74ls00··on Will Spotify Ruin Podcasting?
Well my assumption was how it could be achieved without violating Terms of Service
74ls00··on Will Spotify Ruin Podcasting?
You have to weigh up the value of such data against the privacy wishes of all podcast listeners. It is not clear to me at all how knowing the gender of your audience could improve the product you’re producing.
74ls00··on Will Spotify Ruin Podcasting?
The RSS feed would need links to the audio files - I suspect that Spotify only allows access to those through its app much as YouTube does through its app/website (this is what stops YouTube video podcast feeds from becoming a thing)
74ls00··on There’s nothing wrong with my no-email policy
That’s fine, but then the MP should hire an assistant to manage their email if it detracts from their deep work. Donald Knuth does not have a sworn duty to represent people; he could go and live in the woods for all it would matter
74ls00··on Type systems and the future of programming languages
There’s not much point in providing such guarantees for most application code but there is great benefit for OS and driver code, and some benefit to most library code.

Just take security. Ensuring all applications are using the latest, secure, version of a library is a hard problem and so we should do all that we can to ensure the code is correct. How valuable this exercises is depends on the size of the audience of the library

74ls00··on Switzerland switching off its first nuclear plant on Friday
Oh, yes, it’s clearly more dangerous than all the pollution from coal…
74ls00··on Nuclear fusion startup raises $100M to design and build a demo power plant
Nah, the excess will be used for desalination; especially in parts of the world where potable water is less abundant
74ls00··on Nuclear fusion startup raises $100M to design and build a demo power plant
Then what incentive is there for investment into R&D if it doesn’t give a competitive advantage? Patents are designed to encourage investment by providing a monopoly for an exclusive time only - we can debate how long that should be - but the fundamental fact is that without patents innovation slows greatly
74ls00··on Writing JavaScript with Only Six Characters
World’s most unreadable embedded programming language?
74ls00··on The Cybertruck is not brutalist
I definitely think it could be argued that there are many examples of brutalistic public transport - a great comparison would be New York City’s aluminium cans (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d4/MT...) versus London’s tube trains with their curves and glass (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/aa/Shiny_an...)
74ls00··on Switch to OpenStreetMap
I’d certainly be interested in information about how it works - I’m sure many others would be interested in reading too
74ls00··on Fix Earth's climate crisis instead of dreaming of other planets
This is a false equivalence. Climate chance is a political and economic issue, not a technical or scientific one. If we stopped all work on space-science tomorrow, the scientists and engineers wouldn’t suddenly channel their time and energy into implementing a carbon tax, move fossil fuel subsidies to solar and wind subsidies, or retrofit every building to be more energy efficient. Climate change has known solutions, we just need to implement them.
74ls00··on Ask HN: Whats the best book on your favorite programming language or topic?
Type-Driven Development with Idris. It’s a great introduction to dependently typed programming languages and type-driven development. Some knowledge of Haskell may be beneficial but isn’t required.
74ls00··on Facebook iOS app has camera active during use
Mine works fine without contacts. Maybe try reinstalling?
74ls00··on Flood of Oil Is Coming, Complicating Efforts to Fight Global Warming
Container ships can run on hydrogen
74ls00··on Ask HN: What is the most beautiful piece of code you've ever read?
Don’t you have the cart before horse; isn’t the acronym derived from this defintion?
74ls00··on How Apple's Apps Topped Rivals in the App Store It Controls
But what if you’re not selling food, but merchandise targeted at this particular team’s fans. You can’t easily move shop to the other stadium - you have no choice but to suck up the fact that on the vendor map of the stadium, where it says merchandise, is actually Apple’s food court. Nobody is going to find your t’shirt stand.
74ls00··on Compasses to point true north for first time in 360 years in UK
Is it not roughly perpendicular to the plane of rotation because of the relationship between electromagnetism and applied force (see the right-hand-grip-rule we all learnt in highschool physics)?
74ls00··on Stop Calling It “Military-Grade Encryption”
They’re all just marketing terms and have no technical meaning. The author just wants the marketing terminology to better reflect the technical reality of all applications using the same technologies at any given time.
74ls00··on Saudi Arabia Allows Women to Travel Without a Male Guardian's Permission
Well, from which country were the 9/11 terrorists?
