5bolts··on A friend got fired from Coinbase for his side project he worked on for 5 years
it is ok, he signed paperwork when they hired him.. its a conflict of intrest.
5bolts··on Site to Gather Tech News From
way to much dead space, if i have more horizontal space available in the window don't force it to wrap text. boxes aren't really needed, kind of distracting. Pick a link size (your source and your comment /boxes links should be the same size.

forced padding could go away if you removed the border as well.

and not a fan of the font, is it ALL bold?

5bolts··on Do We Still Need OCR?
its super handy for lots of little usecases as well. look at the bottom of most of your bills.

we (lockbox departments in banks) use that to help assign your payment correctly

5bolts··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
i have an x1c sitting next to an elegoo centauri carbon. i rarely use the AMS on the bambu.

potential print size is basically the same print quality is the same as far as i can tell..

i use the elegoo more often.

5bolts··on Do you keep a .txt file with all your notes/todos?
not anymore, converted over to logseq a while back and once i got used to the tagging its just quicker.

nice daily journal too. We use onenote for work stuff - shared stuff anyway

5bolts··on Ask HN: How do I replace Pocket (ReadItLater)?
google keep or onenote works too
5bolts··on Ask HN: How do I replace Pocket (ReadItLater)?
instapaper

5bolts··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had done differently in life?
* studied more * explored tradeschool * saved more * told my parents i loved them more often * sped less (i had a heavy foot as a young adult) * drank less if at all * took a few more chances, especially in the dating realm.
5bolts··on High-school shop students attract skilled-trades job offers
but there's something to be said about doing something with your hands and going to bed physically tired...

your other option is mentally drained, potentially depressed, probably anxious - especially if/when something breaks on you

i went with the desk job, yearn for something else.. would rather have become a machinist or welder looking back. do both as hobbies now to clear the head from the desk job

5bolts··on [dead]
No wonder they are now your Ex...
5bolts··on Show HN: AstroDash – A fast synthwave racing game inspired by SkyRoads
score supposed to go down? i get terrible frame rates, but probably this work laptop sucks.
5bolts··on The psychology behind why children are hooked on Minecraft
i consider it more of a toy than a game, you can do whatever you want in there.

i still clock a few hours a week at 51. sometimes its just to occupy the brain, rip down a mountain, work on digging a perimeter..

other times its exploring modpacks and having a goal like more traditional games.

like that there are communities doing even more with it (mostly the well known groups similar to and including Hermitcraft)

5bolts··on PicoCalc from ClockworkPi
order one now, will probably take a couple years to get it anyway - you'll think of something in the mean time

still waiting on my uConsole...

5bolts··on Show HN: HackerNewsPro – Just Another Open-Source Modern UI for Hacker News
initially it looks good, but feel like it took more concentration to just make it thru the first page.
5bolts··on Keeping the thermostat between these temperatures is best for seniors' brains
The sweet spot for cognitive function appeared to be between 20-24°C (68-75°F). When temperatures deviated from this range by just 4°C (7°F) in either direction, participants were twice as likely to report difficulty maintaining attention on tasks.
5bolts··on Ask HN: What do you use as your "main" source of file storage?
* 92TB nas from qnap in raid 5 (with 2 backup drives ready just incase) - local docs, software installers, plex library, ebook library, hobby files (3d printer, cnc, laser cutter, paper crafting, ham radio configs etc)

* Google drive for some end of life stuff shared with family

* imgur for some less personal images that i want to be able to throw into chat when applicable.

5bolts··on Ask HN: How Do You Manage and Retrieve Knowledge from What You Read?
i use instapaper to save the story off, and add notes. subfolders and tags there help a ton too to remind me why i saved something off in the future.
5bolts··on Why Are Newly Promoted Employees Quitting Their Jobs?
one angle is that the wrong people get promoted too. eg someone rocks at their job in technology, they get bumped up to team lead but suck at dealing with people and it made them miserable.
5bolts··on Ask HN: Ideas/Projects for an Old Car
see if your fire dept needs/wants a donation.. they always gotta practice using their tools (jaws of life, saws) or practice putting out car fires.

outdoor gunrange?" might be a fun target for a while (then disposal is their problem)

how old is it? local hackers might want to mess with the canbus stuff.

5bolts··on Ask HN: Do banks/startups use NACHA to transfer money?
last update.. just looks like text. software? i know FIS, fiserv or jack henry can provide you some but they're pricey, and it could be parsed from a CSV via powershell for free...

i have the addenda on how the file is laid out, just no idea how to get it to anyone.

are links allowed in comments? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_r7dkjBuPzS_9a4OQR2qW4qfj52...

5bolts··on Ask HN: Do banks/startups use NACHA to transfer money?
actually now that i think about it it may be encoded in epcidec <sp>

im looking for our books now.

5bolts··on Ask HN: Do banks/startups use NACHA to transfer money?
its just a text file, might have a goofy extension, but notepad reads it fine. if you're a member you should have several books, all of which are about 2 inches thick. or you could request one from the organization.

one of the pain points with ACH is its opt in, so you have to maintain records of when someone agreed and keep up with it, along with letting people opt out.

but they're going to use wires to actually transfer the money between financial institutions. if it was check based there will/would be a x937 cash letter trasnferred as well for all the individual accounts that are/were impacted.

I can't find my examples pretty sure its similar to an xml file.

ACH would be more for bill pays from customer to bank, or customer to 3rd party.

5bolts··on Parents Paying Down Student Debt Worry How They’ll Send Kids to College
no one said that was the ONLY way. Just like college isn't for everyone, nor should everyone expect to go.

But i do think it would be a better country with forced service between highschool and potential higher education.

5bolts··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
dang thats nice. good job
5bolts··on Ask HN: What do you think about wireless charging?
i liked it for convivence but moved to a different phone and the case doesn't allow for wireless charging (has some magnets on the case to mount it to metal) so went back to wired.
5bolts··on Ask HN: Why has eInk technology stalled compared to other display tech?
other than demand? why invest tons of $$ into something when it would take forever to recoup your investment?
5bolts··on Ask HN: Is there a real reason to pay for things like Slack or Jira?
none of what your suggesting is technically challenging to setup for a small org, scale it up to 10's of thousands for some companies, or more..

Plus its almost NEVER up to the tech people to deploy whatever they want, someone at the C level got a sales pitch for a given product, liked it (may have even gotten commission or a kickback) and told you to install, setup, support given product(s). or in my situation Infosec told the network guys to implement X and it breaks everything at the user level...

and your end users will hate you if you reinvent the wheel for every internal product/process... things like Jira put a ton of that kind of thing into one interface, under one user - preferably with single sign on.

your v1.0 of a given product will never be as easy to use, or well thought out as v10 of another vendor's product doing the same thing.

And those companies take care of regulations, scalability, and can even help with audit findings - not to mention gives you someone to blame when things hit the fan.

5bolts··on Ask HN: Raspberry Pi 3B Equivalent?
look up old thin clients. (lots of youtube content about this too) for example:Dell DX0D Wyse 5010 Thin Client w/ Stand & Charger 16GB SSD 4GB 1.40 GHz [wifi]

i got 2 of those for 80 dollars. work fine in linux. even videos about converting them to be USB powered too, if thats a thing you think you'll need.

5bolts··on KVM Switches
I don't think i've seen one that can handle bluetooth devices, unless maybe you plugged a bluetooth dongle into the switch?

i'd go more with multi device keyboards and mice. like the logitech mx keys for example. have mine paired to 3 devices currently - easily toggle between them with a switch on the keyboard. Granted its not as seamless but sometimes i just want to quickly respond to an email on my personal rig while still watching work queues.

they also have mice/trackballs with the same tech - although the mxmaster mouse has the switch on the bottom so not as convienent.. and the mx ergo trackball only toggles between 2 devices.

other options if screen realestate isn't as important are things like the genki shadow play. While targeted at gamers - it works great as an HDMI input device. I use mine to work on raspberry pi projects on my main system. Its view only - won't pass control through it, but sometimes thats all you really want.

and on the other end of the spectrum, full display port KVM's like these from Level 1 techs:

display port 1.4: 2 computers, 4 screen switching
