I don't think we need a citation for common knowledge about how OS kernels work
693471··on Cost of owning a BMW i3
Tesla brakes are rarely used because the majority of your braking is regenerative. They're rated to about 150k miles before needing service for the Model 3.
693471··on Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
Little known secret: Subway's Cold Cut Combo is all turkey

COLD CUT COMBO: Turkey Bologna: Mechanically separated turkey, water, contains less than 2% of: salt, corn syrup solids, potassium lactate, dextrose, sodium diacetate, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrite, flavorings. Turkey Ham: Cured turkey thigh meat, salt, contains less than 2% of: potassium lactate, brown sugar, sodium tripolyphosphate, dextrose, sodium diacetate, sodium erythorbate, smoke flavor, sodium nitrite, water. Turkey Salami: Dark turkey, mechanically separated turkey, water, salt, contains less than 2% of: potassium lactate, sugar, sodium tripolyphosphate, dextrose, spice and flavorings, sodium diacetate, sodium erythorbate, smoke flavor, sodium nitrite

So plant based milks can't be called milk, plant based proteins can't be called meats, but hot dogs can be called hot dogs and have no dog meat in them, riced cauliflower is under attack, Parmesan (cheese byproduct and sawdust) in a can is considered not misleading, a California Port wine is impossible but nobody cares, etc

Subway's Salami, Ham, and Bologna can be made with turkey instead of the cuts you'd expect because money.

It's always about money. They want consumers buying their products in stores and if you buy enough product for your restaurants you can call it anything you want.

America.

693471··on Major book publishers sue Amazon’s Audible over new speech-to-text feature
Amazon probably cannot provide you the pre-transcribed text (like subtitles i guess) but I bet they could provide an Alexa-transcribed just like Apple could provide a Siri-transcribed version. Closed captioning is permitted, so why not? :)
693471··on The $18B Electric-Car Bubble at Risk of Bursting in China
Not only are you overlooking the massive size and weight of these batteries which would make it infeasible to build a battery swapping station in a smaller footprint than the space required for charging stalls but you have not addressed what to do about the cooling of the batteries. The Model 3 has coolant lines going through the battery itself so each battery swap would also require dumping and refilling fluid.

Nonsense.

693471··on MoviePass database exposes 161M records
Thank you, this looks promising. It does require bank account access because it's basically a proxy debit card, but it's better than nothing.
693471··on Plastics: What's Recyclable, What Becomes Trash and Why
I think the packaging waste would be more than the actual food waste and ruin the compost balance if we just tried to blindly mix it all. I compost my food waste and I definitely have more packaging waste each week than food waste.
693471··on MoviePass database exposes 161M records
This helps but I am still wishing that the Final credit card would have survived because it allowed you to generate new card numbers per each vendor AND set hard limits on transactions per month, one time use, etc etc.

edit: still doesn't solve the issues with the other personal identity problems that comes with all of this... I just want an anonymous payment method. Is that so hard? I don't want any business to ever know who I am.

693471··on Locked Tesla stolen in 30 seconds in London with fob relay trick
There is 2FA, they just didn't enable it. There's a PIN to drive feature where you have to put a pin number in on the main touchscreen. It also moves to a different location each time so nobody can look at fingerprints.
693471··on Apple Accidentally Unpatches Vulnerability, Leading to New iOS 12.4 Jailbreak
Ok, popular app requires elevated privileges, gets compromised, removes any remote control Apple might have to stop/cleanup the mess, and then breaks iOS

Now what? Millions of users have to wipe and restore their phones or throw them away and buy new ones because someone's app trashed the phone? That would cripple Apple

693471··on Apple Accidentally Unpatches Vulnerability, Leading to New iOS 12.4 Jailbreak
It's off topic and people should start getting banned for it because it turns the comments into useless bikeshedding

693471··on Tracking DNS Records in Version Control
This is far far too heavyweight. All you need is nsnotifyd and a script to automatically do an AXFR and commit the zones to your source control of choice.

693471··on Making email more modern with JMAP

693471··on Making email more modern with JMAP
It's literally a virtual filesystem and a terrible one at that.
693471··on US Gen Z and the iMessage Lock-In
Apple fixes this stuff quickly enough for it to not be a huge issue, and if they ever needed to make iMessage a separate app like Android does with theirs they could do it. I'm certain they could remotely make it show up in the App Store in a moment's notice if needed. App store has root access, it can do it.
693471··on Rental firm walks away from Tesla order after quality dispute
My Model 3 is perfect and it was ordered when it should have been made in a tent
693471··on US Gen Z and the iMessage Lock-In
iMessage is far more reliable, has richer features, never needs app updates (bc they come with the OS), E2E by default, and media attachments send faster and more reliably than SMS.

I don't blame them. SMS is terrible. And most of the other apps suck or are from untrustworthy companies.

Apple's being rewarded for good behavior.

693471··on The electric car as a talisman of false hope
The electricity required to refine a gallon of gas is 6kW, so add that into the equation on what I'm not responsible for emitting.

ICE vehicles are doing double duty on emissions but nobody's paying attention.

693471··on Camera vs. Lidar
> Look at the display. Where's the cross traffic info"

Tesla's display does not render all of the data that the computer knows about.

Additionally this article is assuming the camera based solution for Tesla will be single-camera. Last I checked the actual solution is going to be stereo vision of multiple cameras (think one on each side of windshield) and using ML to combine that data. The Model 3 does not have that capability though because its three cameras are center mounted.

693471··on The electric car as a talisman of false hope
I bought my EV for three reasons:

1. Traditional car maintenance is expensive and sucks

2. I'm betting due to natural disasters in the environment and in the Oval Office we will see fuel prices continue to rise

3. While I don't think it will save the planet by itself, it can certainly save lives. Emissions are dangerous to breathe in and we are willfully ignoring it.

693471··on NEC shows ‘flying car’ hovering steadily for minute
Not interested unless they've defied physics and made it silent.
693471··on Where will ‘garage orphans’ charge electric cars?
Because the cars are literally that much better than ICE. There's no comparison in the driving and ownership experience. Plugging in is not an inconvenience. Going to a gas station actually is an inconvenience and I'm dying to dump my second vehicle for an EV
693471··on Where will ‘garage orphans’ charge electric cars?
RV plugs curbside. We could make this standard if we cared to.
693471··on Where will ‘garage orphans’ charge electric cars?
My friend toured the USA in his 2012 Model S before the SuperCharger network existed by only charging at RV parks. The truth is that gas is harder to find in some places than electricity. You just have to take a few minutes to think about the grid and where power is at and the entire debate about feasibility of EVs is flipped on its head.
