower with infinite responsibility.
7952··on A train-sized tunnel is now carrying electricity under South London
Well they are put underground sometimes when there is a sound reason to do so. But mostly there is not a good reason to do so across hundreds of miles of agricultural land.
7952··on A train-sized tunnel is now carrying electricity under South London
My guess is that the droop is just due to gravity. And it is easier to affix in fewer places. But the style of photography exaggerates the effect.
7952··on Is it a bubble?
This is all a bit above my head. But the effects a compiler has on the computer are certainly not deterministic. It might do what you want or it might hit a weird driver bug or set off a false positive in some security software. And the more complex stacks get the he more this happens.
7952··on Yadea is coming to the Western market
Surely the most important area of innovation is not the end product itself but how it is manufactured at scale. That is what made Henry and what will make Chinese manufacturers win.
7952··on Apple's slow AI pace becomes a strength as market grows weary of spending
Outside of fun stuff there is potential to just make chat another UI technology that is coupled with a specific API. Surely smaller models could do that, particularly as improvements happen. If that was good enough what would be the benefit of an app developer using an extra API? Particularly if Apple can offer an experience that can be familiar across apps.
7952··on Mapping the US healthcare system’s financial flows
Or people are acting in good faith (generally) but want to avoid being accountable for something deeply serious. You end up with a web that neatly prevents anyone really being held responsible for anything. In an industry that was supposed to be vocational and treat its duty as sacred.
7952··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
Exactly! Its lucky we learned the lesson of WWII and invaded all those horrid dictators. Wait....
7952··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
I agree. Although not sure how sustained or substantive that "championing" ever really was.
7952··on 250MWh 'Sand Battery' to start construction in Finland
Surely the turbines could be fed from subsurface water that is not frozen.
7952··on Voyager 1 is about to reach one light-day from Earth
And once you have done those incredibly difficult things it is possible that the game changes entirely. A significant number of humans could live in space and have limited contact with planets.
