This is a great idea. Specifically, I want this enabled when I'm wasting time but not when I'm working. So I'd like it to be enabled only on X.com. This whitelist+blocklist functionality could be a user-side setting like with Adblockers.
Thank you, I will try it, although I'd prefer to translate entire sentences into Thai randomly. Perhaps you can add this advanced mode. Actually, I saw your app before while looking for an alternative to Toucan that supported Thai, but at that point in time you hadn't added support yet. Thanks for doing so.
I think the curriculum areas you're referring to are for learners in the beginning and intermediate stages. In which case, fair enough, although I still think you could get pretty far by just prompting an LLM, as the LLM has read hundreds of books teaching how to learn each language. But that's not really my point; my point is that once you're an advanced learner (they claim this is their target market) who knows about 12,000 words, I think you know almost all of the grammar, and the remaining bits will get picked up along the way effortlessly via immersion. What you need help with in this stage is slogging through the next 10,000 vocab words you need to learn to get to extreme fluency or the next 25,000 you need to learn to become plausibly native-level, as well as the speaking and reading practice to make your reading faster (if it's a different character set to your native language) and make your speaking effortless.
You should still gamify it. Gamification is orthogonal to whether the tool actually works and positively correlated with whether the user actually uses it.
I disagree because of how AI is progressing and because there's tons of neglected language markets they can pick up. Obviously your approach can work too, perhaps better. But 95% of language learning tools don't support Thai (my target language) for example so I am an eager user for that reason alone. I think they'll be able to make a generalized curriculum and have the AI use it in all languages.
Unfortunately, I think you will soon learn that the market for advanced language learners is 1/500th the size of the market for beginner learners. But thank you very much and please keep focusing on us.
I'm an advanced learner but I stopped after a few moments because it's boring. It's asking me questions that you'd ask a beginner (although a beginner wouldn't understand the questions). It just asked what food I like to eat, where I like to travel, whether I like the weather, etc. I have a language tutor IRL and I have found that we run out of things to talk about too. So we often find ourselves just discussing the latest events from the news. I think you should feed fresh conversation topics daily from a data source like the news, localized to the user. There are global news APIs you can subscribe to.
I'm glad someone is building this! I was using this in Thai. I expected it to be awful. But it's actually very good. I only used it for a few minutes but will try to use it more later. It's possibly good enough for me to stop paying my tutor. However, please use a different Text to Speech model because the current Thai one sounds robotic, like the old (current?) Google Translate. This seems like a great product.
Well the weird thing is honestly their speech to text recognizes 97% of words correctly. The subtitle content is pretty perfect. It’s just the formatting that’s awful.
This seems like a good place for me to complain about the fact that the automatically generated subtitle files Youtube creates are horribly malformed. Every sentence is repeated twice. In many subtitle files, the subtitle timestamp ranges overlap one another while also repeating every sentence twice in two different ranges. It's absolutely bizarre and has been like this for years or possibly forever. Here's an example - I apologize that it's not in English. I don't know if this issue affects English. https://pastebin.com/raw/LTBps80F
It's a real edge case, but someone could conceivably let their own domain expire and then register it anew and restore their website. It will be impossible to tell this apart from an SEO buying and restoring a website to use for link juice.
My simple solution to this problem: we need a law that forces companies to provide a messaging-only version of messaging apps, without algorithmic social feeds.
I dated a girl who did this as a science project in high school a decade ago. This has been around for decades. Does anyone know why it is not actually used?
Yeah there’s a few different levels. 1) not knowing the words 2) knowing all the words but not what they mean together 3) not being able to keep up with the speed at which the sentence is spoken…
RIP to everyone who died. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but when you're standing on the mast, how can you not tell that you're about to collide with the bridge?
I get IG story ads for cocaine, with pictures of cocaine. They go to telegram accounts run by Russians and I know people who have bought from them and they actually deliver cocaine. I also get ads for illegal poker rooms.
Interestingly, just fyi, they do a reasonable-person test when trying these cases. That means they literally pull 100 people off the street and ask each one to go through the funnel and then give them a quiz with questions like "How much am I going to be billed?"
So if people are confused, it's basically on you, regardless of whether you think you were being clear about the terms.
Adobe runs what must be one of the largest deceptive rebills. The vast majority of users signing up for a monthly plan do not realize that it is actually an "annual plan, billed monthly" and thus that if they cancel after one month (for example) they'll be billed for the remaining 11 immediately. I honestly don't know how they haven't faced FTC action for this, as it's been their primary model for 5-10 years now.
Factories are not coming back to the USA in large number, for a lot of reasons, at least not until full automation + tariffs makes them economical. But the biggest reason is that what's going to happen is that the average joe is going to suffer a bit, then will vote against these policies in the next election, and that's only 3.5 years away. If it takes a year to build a factory -- and frankly these tariffs could be adjusted again or removed in a few months -- and then they're likely to be fully removed in 3.5 years, I'm just not sure it makes sense to invest in a factory.
