659087··on Sean Parker unloads on Facebook “exploiting” human psychology
> I was thinking more about the kind of friendly acquaintances that you see regularly.

If you see them regularly, why not just exchange phone numbers or e-mail addresses? I just don't understand why Facebook is needed to keep in contact with them.. unless you somehow feel it's necessary to always know what those distant acquaintances are eating for lunch at any given time.

659087··on As epidemic rages, ER study finds opioids no better than Advil and Tylenol
I guarantee many of you who advocate for basically getting rid of opiates completely as an option for pain management, will be singing an entirely different tune if you ever end up in real pain and realize that "tylenol and advil" isn't going to cut it.

> you'll be forgotten by all but your strong friends (who don't need Facebook's friend-menu to remember you).

How is that a bad thing?

It's not normal or healthy to try to maintain hundreds or thousands of "friendships" with people you barely know. You don't need to keep in life-long contact with some guy you spent 4 minutes talking to at a bar while on vacation 5 years ago.

659087··on Beer giant ABI bought many craft brews and is now buying beer rating websites
The craft beer market has been dead to me for a long time.

That's not to say that there aren't still a number of very good beers and breweries out there that I enjoy, but to say that the market is saturated. It's clear that many newer breweries spend more time on their label designs than they do on their beers, and trying to find the good ones has become tiring.. so I stick to what I know these days.

659087··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
It would be incredibly interesting to see who opened short positions shortly before this announcement.

I'd be willing to bet at least a few of the names at the bottom of that message are among them.

659087··on China Spreads Propaganda to U.S. On Facebook, a Platform It Bans at Home
Perhaps Zuckerberg can ask another member of the Chinese government to name his next child to smooth this over.
659087··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
Bitcoin markets are a simulation of what would happen if you replaced the small group of people controlling governments and central banks with a small group of internet trolls, who held 95%+ of all available currency between them.
659087··on How Facebook’s Oracular Algorithm Determines the Fates of Startups
> I suspect many many small business people feel that same way, and will abandon Facebook as soon as a less greedy alternative comes along.

By sticking around on Facebook waiting for this to happen, you're also contributing to it not happening.

659087··on WeWork Is Going After Kindergartners Now
Pretty soon they'll become bold enough to stop attempting to sugarcoat this stuff with all the "trying to help children grow" language.

"Good morning children, and welcome to GoogSchool. Please take out your Google Chromebooks, wait 2 seconds for facial verification, and click two ads to start today's lesson"

659087··on WeWork Is Going After Kindergartners Now
> The fast-growing co-working company joins a growing list of billionaires trying to reshape American education with their influence and investments.

It's no surprise that many of those same billionaires go out of their way to make sure their own children aren't exposed to any of their "reshaping of education".

659087··on A Pentagon-funded contest spawned many of today’s self-driving startups
Always-connected self-driving vehicles in many ways seem like something that would be a dream come true for the government and intelligence/law enforcement agencies (not to mention the advertising companies currently developing some of those vehicles).
659087··on Google, Facebook, and Amazon have fundamentally transformed the web
AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy
659087··on The meaning of AMP
If calling out attempts to use those suffering the after effects of a natural disaster as props in the defense of Google's shady attempts to lock down the web "violates HN guidelines", maybe it's your guidelines that are the problem.
659087··on SEC fines Zenefits and former CEO for misleading investors
> Sometimes things that seem really positive, like facebook helping kids stay in touch

..with Facebook's mass surveillance and manipulation apparatus.

659087··on Walmart will soon have robots roaming the aisles in 50 stores
> What will the People of Walmart make of this?

That depends entirely upon whether or not the robots can help deliver their "I thought it was just gas" bathroom babies.

659087··on Hackers breach plastic surgery clinic
Asking is way too polite here. No doctors who take it upon themselves to enter exam rooms with Google recording devices on their faces deserve that courtesy.
659087··on Hackers breach plastic surgery clinic
I'm guessing there are at least a few employees/founders of startups on this forum who sell products that encourage this behavior.

Not too long ago I saw a straight-faced suggestion on this forum that doctors should have cameras in their offices to record all patient interactions/exams/procedures for ML purposes.

I'd be out the door immediately if a doctor ever pulled something like this.

659087··on Facebook's Aggressive Moves on Startups Threaten Innovation
What we need to fix that is more of a future "not Facebook", though.
659087··on Amazon Key is a new service that lets couriers unlock your front door
Sounds like a great way to "tip" people who are neither UPS or USPS.
659087··on Amazon Key is a new service that lets couriers unlock your front door
> Those technicians were hired and trained by the FBI to seek out this information.

Do you think the government is going to pass up the opportunity to do the same with Amazon employees?

That is, assuming Amazon hasn't already approached the government to offer it as a service.

659087··on Wash Trading Bitcoin: How Bitfinex Benefits from Fraudulent Trading
I think this house of cards is going to fall even harder than the one MtGox built if/when someone gives it a push.
659087··on Google's CEO is increasingly boxed in by regulators, critics, and employees
Amazon both sells you products, and turns you into a product.
659087··on Shimano wants to make your bike as smart as your car
I'd rather have my car become as "dumb" as my bike.
659087··on Google’s Founders Wanted to Shape a City – Toronto Is Their Chance
They can name the area "Panopticon Village".
659087··on Google’s Founders Wanted to Shape a City – Toronto Is Their Chance
If someone told me 20 years ago that people would become "fans" of massive advertising companies that engage in mass surveillance at levels that would make the Stasi blush, and delude themselves into believing those ad companies "care about them and just want to help", I'd have called them crazy.

Now, watching it all actually unfold, I'm starting to wonder if I'm crazy.

659087··on Google’s Founders Wanted to Shape a City – Toronto Is Their Chance
> I believe (ot maybe would like to believe) that part of the reason Alphabet was created was to remove these conflicts of interest.

I think the more logical thing to believe is that it was created to remove the appearance of conflicts of interest for PR purposes and give them plausible deniability.

659087··on Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook will all go away within 50 years, says author
Not if we keep letting them acquire every potential competitor.
659087··on What If We Put Warnings on IoT Devices?
It also notifies that central host every time someone visits your home, and provides them with video and audio of that person. That doesn't seem like a "neat idea" at all.

"By visiting my front door, you agree to Doorbird's privacy policy"

659087··on Silicon Valley Is Not Your Friend
> The money they were getting was a pittance

Or at least, the money they told you they were getting was a pittance.

659087··on Global Demand for Bitcoin Shifts Wildly in Response to Regulation
> Novelty: there's some things that you can do with bitcoin that you can't/couldn't ever do before.

You can do the same things with a variety of other cryptocurrencies for a fraction of the cost, though.. and it will usually be a lot faster, too.
