4ggr0··on Reasons to Dislike AI Coding
what the person you replied to wrote still applies:

> It can be used to produce art, but it's not art itself.

one can argue that the actual art in the Demoscene is the things the code makes visible/audible, not the code itself.

it's like saying an empty piece of paper and a pen are art instead of the drawing which was made by using those things as tools.

there is an angle of a modern art installation featuring just a pen and an empty piece of paper, but that feels like an exception confirming the rule.

i did in fact test different Qwen's! :) qwen3.5:9b and qwen2.5-coder:14b, i think. but i struggled with speed and them being stuck in "Hmm, wait, no, that doesn't work, let me analyze again"-loops. on the M4 Air I was able to start some bigger models. definitely the first time i burned through 25% of battery in half an hour while getting first-degree burns on my lap.

maybe in 1-2 years my hardware will be enough for fast local-AI. maybe by then i can afford new hardware. (think with current trends option #2 gets less realistic each quarter).

not sure if i lost a bit of curiosity and spark. there's so many models, tools, harnesses, tweaks for harnesses, edited models and so many things. ultimately i don't care enough, it seems vapid to stay bleeding-edge informed about LLMs, if one's career does not directly depend on it. i mean, what the fuck even is a bonsai quant, this stuff makes me feel like an uninformed excel boomer even tho i absolutely don't am one :D

not a software engineer per se so i don't need 16 agents running 24/7 with openclaw. i want a local buddy who helps me write ansible/python faster, better, helps me analyze bugs, refactors small things. basically what Claude Web does, with the benefit of it reading the files itself and running locally.

maybe i just ignore the whole AI/LLM part and just buy some new hardware so i can use higher graphics settings while gaming, WAIT NO, that market was nuked by AI as well, guess i'll continue using my i5 from 2019.

> But now I mostly use local models

Do you have beefy hardware? i dream of using a local LLM, but neither my 24GB RAM M4 Air nor my PC with a RTX3080 and 16GB of RAM seem usable (yet).

i could label them usable if "prompt it and then wait for 6 minutes for it to change a single line" is deemed usable, which i don't.

spent the last weekend in a rabbit-hole of which models to use in what kind of setup, but i think with my hardware i'm just out of luck for now.

for private matters I can use Cloud AIs, but not allowed to use it for work-related matters, which is where i could use it the most. they do provide us an isolated AI environment where we can use Claude etc. for work stuff, but heavily rated (about 20 prompts per week per Claude model).

4ggr0··on We are going to kill "unalive"
to me, grape and unalive seem a bit different, semantically (not sure if that's the right word). of course both appeared because of algorithmic censorship.

unalive may be new, but by now it's just a synonym for suicide. sure, older people or people who are less online might not know it, but that's how language works. but in the end, suicide and unaliving both mean to kill oneself.

grape on the other hand is 100% just a way to censor the word, especially because that allows people to just use a grape-emoji to ensure that people know what they mean. could be that this escapes the online word as well, as it sounds "cute", making the act of talking about this subject a bit more palatable, maybe.

i get the point of the article, but it's a bit of a circlejerk to me - "huzzah, stop minding the algorithm, talk as you wish!". well yeah...but people started using these words because they couldn't use the original words, on these platforms. and now they're used to it. seems a bit "old man telling at clouds because other words are being used now".

i 100% resonate with the points about the billionaire-class being involved in language and causing people to talk differently, but that's not exclusive to online platforms. always has been, unfortunately. (can't mention the word socialism or communism when talking to people, explain the same rhetoric without using these words and suddenly everything is fine, to name one example).

should we go back to calling people ret##### fag####, was that censorship as well? or does language evolve and tolerances for certain words change?

i really don't get the fuss about 'unalive', the more i think about it. so 'suicide' is the word we should use, not 'unalive'. is 'killing oneself' okay? what about 'self-murder', 'ending it all', 'self-destruction'? are those okay because they're older synonyms? should we overall stop using synonyms which were created to make something sound less horrific (which humans do a lot). should we still talk about master/slave in IT?

4ggr0··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
i see :/

i did plan to upgrade my hardware in 2026. i formed that plan a couple of years ago. 2026 is now at 75% and i don't see a future where i can realistically afford a new gaming PC with equal performance to what i got right now.

RTX 3080 is the only upgrade i got over the years, otherwise it's an overclocked i5 with 16GB of RAM from 2018, all for around $2300(2018) or adjusted for inflation, $3000.

so AI steals my access to new hardware but doesn't run on my current hardware, love it.

I'm trying to setup a local LLM env since like a week now but am never really satisfied compared to just using Claude.

I guess one RTX3080 and 16GB of RAM are not enough for 2026?

4ggr0··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Alexandre Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo (Never read it until now, quite like it actually) EDIT: scrolled through the comments and saw a different person also reading this right now. I know that it's a popular book, still a bit fun that two HNers are reading a book from the 19th century at the same time. EDIT#2: okay, a bunch of people seem to be reading this right now, must be even more popular than i thought.

Neal Stevenson - Diamond Age

Rudy Rucker - Ware Tetralogy (old-school cyberpunk / high-scifi. i read Juicy Ghosts by Rucker last year and really dig his extravagant ideas. I had trouble understanding Juicy Ghosts at times, but the concepts that man is able to bundle together and flesh out, while creating an engaging page-turner is amazing. not much fluff.)

I mean it helps that there's around 9M people living there, 1/10th of Germany or about the same amount as London or New York.

Also helps to accumulate wealth by taking care of global blood-money and being a diplomatic hub :) and let's not forget the tons of gold we got gifted about a hundred years ago, sadly can't quite remember where we got that from.

4ggr0··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
I'm suspecting that this comment chain mixes up Anchovies and Sardines. I've never had anchovies which weren't pasty, tiny, and fell apart. Sardines on the other hand can totally be split in half most of the time.
4ggr0··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
For some reason this immediately got me thinking about Garum[0], probably because you mentioned anchovies, salt, umami and glutamates in the same paragraph :D

also, as you said chefs must know about this:

> Garum remains of interest to food historians and chefs, and has been reintroduced into modern food preparation.

ah i see, then they must use a similar process. i wonder how big streaming sites do it. underpaid global south workers who manually tag the intro for every episode, or do the files come pre-tagged by the production. maybe a mix of both.

i've used this plugin a lot, and it is nice, but a bit hit-or-miss. it analyzes all episodes of a show to start seeing a pattern in the beginning of shows, or checks chapters which my files rarely had. works well for most shows, but if a show has unique intros for every episode, it doesn't really work. also had trouble with 100% consistent intros, but i never really figured out why that happened.

kind of a 50% solution, works a lot of times but a lot of other times you still end up scrubbing. (also consider that if you install this plugin onto a large existing library, it's going to take a considerable amount of compute and real-world time to do complete it for every show).

4ggr0··on Jellyfin founder Andrew leaves team
> I'd have zero clue where I am in the 100+ series I'm tracking

curious question then - do you remember the content of what you were watching? i totally get that you don't know on what episode you are and i used and love Jellyfin myself, but if you're watching 100+ series "at once" i'm starting to wonder if you even remember the last episode of a show if you rotate so heavily, know what i mean? i barely remember an episode after a week, even if i exclusively watch one show. so either my memory is even worse than i thought, or - you have the memory of a savant ;)

missed the hype ten years ago, but now have a Pebble 2 Duo since about half a year. absolutely love it, although seeing images of the new models makes me a bit jealous. but just being able to see incoming messages on my wrist on a device i have to charge about once a month is so comfortable.

bit of a bummer that the new weather app is not for P2D, but well.

4ggr0··on I also filed the corners off my MacBook
i'm someone who takes a lot of care about their books, i especially don't like when the back is wrinkly/broken on paperbacks because of opening them all the way. after all that makes them break down faster in general, over time. and it looks worse in a shelf.

anyways, everyone handles their items differently, which is fine - a friend once borrowed a book from me which was in pristine condition after multiple years of me owning and reading it. when he returned it, the back was completely wrinkled, pages had dog-ears, he had bent the cover all the way around to be able to hold it better etc.

that kind of made me sad because it felt like something i took a lot of care to keep it in good condition was "destroyed" in a matter of weeks. of course i wasn't mad towards my friend because i realized that people handle books differently.

that being said. if someone borrows you something, try to keep it in more or less the same state as when it was given to you. accidents happen, of course. i on the other hand have learned to either not borrow books i care about, or make a point about me taking care of them when reading.

sometimes it's also not as easy as "just buy another copy". some books i care about because i bought them on a vacation, or someone gifted them to me. so the exact item has a sentimental value an additional copy will not be able to replicate. but again, i just learned to create two categories of books in my mind, those i borrow, and those i don't.

after all it's 2026, just download an eBook from Anna's Archive (if they borrow the physical copy from me there's no monetary transaction towards the author as well, so i really don't feel bad about it in these specific situations).

> immigration freeze far more draconian than anything Trump ever proposed

as a swiss i am very happy that we didn't vote this through, but you're still being very hyperbolic. they wanted to put a cap on the population, which is bonkers, don't get me wrong.

however, no jail-like deportation centers, gestapo-like policeforce searching for immigrants and unlawfully putting them into trucks and many more things trump did and wants to do which my mind tries to forget.

there is an issue with people hating immigrants in our country, but please don't suggest that we're on US/Trump level, which to me seems more like what the germans started to do in the beginning* of you know what and who.

*comparing it to the beginning on purpose. not yet on total annihilation mode, but seeing as there's reports of hundreds of people going missing from Alligator Alcatraz, and minding the people who have been shot/killed, y'all are doing a good job of repeating history.

4ggr0··on Swiss parliament lifts ban on new nuclear power plants
my summarized thoughts when reading through this comment section and being swiss myself - have y'all ever heard of solar and wind[0]? i know that battery storage is a challenge, but hey, we constantly glaze ourselves as having great universities, lots of wealth, stability, precise engineering etc.

so let's put our strength into battery storage. invest in research towards it. research it ourselves. build out renewable energy. sponsor such things in foreign places we steal, ehrm, i mean, trade resources from.

this whole nuclear debate feels like a defeat. well, we tried, seems too hard, let's got back to ye' olden times.

i am also aware that we use french nuclear power as a backbone constantly and still boast as being so advanced and green, but that's also helping my point.
