5ESS··on Node-ipc NPM package deletes files to protest Ukraine war
Interestingly enough GitHub didn’t forcefully take over the repository and disable the user’s account like they did with colors.js.
5ESS··on Ask HN: Hacker Friendly Terminal (Linux/macOS)
Tabby
5ESS··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
It’s a shame debian flushed their reputation down the drain recently.
5ESS··on Anonymous has hacked Russian CCTV and published the feeds online
You mean stories about American government hacked that don’t link directly to the files.

Infact I remember last year when the XP Source leaked I was the first to post it here and it was almost immediately taken down. So actually, you’re wrong. HN does take down hacked data from American companies all the time and I know this from first hand experience.

5ESS··on Anonymous has hacked Russian CCTV and published the feeds online
The very fact that they even included a “Houses” and “Schools” section in the first place shows that the site operators have maligned ethics. School is obviously out of session now at the time of this post but the site was in fact exposing underage children earlier in the day.
5ESS··on Anonymous has hacked Russian CCTV and published the feeds online
Hosting this link probably makes HN liable to COPA lawsuit being as though this site deliberately provides a category for cameras of “schools” showing underage children without consent.

This is wrong and needs to be taken down.

5ESS··on Anonymous has hacked Russian CCTV and published the feeds online
I wonder if hacker news would allow this post if it was American cameras being hacked?
5ESS··on Node-ipc developers add malware which wipes Russian IP's
Microsoft should hijack his repo and disable his GitHub account just like they did with colors.js.
5ESS··on Russia's censorship is forcing citizens to dark web and VPNs for news and social
Just saying the west can’t act like it has any sort of moral high ground when it engages in rampant censorship as well.
5ESS··on Russia's censorship is forcing citizens to dark web and VPNs for news and social
Western censorship as well, to be fair.
5ESS··on I found a security issue on a competitor, got fired and served a summons
As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.
5ESS··on Light mode, Dark mode, and Gen-Z mode?
Nothing else competes for power:performance ratio. Furthermore only M1s can score 300+ on browserbench. I bet the M1 Ultra will score in the 350-400 range, while Windows PCs can barely peak 220. This is because M1s have AI cores designed specially optimized for web browsing instructions. Browsing the internet simply feels 30% smoother on my M1 than it does on any x86 PC (I use chrome-dev --args --enable-features=CanvasOopRasterization --use-cmd-decoder=passthrough on both OS's) So if you do browser heavy workloads and web app programming like I do nothing else competes.
5ESS··on Ask HN: Sick with Covid in Spain, Google Fi suddenly cuts off my phone service
I don’t* know why and you should have had that unforseen events factored into your international travel budget. How expensive can it possibly be to get a SIM card for 2 weeks in a foreign country? I’m not sure why you think the operator would give you free credit or be responsible for reminding you something so obvious. It’s obvious for me that I probably won’t have international roaming when I travel to foreign countries and will probably have to buy a local SIM.
5ESS··on Light mode, Dark mode, and Gen-Z mode?
Have fun missing out on M1. Mac OS Monterey looks fine to me especially on dark mode. What ui element you use often is neon pastel colored exactly besides the window controls and the loading cursor? (Which we’re almost always colorful)
5ESS··on Light mode, Dark mode, and Gen-Z mode?
The spacing is messed up here and some of the sizing is questionable but there’s only 2 instances of rounded corners I see so I think your exaggerating a bit.

That being said it doesn’t invoke the feeling of a safe dating app to me.

5ESS··on Ask HN: Sick with Covid in Spain, Google Fi suddenly cuts off my phone service
I know why you think you’re special or entitled to an exception in the enforcement of the policy.
5ESS··on Ask HN: Don't you think, revoking SSL cert for some Russian banks was too much?
They can be sued civilly. and also be charged criminally for “denying of honest services”. The FBI has charged people with Honest Service Fraud who broke their contracts with Amazon recently in a high profile case and seized all their assets via civil forfeiture.

Cancelling someone’s domain or certificate earlier than the agreed upon expiry date sounds to me like a Dis-Honest Service.

5ESS··on Ask HN: Don't you think, revoking SSL cert for some Russian banks was too much?
Domains are expected to be set up to stay online without intervention for years(1-10 years + even) it’s not right to yank domains away in a couple weeks time span just to virtue signal your support for the anti-Russia agenda. Some of these domains are probably used for internal services for hospitals, medical equipment, domestic transit, electricity grid, telecommunications and more so when you fuck with domains it causes all sorts of problems for real people who had nothing to do with the invasion of Ukraine (which arguably Ukraine started, contrary to the msm message, Ukraine allegedly bombed schools and homes for 8 years in DPR) interview with civilians on Patrick Lancasters channel seem to support the claim that Ukraine was the aggressor.
5ESS··on Ask HN: Don't you think, revoking SSL cert for some Russian banks was too much?
I’m against web censorship wholesale. Registrars and hosts and certificate authorities shouldn’t have revoked any existing contracts. But they would be within their rights to disallow renewal. And I hope to see people like “NameCheap CEO” who cancelled .RU domains on short notice without giving users enough time to transfer their domains-pulling the rug out from under them..sued for criminal contract breach.
5ESS··on Ask HN: Domain Name Registrars in EU?
The best registrar would be a registrar with no customer support or human intervention. Customer support agents are always the weakest link for domains when they get tricked into granting unauthorized access.

I would be wary of using any German registrar because of extremely weak privacy laws in the country (impressums etc)

5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
According to your logic the whole entire nation of Ukraine is evil because some Ukrainians decided to shell schools and homes. https://youtu.be/PGl5USbBLIo

Calling a whole nation evil is bigoted and ignorant as it gets. The Ukrainians deserve to be invaded but even if they didn’t, there are countless brave Russians risking their lives speaking against an evil murderous government, and you call these people evil? Shame on you.

5ESS··on Ukraine Pushes to Unplug Russia from the Internet
Instead of sanctioning and making life even more miserable for average Russians we should be giving them free VPN and proxy services so they can access a secure private uncensored internet.
5ESS··on Ukraine Pushes to Unplug Russia from the Internet
Summary: According to an email reviewed by Rolling Stone, Ukraine’s request to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) seeks to revoke domains issued in Russia and shut down primary Domain Name System (DNS) servers in the country — a move that would effectively bar access to Russian internet sites, with the potential of knocking the entire country offline.
5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
Why are there videos of civilians living in the disputed territory claiming that Ukrainian military forces shelled their schools and homes? https://youtu.be/PGl5USbBLIo
5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
> Yes if they do anything illegal and it's traced to your account.

Since when are VPN operators held accountable for their user’s actions? There are plenty of free VPNs out there. We don’t hold Cloudflare responsible when someone makes a death threat using it’s free Warp VPN. Because that makes no sense. If someone committed a crime using my VPN the Netflow /backbone transit logs would prove I didn’t do it and the case against me would be thrown out.

> How about Ukrainians?

They are already getting plenty of support and don’t need VPNs because their internet isn’t censored.

5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
I think the answer isn’t so clear cut and dry. The truth is, it’s disputed.

Here are some questions we should ask: “ Ukraine regards both the DPR and the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) as terrorist organisations.” - Now why would the people side with a government that deems them a terrorist organization? That’s a little strange..

- Why is the official currency used in DPR and LPR the Russian ruble? Again, strange for a people that wish to be independent from Russia.

Why is the official timezone used in DPR and LPR UTC+3 (Moscow time) Again, strange for a people that wish to be independent from Russia.

>“ This article is more than 7 years old “ Lol…

Seems like you’re grasping at straws if you have to resort to digging up 7 year articles to prove your point.

If there are really “tons” of stories explaining the Russian perspective on this matter why don’t you show me ONE recent story that takes the latest developments into account?

5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
Irrelevant and not even remotely close to what I asked for. This is a story about Tucker Carlson sympathizing with Putin.

It is not a story explaining the reason why Russia felt it was necessary to conduct special military action in the Ukraine. It does not explain why Russia believes they are helping to liberate the DPR and LPR from nationalists and return the borders of the republics.

5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
RT isn’t a western media organization.

I would be shocked if you could find just one actual major mainstream western media organization that tells the other side of the story.

5ESS··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
You could always marry a foreign National to gain citizenship in that country. The going rate for a US sham marriage is about $60k.
