I believe this was the case, as there was a lot of 666 going around at the time.

Demoscene music tracker interfaces come to mind.

5-0··on Models Are Getting Dumber on Purpose
Yes, humans in general. Scientists, perhaps less so.

Is it unreasonable to hold LLMs to a higher standard?

5-0··on User Interfaces of the Demo Scene
Being an impatient teenager, I did brute-force the note-key layout, but I didn't have to - each context/screen had it's own help page. You could view all screens (and their respective shortcut) by pressing ESC.

I'd rather label it "experimenting" than "brute-forcing", testing what would happen if I were to put this or that value to this or that effect. Perhaps others would do it differently but I'd go by ear almost all of the time and adjust bit by bit.

Since you could save samples from downloaded modules, you could quickly build a starter library - although "ripping" samples was considered "lame". In lack of (expensive) synthesizers, some musicians would buy Sample CDs.

In my experience (90s Sweden), of those fortunate enough to have a home computer (usually a 486 66 MHz w 8 MB), few also had MIDI. I knew of one person who ran Cubase on Windows 3.11 with hardware samplers etc, which I found immensely exotic!

Loading a module and playing it in a tracker is how I learned to make music. You see what notes and samples are triggered when and whatever effect commands are used to make it sound the way it does.

Besides, once you've memorized screens and hotkeys (which happens pretty fast, because there aren't that many) you don't need it to be intuitive.

A couple of years ago I downloaded SchismTracker. The muscle memory from Scream/Impulse Tracker from 20-25 years prior, coming back in an instant was one of the most wonderful computer interactions of my life. <3

Where I live, overtaking at a crosswalk is illegal because of that risk.
5-0··on We've made the world too complicated
Yes. It's a bit like we're very capable cells that are coming together to build ourselves a body. Why settle for an amoeba? (Other than as a stop along the way.)
5-0··on Show HN: DAC – open-source dashboard as code tool for agents and humans
DaC might be more distinguishable from DAC, although the context obviously also helps readers telling them apart.

Yours sincerely, came here for another DAC

Why now?

At least some of the links in it don't mention plugins (which luckily some comments here do). Beside tmux-continuum and tmux-sensible, I'd recommend jaclu/tmux-menus.

Thanks for explaining! It's indeed crazy that "this is still a thing".

(I regret I did not put in the research prior to answering to your comment: https://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/info/leap-second.htm#... )

5-0··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of June 2026
WDYM? Leap seconds are a 61st second, hitting 60 before 00 next minute. https://nrc.canada.ca/en/certifications-evaluations-standard...

This makes sense for timestamps in traditional logs. You don't have to second guess the order of things, especially across multiple systems or services.

5-0··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
The end-user costs are slim to none, but for OpenAI alone they're hundreds of billions USD.

LLMs certainly have their use and are here to stay but it remains to be seen how they can be commercially successful without constant injections of venture capital.

These days even the French (!) speak English.

I liked it too, especially the presentation, although I'm not sure what I think about "leftovers" falling down.

5-0··on Our new SAM audio model transforms audio editing
There are several. I've only tried one of them (free, can't remember which) but went back to UVR5.

While it's convenient not having to split stems into separate files beforehand, by using a VST, you usually end up doing so anyway while editing and arranging.

5-0··on Our new SAM audio model transforms audio editing
I suppose that depends on the use case.

For mash-ups specifically, using yt-dlp to download music and split into stems with Demucs, using the UVR frontend, before importing into a DAW is effortless. The catch is that you can't expect to get OK-ish separation on anything other than vocals and "other", which really isn't a problem for mash-ups.

It's nice to read the different takes on this.

On that note, I didn't see any mention of https://github.com/romkatv/zsh4humans/blob/master/tips.md#ex... , so there.
