99 years of tax subsidies, he surely had a good life without many regrets. It's beyond my comprehension why humans still keep these hereditary regimes, constitutional or absolutist, alive

533474··on Initial M1 support merged into Linux SoC tree
Why do we still buy macs? Apple can pull the plug anytime. Kudos yo the huge undertaking but I personally think we wouldn't need this type of gargatuan effort if we just refused to buy macs without linux support. Why support such a closed system?, enlighten me...

Do you mean healthy profit margins?...because I'd rather prefer a combination of big profits, state subsidies and healthy competition than a monopolised/oligopolised market

Wozniak was not a software engineer either; he was an EE
533474··on Running unmodified Linux programs on Fuchsia
He did not say that phones were upgradable; he mentioned 'computing devices'. Calling another comment dumb does not help your argument.

Nice reminder of how unbalanced and corrupt our system really is.

I am not saying that our system doesn't work. It just feels that there is so much left to do.

533474··on UK formally leaves European Union after 48 years
Personal opinion.

Tribalism prevails, humans have no fix. Perhaps in another reality or dimension it is conceivable for people to come together and form a truly resourceful world government.

Wait till you see how the lack of world coordination keeps this virus thriving in half of the planet. While we plot beautiful statistics to show which tribe has less cases in a non-uniform response.

Hail the great UK for awakening the UKIP with their fantastic referendum promise to reduce pest immigrants to hundreds. The UK had it long coming, the country lives in the 19th century, never moved towards becoming a modern republic. And now, people are shocked we voted out of the EU. Bad news is old news.

It is the UK's tradition to be a lone fighter in favour of customary nationalistic tribalism and island mentality. Worse of it is that it ended up waking up the dormant retarded far right around the world. Hell yea! great way to start 2021 UK!.

533474··on Tillis Releases Text of Bipartisan Legislation to Fight Illegal Streaming
Simple -- people who cannot afford films will stop watching or streaming sports.

Companies will lose free marketing and word of mouth.

Companies will have to work harder to persuade the populace to acquire commercial flicks/sports. Youtube and cheap magnate streaming services win. Small studios or independent film makers, lose their free marketing distribution channels (personal opinion)

533474··on Back to the '70s with Serverless
Great article, it resonates with everything that has gone wrong in the industry.
533474··on Philosophy of the GNU Project (2018)
No citations, the linux kernel succeeded because of GPLv2.

A rather better term would be FLOSS [1]

533474··on We Love GPLv3, but Are Switching License to Apache 2.0
Corporate fangs win at the end. It is social pressure for monopoly autocracy and corporate practices. You should have had the freedom to choose whatever license you had in mind without being harassed by company employees or people who misunderstand how to use a GPL licensed product. Dual licensing would be better than giving up the reasons why you chose GPLv3.

Corporations can use GPLv3 in their codebases, they r just not bothered following the lawyer approvals so that code is shared back. If you cared about that, perhaps a better option is dual licensing.

I hope that the project does not become...yet another free labour camp by developers for big tech money bags.

We just stop consuming stupid DRM shows and music. There r tons of other media available and music from unknown talented composers/artists.
533474··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
Sorry to be blunt but you are comparing oranges to apples.

A poor country PhD student/grad in the US/EU still has to live under minimum wage conditions. The fact that the stipend might be considerable more money in their home country, does not necessarily mean that in PPP terms - phd grads are better off than say, a 'developed country' individual.

If you moved to a developed country with higher living standard costs with higher salary than your home country. Even though, you earned considerably more than your home country; the money might be nothing more than minimum wage in your new place of residence.

Comparing developed country humans to developing country humans's expectations just adds more fuel to the assumption that people from poor countries are happy to work for less. It applies the same for developed country humans moving from place to place and even states here in the US.

No pun intended but the solution there is to buy an alternative tablet or device.
533474··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
I called the programme organizer. The catch is that you need a job in the US that is willing to let you work remotely. There might be tax issues if u r willing to relocate ur permanent residence.

I'd try if I were you. Now that you are in leadership positions, please, also do something about ageism in our industry :)
533474··on Octotree – Proprietary Firefox extension contains AGPL-licensed code
It is not so simple I'm afraid; he allowed outside contribution from people who thought they were contributing to free software. He deserves the backlash. If he wanted to make money, he could have created a sub-project using octotree binaries and extended modules under new licensing terms.
533474··on Octotree – Proprietary Firefox extension contains AGPL-licensed code
AGPL and GPL3 do allow for a proprietary alternative that has clearly separated modules that use only the GPL3/AGPL code as binaries. They could have done something similar to the qt licensing scheme.

I think the developers who change the licenses of this repo have bad faith and yes, I agree, they deeply misunderstood the licenses or they planned all along to ride the 'free software' banner for adoption to then make money out of it. They could have done it in a more elegant way.
