414techie··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
Does whether or not they sell to Google matter?

What’s the alternative? Roll your own custom phone analytics system?

414techie··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
Would it be different to you if a third company (not Google) provided that same phone number tracking service?
414techie··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Cool idea. Have you considered making this work on Windows?
414techie··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Why use Cassava over other options, such as Excel, CSVLint, or Notepad++?

Also, have you considered supporting Windows and Linux?

414techie··on Show HN: I built a frontpage for personal blogs
This is a very useful project. Thank you for taking it on!

I just spent at least 30 minutes reading instead of mindless scrolling. This reminded me of the good feelings I had when I first used the web. The content is novel and written for the authors enjoyment. The web was better for people then and you just recreated that.

I like the minimal version better, but it is hard to use on mobile. If there was a way that you could make a minimal version with better accessibility and larger fonts, I’d use that. Until then, I’ve bookmarked the modern version.

414techie··on Recoverable and Irrecoverable Decisions
Aren’t large decisions made up of small, day to day micro decisions?
414techie··on Recoverable and Irrecoverable Decisions
Great concept. Culturally, I think we are better at understanding this than ever before.

In the last 15–20 years, many people have been forced into an uncomfortable moment due to job loss (Great Recession, COVID, AI etc). They have learned to recover. Could this be why we see more entrepreneurs than ever before now?

414techie··on “Nothing” is the secret to structuring your work
I believe we clutter our workspaces because we suck at keeping iterations short. We always want to add one more feature, tweak one more thing, etc.

Eventually, some external pressure (boss, client, IM, whatever) causes us to open a second context simultaneously. Then it happens with a third, a fourth, etc

This is happening because the world is expecting shorter and shorter time to results due to better tooling in the last 10 years, but most have not figured out that all the LLMs and agents in the world won’t shorten the loop, only the person using them can do that.

I find that for any given problem, if I don’t see results in 30 minutes, it’s time to stop that problem and likely reshape it. If I don’t actually get the result in 90-120 minutes, I’m doing something wrong.

414techie··on Show HN: I've been building an ERP for manufacturing for the last 3 years
I currently work in an ERP adjacent industry serving M&D. I don’t think this is as beneficial as you think it is.

Your value prop lands really well with the Software Architect in me. That part of my skill set loves the idea of creativity, flexibility, etc.

The Director in me does not want that. That sounds like a money pit, never done, management nightmare. What kind of dev do I hire? Do I need a Product Manager for that? How long will it take? Sounds too hard to get a win as a senior leader.

Most of the software in the adjacent space (and ERPs) have “prescriptions” or an ecosystem to get customizations done. Code may get deployed in a special assembly, a special SDK exists, etc

A prescriptive way to get the job done is much more preferred for predictability, even if it is not as loved by the developers.

I think Carbon is a neat and ambitious offering - happy to chat more with you if desired.

414techie··on The new Paris métro
Is this something that could be automated?
414techie··on How to draw software architecture diagrams (2022)
Thanks for sharing. I love mermaid, and use it frequently. I’ll have to check out D2. I think declarative diagramming is a powerful tool to capture thoughts in a readable way that can be versioned like any other text.
414techie··on COBOL on Wheelchair: Micro web-framework for COBOL
Check out the moshix mainframe YouTube channel. You’ll get a great flavor of mainframe dev in an approachable style.
414techie··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
Personally, I don’t think this is an either/or. I think both prospective user interviews and ads are tools for this.
414techie··on The working from home illusion fades
I thought this was a pretty fair assessment of where remote work is at.

I think remote work is forcing the market to really reveal all of our incentives - as workers, as employers, etc - and to attempt to design a working system that best meets everyone's needs.

I think that when the market shifts to be less employee friendly, WFH will go down. When it shifts to be a hiring bonanza (as it was over the past couple of years) WFH will go up.

414techie··on John Boyer, blind software engineer, has died
Are your apps installed apps, or web apps? There is a tool called WAVE that can help expose a great deal of accessibility issues to fix on a website.

414techie··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Thanks for the reply. Your blog is great. I’ve enjoyed your content over the years.
414techie··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
How long did it take you to develop your Senior Mindset infoproduct? Curious what the ROI on your time looked like for that.
414techie··on Ask HN: Recommendations for Good Developer Conferences?
SoCraTes in Soltau, Germany is a great experience. It is about Software Craft and Testing.

It’s an unconference held at a hotel that is in a very rural location. People are very welcoming and social. I went in 2017, learned a lot, and had a great time.

414techie··on What would a recession mean for developers?
Yeah, but does that kind of problem really exist on a regular basis for a test engineer on that team? I doubt it.
414techie··on YouTubeDrive: Store files as YouTube videos
That is really interesting. I wonder if there were any other interesting uses of paid programming to solve problems like these around that time?
414techie··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
I think you’re learning that there is more to this career than just slinging commits. I can relate to the experience you are having.

At a certain point, the code just wasn’t enough for me. I still love code and systems, but it isn’t the only way I make impact anymore.

When I reached the point that I wanted something more rewarding, I started learning other skills. I have found business, sales engineering, delivery enablement, product development, and people management are really interesting.

I echo others who say to switch jobs. You’ve got to find a role that will let you branch out.

I’ve got a lot of those opportunities at a small tech company if anyone wants to chat btw…
