4ggr0··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
> If your computer is supported

That's not really the use-case for this. It's not possible anymore to use Windows with a local account (for a long time), the official UI only lets you login with a Microsoft Account. These commands are not used to install Windows on an unsupported PC, they're being used to create a local-only account.

I for one still got a Windows boot partition next to my Linux, but I refuse to create an account for it. The only way I can install Windows on my supported PC with a local account is by using these commands.

You used to be able to just press a small button. Then you had to disconnect the LAN cable and not connect a WLAN to create a local account. Then you had to open the Commandline and execute a single command. Now we're at the point where you have to execute multiple commands.

If they actually manage to make it impossible to use Windows local-only, that will truly be the nail in the coffin for me. Currently use Windows to play games which aren't supported on Linux, but this will turn into a hate_for_online_forcing > appreciation_for_kernel_level_anticheat_shitgames.

TL;DR Depends on who you ask, but yes.

i had a conversation with a colleague today - we both said that we'd feel more comfortable to visit China over the US, and for his next vacation where he would have to fly via the US he's now considering to take a different flight-path which avoids the US.

as someone from europe one of my dreams as a kid was to visit the great United States. 20 years later this has drastically changed, still never been to the US, but would now rather visit other places.

people are trying to migrate away from US tech to other alternatives.

just last weekend i was joking with the person i watch Formula1 with - the last race was in the US. anyways, we joked that we used to laugh at races and events being held in Azerbaijan, just because it seemed weird to hold western sports events in dictatorships, similar to the football world cup in Qatar. now a world cup and F1 race in the US feels at least as bad as the other options.

but that's my POV. another friend still wants to visit the US for a third time and wants me to go with him and someone else i now even recently got married in the US.

but for me and the people around me - yes, the status of the US has taken a hard nose-dive, especially in the last 1-2 years.

also doesn't help to grow up and learn about the US history, by which i mean the overthrowing of foreign governments, global NSA scandals, needless wars for oil, trade wars etc. etc. etc.

no ill will against the average american citizen, but writing this comment made me a bit angry again. your country's government and some parts of the population cause so much pain on a global scale, but y'all seem too isolated and privileged to realize that. add to this that not even US citizens seem to benefit from this, i mean even y'all get swindled.

you know, i still feel like visiting the US. i want to meet the people and get to know the culture which influences my life in a big way. it just feels wrong, almost like visiting Germany in the early 1930s or late 1920s as a tourist. hope y'all calm down sometime, you'll maybe catch me on Route66, in one of the big cities or wherever.

that's kind of the essence of my rant i think. i could list soooooo many places in the US i'd like to see. but right now and since a couple of years, i'd rather not. the world is big, nice places everywhere. y'all have some great marketing, that's for sure.

crazy how much time is wasted in US/VC tech.

> Reddit is arguably the worst place on the internet

as someone who left reddit so long ago that they don't remember it and really does not care about it, please tell me what's worse on reddit than the constant xenophobic, transphobic and general *phobic stuff on 4chan.

phobic does not even do it justice, as it just straight up advocates for whole races or genders to kill themselves (b-b-b-but, i-i-it's just a joke, kawaii).

> There's a few video editing tools on Linux

went through this process a couple of times. Kdenlive, Openshot, Shotcut. Sadly never found one i really like. problem for me is that i edit videos once every 2 years on average, so i never get to develop muscle-memory for these indie-linux-tools. with Davinci there's at least a ton of resources online to help me. i think i liked Kdenlive the most, but i also vaguely remember being really annoyed by the workflow and lack of a bit more advanced things. but as with proton, i should probably not loose hope and just try again the next time i "need" a video editing tool.

> My daughter who's now 6yo has only ever used Linux

that's really cute, glad that you're enabling these skills for her :)

> they're just not competing in the top end with Nvidia

i have the advantage of being a power-gamer but at the same time being concious of what i really need, so i'm sure a flagship AMD card will be more than enough for me. i of course don't care about ML and other use-cases, so get that it's not an option for everyone.

> 4chan isn't all /b/ and /pol/

maybe this is my bias, could very well be. maybe i should give it a 10th chance and browse the more useful boards.

i guess /g/ would be a start, do you have other recommendations? i mean i'm open to change my mind. for me 4chan stands for alt-right pipelines, spreading far-right ideology online etc., so i just really have a sour taste in my mouth when thinking about it.

> Is there proof mods push general threads or curate content?

how does this relate to what i said? i get the "we're a free platform where everyone can do everything and no one is responsible for anything", just a cheap excuse from my POV considering the unhinged, doxxy culture on there. sure, there are cute boards, nice. i am talking about the inhumane, unhinged slurry of shit.

"Sure my neighbour has a couple of cadavres in his cellar, but have you seen the pretty flowers on his balcony?"

but per usual you can't criticize 4chan in the slightest without its warriors appearing to defend it. i get it. 4chan did and does cool stuff. it also does absolutely disgusting things, surprisingly this always gets dismissed as 'it's only the couple of rogue boards which are crazy'.

4ggr0··on 4Chan Lawyer publishes Ofcom correspondence
the rasion d'etre of 4chan can probably be discussed forever, but i can't imagine donating money to such a vile, hate-filled platform. surely there are better causes fighting for the same things, right?

i know, freedom of speech, it's your money and not mine, etc.

for me Bazzite is perfect, as my Home-PC really is 99% used for gaming. every couple of years i want to edit a video, guess i'll need to search for another software, or just install Davinci Resolve on the dualbooted Windows :D

don't have as much Proton experience as you, but i also feel like it's gotten way better compared to 4-5 years ago when i first tried it.

i'm always very mindful when suggesting people to use Linux, as like you i work with Linux daily, so of course i'm going to have less trouble using it compared to Joe Schmoe who exclusively uses Windows and never installed an OS himself. but for people who aren't afraid of tinkering a bit, sure.

now at the point where i'm considering switching to AMD from NVIDIA, just because it seems way better for Linux.

4ggr0··on Retiring Windows 10 and Microsoft's move towards a surveillance state
i remember reading this tip on the steam community or reddit or wherever, unfortunately didn't work for me. i started Steam Big Picture Mode, unplugged mouse and keyboard, started the game with only the controller connected and it still didn't recognize it, no idea what went wrong. thinking about it now it maybe interpreted my DAC as an input device or whatever.

in the end i didn't care that much, as i only installed DS2 because my SO was playing it. apparently she didn't like the game anyways, so i just uninstalled it and that was it :D

4ggr0··on Retiring Windows 10 and Microsoft's move towards a surveillance state
+1, switched to Bazzite about three weeks ago. I did have to dualboot a Windows after a couple of days, unfortunately. Mostly related to Anti-Cheat and other shitty measures. Dark Souls II did not want to recognize my Controller, even though it works fine in every other game. Skate can't be played on Linux because of Anti-Cheat, but fuck EA anyways. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Dishonored 2 and Death to the Outsider and Bioshock worked fine. Did have to tinker with the graphics settings a bit and the experience is definitely buggier than on Windows, but the huge upside is that I don't have to use Windows anymore, or at least just as a fallback-option. I know care 0 about the Windows, it's on a separate SSD, haven't even set a Wallpaper or other things, which is rare for me.

I mean where would the West be if it wouldn't do exactly that in Africa, Southern America and surely other places (and did it in even more extreme ways, back when people didn't care that much).

ex. cocoa production in Africa, with European companies being the ones doing and profiting from it.

isn't there a difference between buying a gallon of milk every week because that's part of your standard household equipment versus an item you buy once every couple of years?

i think no one would disagree that there are things they buy very frequently, almost on a schedule. (then again, with these items people are probably very accustomed to buying the same brand of milk every week, so ads don't seem reasonable here as well).
