5teev··on Apple Never Invented Anything
I suspect the worst software is the kind where the person buying it is not the person using it. This might also explain Apple's recent successes.
5teev··on Apple is in danger of being boring
Stopped reading at "I've been tempted, but have never been able to put form over function…."
5teev··on Textmate2 Goes Open Source
This is pretty harsh, but you're right: it was always sub-par, with some compelling features. As a long-time BBEdit (and thus Mac) user, my impression was Textmate appealed to "switchers" who may not have been aware of better options.

I tried Textmate many times, but single-character undo was always unforgivable.

5teev··on The Disappointing Surprise From Apple
As the article indicates, the data wasn't destroyed, just obscured. Maybe equivalent for some users, but somewhat overstating things, especially here.
5teev··on The Disappointing Surprise From Apple
I would expect a decent third-party solution to scan for folders like this, just as every third-party browser grabs (or at least offers to grab) Safari's data.
5teev··on The Disappointing Surprise From Apple
Would this be the Steve Jobs who ditched floppy disk drives when people still had piles of disks around, and Firewire ports when people still had plenty of devices requiring them, etc.?
5teev··on Build muscle memory with your favorite editor
No BBEdit. sigh
5teev··on Use OSX Finder Quicklook (Spacebar) to preview all plain text files
For iOS developers, this one reveals a lot of useful information about provisioning profiles:

5teev··on About the future of Thunderbird
Outlook has a captive audience. I suspect email in non-business contexts will fade from common use before a decent email client comes along. Or maybe it will be for "fmail" instead.
5teev··on Apple Releases Dedicated iOS Podcasts App
The people who have never seen a reel-to-reel tape deck are already avidly using Apple technology. They may puzzle over this aspect of the UI, but they already know how to make it work with the more familiar controls (which are also available). Meanwhile older, perhaps less technically savvy users have a real-world analog to explain what's going on in the app. So, no harm for the savvy youths, some possible benefit for the older newbies.
5teev··on WWDC 2012 Session Videos
Note: they've included sample code even for non-attendees, something that was not done for WWDC 2011.
5teev··on The New MacBook Pro: Unfixable, Unhackable, Untenable
Apple has in the past charged outrageous prices for RAM upgrades, but lately has come more in line with aftermarket prices if you factor in what you might consider an installation or "convenience" fee.
5teev··on What Makes Great Programmers Different?
Wozniak? (Although "Woz" is more usual.)
5teev··on Why airplane bathrooms have ashtrays
The real danger is the unlit cigarette.
5teev··on Hey Paydirt: Your Site Works Just Fine In IE
Even using Mac IE5 (the best browser for Macs in its time) I sometimes had to fake the user agent to use some sites. So I also felt a little twinge of schadenfreude on reading this.
5teev··on Apple rejecting applications which use Dropbox
Yeah, I hear a lot of complaining about Apple here, but not much about how Dropbox's SDK update broke apps that would otherwise be approved, and now Dropbox has a new version that fixes the problem.
5teev··on Codecademy - how not to do a redesign
For me, the site design is a small matter after the jarringly cacophonous name.
5teev··on Yahoo announces 2,000 job cuts
I expect they're also targeting a lot of senior (read: high-salary) employees who are more likely to be the family bread-winner types. (Although for legal reasons Yahoo! will go to great pains to point out that they are not in any way targeting older employees.)
5teev··on Geohot Arrested for Marijuana Possession En Route to SXSW
A relative oasis, but there's still an awful lot of Texas in Austin.
5teev··on Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs
"It's interesting how the tone of this article is almost exactly the same as the one about the Microsoft employee that recently quit Google."

An interesting difference, though, is the Goldman-Sachs employee sees a problem with focusing on short-term gains, while the Google employee sees a mistake in a long-term bet (that Google can compete successfully with Facebook in the social realm).

5teev··on [dead]
Having explored a lot of app bundles this way, I can report that many iOS apps have shaders and other similar files (e.g., plists, HTML files) stored as plain text in the bundle.

PNG files are obfuscated, but that's reversible:

http://www.axelbrz.com.ar/?mod=iphone-png-images-normalizer

This kind of spelunking can be a good way to learn from other developers about how to approach some problems. However, I agree with other commenters that it would be morally shaky to re-use any of another app's files in my own app.

5teev··on Back on Linux (after one year of Apple and OS X)
After noting my rather older MBP with 8GB RAM was outperforming my new iMac, I spent $16 for 4GB of RAM (doubling the total to 8GB); the iMac's performance improved immeasurably. By far the best bang for the buck on OSX is maxing out the RAM. (Well, at least until I can afford a solid state drive of adequate size.)
5teev··on We are sorry
Forgive people, yes. Companies? Eh, plenty of other fish in the sea.
5teev··on What Happens When You Swear At Your Users
"Men don't like to be called that either though..."

That was my point: the intended offense is partly in feminizing the man, as if being feminine is bad in itself.

5teev··on What Happens When You Swear At Your Users
Well, by some stretch it is: this is a word most women don't like to be called, and when referring to men, at least part of the offense is that it's bad to be a woman.
5teev··on What Happens When You Swear At Your Users
It's minimizing the offense a great deal to call the word "bitches" a "swear" and not misogyny.
5teev··on What Happens When You Swear At Your Users
I had the opposite reaction: this smacks of amateurishness, leaving me skeptical of the overall product.
5teev··on With 8.7% market share, Apple has 75% of cell phone profits
Basically, if profit is your goal, pursue the profitable users.
5teev··on Salary Negotiations, Don’t be Tough, be Honest
"If you're not willing to walk away, you're not negotiating -- you're just having a conversation about salary."

A thousand times yes, and worth reiterating: if you're not willing to walk away, don't even start.

At a previous position, I requested a pretty steep raise, but with the following in hand: a solid job offer from a competitor at the desired rate; and willingness to settle for a smaller raise but more time working from home.

The main thing, though, is to get something out of the negotiation, because settling for the status quo permanently weakens you in management's eyes and will hurt you in future negotiations. Better to just leave.
