486sx33··on Ask HN: How do you have effective 1:1s with your manager?
Wow I gave this answer before reading the comments and there are a lot of scary comments. I am projecting love and positivity to everyone here who has had a poor experience. I can promise you that’s not how it is everywhere in the work force
486sx33··on Ask HN: How do you have effective 1:1s with your manager?
I’m sorry you’ve had managers that make you feel that way.

I can assure you that not every manager needs to book 1:1’s to fill their calendar.

486sx33··on Ask HN: How do you have effective 1:1s with your manager?
If one of my people want to skip the 1:1 I would never force them to do it anyway.
486sx33··on Ask HN: How do you have effective 1:1s with your manager?
We follow traction and use software called bloom growth. The 1:1 meetings with my employees are accessible to both of us and items can be put it at any time. We define long term goals and short term objectives and issues and work on them.

Some of my employees prefer a phone call and we just chat. Others like the structure. I spend 4 hours a week doing 8 x 30 min 1:1s

I’ve come to embrace that it doesn’t look the same for each person.

To answer your question directly, take some time and figure out for yourself, what are your work goals, what are your personal goals, what problems do you encounter at work that affect you that you feel could be solved. Bring out of the box ideas… unless you’re facing disciplinary action, the 1:1 is for you and your personal growth.

486sx33··on Tesla's team to suppress driving range complaints (2023)
No different than fuel range numbers (fuel tank capacity x mpg) for ICE vehicles. They are under perfect conditions in a lab with no accessories. It might not be realistic but it’s absolutely the best way to compare it to other vehicles.
486sx33··on Where are all the self-directed learners?
Perhaps they’ve learned not to waste their time and energy on initial applications.
486sx33··on Hudson's Bay, Canada's Oldest Retail Chain, Nears Bankruptcy
They are active online, but failed to invest in their physical stores. This coupled with increased rent from REITs and the significantly reduced standard of living for all Canadians during the past liberal era and constrained sales and bloated costs. Canada kills itself all the time, shoots itself in the foot. Decided higher taxes and more welfare is the answer!

486sx33··on Microsoft is killing Skype
It also , at least for people in some circles, doesn’t have the negative connotations that Teams does.

I’m more apt to agree to a Skype type setting than someone saying let’s setup a teams meet or I’ll message you on teams.

I am aware a Skype meeting and a teams meeting is essentially the same thing now, it’s just a bias in my mind.

486sx33··on Gene Hackman has died
I really enjoyed “The Firm”. I love that gene played many different roles but always felt familiar enough, yet serious.
