6t6t6t6··on Poverty in Japan
Something annoying about Facebook in Japan is that a lot of people use it for work related relationships.

At the beginning it was a bit inconvenient for me because I use it mainly to communicate with family and friends, but I solved this problem by opening a secondary account where I add all the people that I don't want to have access to my private life.

> Train stations are in prime locations

In Japan, in general, the closer your land is to the station, the more expensive it is. So, therefore, the stations are on the most expensive land of each area. ;)

Population density is also proportional, a lot of times, to the distance to the nearest station.

A couple of years ago, I bought a year subscription to egghead for about $100.

The other day I wanted to refresh a bit my knowledge about react and, when I checked again, it was $200. Maybe the content is really good, but I finally found what I needed in Udemy for less than $30.

Having 11.000 Spanish policemen in Catalonia, including the ones in the Lonely Tones ship, costs 33M EUR a day.
6t6t6t6··on Catalan parliament declares independence from Spain
> Most people in Spain are not nationalists of any kind.

So, according to your point, the people who wants Catalans stay Spanish at any cost and tries to deny their right of a referendum are the "non nationalist". And the ones who are fed up of the BS of the Spanish government and just want to stop being Spanish are the Nationalist...

> it seems can either turn into a civil war

When only one of the sides have weapons, there can not be a civil war, only a genocide. I am convinced that there is a limit on the violations of Human Rights that Europe will be able to tolerate from a state member.

6t6t6t6··on Chaos in Catalonia as Separatist Leader Runs into a Dead End
The issue of the Catalans is quite complex and I don't think that anybody will be able to make a short summary in a forum comment. The Wikipedia entry about Catalan Independence contains a lot of information but I would say that does not explain all the reasons:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_independence

My take: Catalans are a National Minority in Spain. Catalonia has its own government, culture, language and, quite important, different political culture. Just to give you an idea, the party of Rajoy (Spanish president) that wins with majority in Spain election after election, got only 8% of the votes in the Catalan Parliament.

After the death of the Fascist Dictator General Franco, many catalans thought that Catalonia would be able to thrive as a Nation inside of Spain. This general opinion lasted for many years but, since 10 years ago, the attacks of the Government of Spain against the autonomy of Catalonia have made many people change their minds and realize that that the only way Catalonia will survive is by getting its own State.

> why tf would people want to "break" a country that works so well

Spain does not work so well. It has a massive unemployment and some of the lowest salaries in Europe. The economy is f* up and the Spanish government just spent all the money that was supposed to be used to pay our public pensions once we retire.

Also, the most important thing for me, is that most of the politicians in the Spanish main political party (PP) have direct links with the Fascist Dictatorship. Could you imagine a minister in Germany was the son of a Nazi official? Well, this is quite common in Spain.

6t6t6t6··on Spain Will Remove Catalonia Leader, Escalating Secession Crisis
And the sovereignty of the government comes from the social contract. When a big part of the citizens feel that they are not represented by the government, the social contract is broken.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_contract

The Spaniards seem to love Rajoy, as they give him the majority in every election. Rajoy's party, "Partido Popular", is voted by less than 8% of the Catalans.

So, the question is, why the Catalans need to be governed by a political party, that not only rules against them, but that does not represent Catalan society?

There are more than 2 million people that do not accept the government of Madrid. How will Madrid rule over all this people without transforming Spain to a full-blown dictatorship again?

6t6t6t6··on Spain Will Remove Catalonia Leader, Escalating Secession Crisis
Also, when my parents voted for the constitution, the other option what to go back for the dictatorship.

For them, not being beaten by the police for speaking Catalan, was a huge step forward in terms of human rights.

6t6t6t6··on No Justification for Spanish Internet Censorship During Catalonian Referendum
Wow.... You just put Independence next to treason, rape, pederasty, murder or canibalism.

That's a solid argument.

6t6t6t6··on No Justification for Spanish Internet Censorship During Catalonian Referendum
Is there any country where secession is legal?
6t6t6t6··on No Justification for Spanish Internet Censorship During Catalonian Referendum
> As for the voting? That's a bit more tricky. They are voting to commit an illegal act

Referendums are, by definition, the tool to change the law. In this case, to make legal something what was previously illegal.

Other than that, it makes sense that the Spanish law does not allow the Independency of a territory. I assume that the British law did not allow the Independence of the US neither.

6t6t6t6··on Catalonia’s Independence Vote Descends into Chaos and Clashes
Catalonia has a population of 7.5 million. In the EU, there are 13 countries that are smaller than Catalonia.

Some of them, like Denmark or Finland are doing pretty well, and have some of the most advanced democracies in the world.

In Spain, the paramilitary police injured 800 citizens who wanted to vote. Following the rule of (their) law, of course.

> On the other hand, isn't "Unionist" a peculiar word to refer to your neighbours?

Independentist is the person who would prefer Catalonia being an independent state.

Unionist is the person who wants Catalonia to stay united with Spain.

I think that both terms are quite neutral. Do you have any idea for a better terminology?

> This is debatable, specially in orthography.

I guess that you are aware that there's an annual exam that assesses the knowledge level in several subjects (PISA). The result of this test shows, year after year, that the knowledge of Spanish language of the Catalan kids is slightly over the average of the country; and quite higher than many other regions that are Spanish monolingual.

> right to educate their children in Spanish

This is the kind of nonsense Catalans need to read every day from Spanish media.

100% of the children who finish secondary education in Catalonia are perfectly fluent in Catalan and Spanish.

What those people want is to prevent their kids from learning Catalan.

The amount lies, BS and bigotry that comes from unionists is amazing.

6t6t6t6··on Spanish police raid .Cat domain name registry offices
At this point, what is happening in Catalonia is not a fight for Independence; it is a fight for Democracy and against the authoritarianism of the central government.

Catalan institutions have been raided, Catalan members of the government have been arrested, and their crime is to work towards allowing Catalans vote about their future.

6t6t6t6··on Base Rails 5.1 application with pre-configured tools and features
Is there a reason for defaulting to Rails 5.0.5 rather than 5.1.3?
6t6t6t6··on Base Rails 5.1 application with pre-configured tools and features
For what I've seen, whereas Node projects tend to the fragmentation, Rails projects usually tend to the convergence. For each problem, there tend to be one, or maybe two, widely accepted solution and developer tend to maintain existing solutions, rather than forking or starting a new one from scratch.
6t6t6t6··on 1 in 3 Americans Have $0 Saved for Retirement (2016)
300 years ago, 80% of the population had to work in agriculture just to keep the country fed and alive. Now, less than 5% work in agriculture and we produce so much food, that supermarkets have to throw more than half of what they buy.

Productivity has been growing in a exponential way since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Automation will allow many of the products we consume today to be produced almost without human intervention.

My point is that we, as a society, will be able to maintain the same standards of living (or increase them) while the workforce shrinks.

The only issue here is how the wealth produced by the automation will be distributed, but I can imagine a future where people is actually employed during less than half of their lives and still live well enough.

I don't know your field, but developers in Tokyo make (in USD) between 50k and 100k a year. This is a salary equiparable to what could be made in Europe and most parts of the US. It's even quite higher than what is paid in South Europe.

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: What language/framework do you plan to use in your next project?
I would love to use Elixir and Phoenix for my next personal projects, but I would not use it at work.

Elixir and Phoenix developers are much more expensive and scarce than Rails ones.

I would only start to use Elixir and Phoenix in my company if we were fully staffed and the rest of developers agreed on putting some extra effort (mostly during their time) to learn the new system.
