my first thought was to have lots of hidden players running around that only you can see. The grenade thing kinda ruins it.

6510··on What does Jeff Bezos think is going to happen?
It's a fascinating bit of biology to see a species collectively sacrifice its well being for the benefit of one man almost entirely without getting something in return.

Not to argue rich people never did anything useful for humanity. The pun is that one may be promoted to great status for doing great things but after that there is no obligation to continue doing great things.

We are in an endless war against the great void and we've appointed many generals who at best couldn't care less about the war and at worse joined the dark side.

You've paid the man and now you get to see books you like fly into the great nothingness. Funny as hell! He showed non of the kindness and generosity he is known for?

You should give him more money, maybe something different happens next time.

haha

6510··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland
Sorry, I ran away from the keyboard without validating. The point I was trying to make was that Wp means you don't even get 180 W per meter.
6510··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland
Yes yes, and no. The k was obviously wrong, I cant believe I wrote that. lol

But you cant just drop the p. The p means you won't even get that.

This part seems correct tho:

> ...so it would take 50 km of panels to power one high speed train.

160 MWh/km * 50 km = 8 GWh = 8 000 000 kWh

High-Speed train after acceleration uses about 30 kWh/km

8GWh / 30kWh = 270000km

A typical high speed train in Europe drives between 300 000 and 450 000 km/year

The 50 km solar wouldn't be enough.

A passenger train using 6 kWh/km could drive 1 350 000 km using 50 km of solar.(27000 km/km)

There is about 10 000 km of high speed rail in the EU and about 200 000 km of rail in total. All combined trains travel some 4.1 billion km per year.

4 100 000 000 km / 27 000 km = 151 851 km

It fits but very slowly.

We should order the 72 888 480 panels. If they cost 50 euro each it would only cost 3.6 billion.

Took them 3 years to install 48 so 72 million would take 4.5 million years.

Maybe the Chinese can help.

6510··on The great blogging collapse: What happened to 100 successful blogs?
Blog search was good, Technorati was good, google reader was good.

But I agree, if it doesn't have a blogroll it is safe to ignore the blog. It might even be considered the single identifier that separates the blogs from the spam.

6510··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland
This is incorrect, you mean 180 kWp/m.

> in one year, the project has produced around 16,000 kWh.

160 kWh per meter.

  Urban Metro / Trams: 2 to 10 kWh/km

  Commuter Trains (EMUs): 4 to 12 kWh/km

  Regional / Intercity Trains: 6 to 20 kWh/km

  High-Speed Trains: 15 to 60 kWh/km

  Freight Locomotives: 10 to 50+ kWh/km

6510··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
right, but first have to wait for the wife to overheat enough to allow it.
6510··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
People don't know which to buy. I got a really big one that doesn't make a lot of noise. I think on dehumidify it can suck 1.5 liters per hour out of the room. I think this because with 98% humidity the 0.5 liter tank is full in <20 minutes. The tank isn't removable, it has a lid 3 cm above the floor. Just low enough that one cant leave a large enough container under it.
6510··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
If the bottom of the window is 80cm or less from the floor you need safety glass. Therefore most windows are much further from the floor than that tube can reach. We also have very few sliding windows that allow such neat finish. A lot open at the top. Many turn left or right and are half the size of a door (because there is no AC) Running a crappy tiny portable single hose AC with the window open doesn't do much. Extra fun if you have roller shutters (for shade) with windows that open outwards.
6510··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
As an oblivious Europian I was breaking my head on how the design with a single hose could be considered good enough.

Other funny stuff:

- I haven't seen a single portable AC with a hose long enough to reach the window. Some come with tents and plastic things to seal the open window. The machine blows hot air out of the tube and air from outside is inevitable sucked in. If you could only hang the tube a few feet out of the window it wouldn't be sucking in the exhaust hot air back in.

- I've seen dozens with barely readable labels on the buttons in poorly contrasting colors. Some also have bright glowing leds next to the illegible text. Even if I switch on the lights (in the middle of the night) I cant read it because the leds are to bright. The buttons are spread out in some artistic arc with a nearly invisible fine line and lack a bump in the sticker they are made from.

- People here seem to love swamp chillers, some wet sponge or fabric with a fan pointed at it. Not sure what the ratio is, I think they roughly increase humidity by 10% for each 1C in temperature reduction with some favorable sweet spot above 90% humidity.

Then I see a video from an Amish dude hanging soaked bed sheets in front of the window explaining they don't have AC, they don't even have electricity, the wet sheets cut the temperature by 10 degrees apparently.

6510··on Ask HN: Where is the programming profession going?
imho programmers should jump into completely unrelated jobs (even unskilled labor) and discover how gawd awful all of the software is. Nothing gives you the user perspective like being the user. Then dogfood your way into a highly specialized product.

There is an amazing amount of complexity in even the dumbest looking job. It takes decades to see all the strange edge cases.

The people planning the work never have the full picture, if they did the job themselves the layer of management above fails to imagine it. The people doing the manual work match the offer by inability to explain how to ride a bicycle and not understanding how to plan or budget.

6510··on Ask HN: Where is the programming profession going?
I seem to only have discussions about architecture with it.
6510··on How much? The hidden costs of restaurant dishes
You are suppose to collect tax and use it to improve and stabilize quality of life. Here it is used to punish people for trying to feed themselves, used to squeeze restaurants out of existence and used to punish social life. The vat alone is twice what the restaurant makes and it requires keeping track of everything to calculate it. You cant sell me on the idea this benefits the economy.

6510··on Why does kinetic energy increase quadratically, not linearly, with speed? (2011)
Nice bit of camera trickery. He says "both drivers react and a moment later they break", but the cars are still side by side. It (apparently) takes drivers 1.5 seconds to respond, the 5 km/h speed difference cuts the distance by 2 meter. Which apparently is a big deal. Rough estimate breaking distance:

   5 km/h = 0.13 meter
  30 km/h = 4.5 meter
  60 km/h = 14 to 18 meter
  65 km/h = 21 to 24 meter
The +5 km/h adds 6 to 7 meters or 8 to 9 if you account for response time.

You need 150% the distance at 65 vs 60.

6510··on How much? The hidden costs of restaurant dishes
I see some interviews where asparagus farmers explained that the market forces them to sell at a loss. It is apparently an uniquely complicated crop.

They talk about price per kg but I see 4 on the plate? 12 to 20 gram each. 48 to 80 grams total. 21 to 12.5 portions in a kg. £15 to £20 per 1000g

   15/21 = 0.714
   15/12.5 = 1.20
   20/21 = 0.95
   20/12.5 = 1.60
> chop off their woody ends to lacto-ferment, so we can use them elsewhere

Then you cant even say it costs 1.60 in ingredients per plate. It might even be that it costs 72 cents and that the customer gets only 60 cents worth of vegetables.

> asparagus can actually be more expensive than some proteins

It's not actually the asparagus but the preparation that costs money.

> Overall, the ingredients for this dish are around £3, but the labour, energy and everything else comes to £56

Say 60 which is 100 times 60 cents or 3-4 kg.

The hidden cost is real estate for both the restaurant and the employees. They have few seats and the usual menu has a lot of different things.

If say the city would buy the surrounding buildings (which is a good investment) and provided say 2000 to 7000 seats for free (we've already paid taxes) then reduce the menu to 3-4 meals that you pick up yourself at the counter people could eat there for next to nothing (which would be good for the economy)

It wouldn't be the same experience of course.

6510··on Wikipedia Workers to Seek Union Recognition
If this was my blog I would have written something like the below which is entirely out of character not aimed at you and quite silly:

Republican jesus said: It would have been easier if the good Samaritan would have just taken the guys money without helping him.

I have this wild theory that civilization isn't actually about me. It means one can join a union without any direct personal benefits of any kind.

When for example my health insurance helps pay someone for their care I point first at them then at my chest and announce smugly, see? I paid for that!

No one thinks it's funny but that is not important, as long as I think it's funny it's a good joke.

The trial is over, it is now abundantly obvious that if everyone acts in their own self interest everything gets increasingly fucked up for everyone.

If you are hungry the free market gives you an advert for a sandwich you cant afford but would probably kill you slowly if you could.

Imagine retired people still being union members. Crazy right? They could have better spend their time looking at pictures of their children who never visit.

Ill let myself out

I also use it like that, last time it filled whatsapp with an entire story about the greatness of the company and the wonderfulness of the product. I tried to remove everything not part of the giant link made from tracking info which is done though an UI so annoying it seems like you are not suppose to. Overall it made a memorable experience worth not repeating.

I'm writing this so that others don't have to repeat my mistake.
