40yearoldman··on Looming demise of the 10x developer – an era of enthusiast programmers is ending
I think we just got it wrong.

In my experience, the “10x” developers are just doing their job.

Maybe we should focus on the dev/10 people, they just make people who are gitting stuff done look amazing.

The reality is a subset of engineers are just better, quicker and faster. They known things and can do things faster.

I have worked a verity of teams. However gross it is to you the person pulling in 30k of line of code in a complex system in 3 weeks is definitely something more than the average developer.

I know I know. Everybody is going now pile on with some crazy assumptions about code quality shit. Let me stop you. You were not there, the code was amazing and the code ran rock solid.

Also this was not a one off. Every project I worked with this person simply was the same way. 15 min sync, 3 days later amazing features, 90%+ unit test coverage, all while doing 9-5 and cooking dinner for her family after destroying that PR button.

So whatever you want to call them, they exist, and they are likely better than you in every metric you can measure.

Get over it do better.

40yearoldman··on Will Texas become too hot for humans?
> Texas consumes more petroleum than any other state. In 2020, the state ranked third by volume in per capita petroleum use, after Louisiana and Alaska.

That is the cost of wind. The amount of petroleum needed to make a wind farm is insanely larger, mostly caused by all the miles and miles of wires they need to be insulated.

But go on…

40yearoldman··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
It doesn’t. And they think putting something in parentheses makes it true. This is not lisp god damn it!
40yearoldman··on Profits are driving inflation. When will politicians and the BoE admit it?
You just tried to counterpoint with evidence that people are out spending more. You called it YOLOing.
40yearoldman··on In China, 35 is the cut-off age for employability

40yearoldman··on Electrifying everything at the rate required to meet our climate goals
Electrifying does not actually help meet climate goals. Nearly every approach to doing so will require an increase in oil production just to produce the plastics needed build an electrified world. On top of that the amount of emissions it’s going to take to mine the resources for batteries.

While I am fully on board with an electrified world, I won’t pretend it is for the “climate”.

40yearoldman··on Is ORM still an anti-pattern?
ORMs will always be bad. They take control away and lock you into a system where fewer people are using than the underlying tech being hidden.

SQL is not hard, and I today's world most people should be using indexed documents, vs trying to do inner and outer joins to save some bytes. And in the cases where all the advanced SQL stuff matters you probably are not going to want to use a ORM anyway.

40yearoldman··on Profits are driving inflation. When will politicians and the BoE admit it?
Here we go again. Another case is of if you say it enough it must be true.

Meanwhile drive by a mall or go to a store. They are packed. Lines are ling and people are falling over them selfs to buy stuff.

Cars. While recovering, are still hard to find. When dealerships have shortages they do massive markups. Lets are sold but huge profits per car. This price action is due to demand, bulls have to be paid.

Yet you totally ignore the masses of money injected into the economy. Hell we still have areas in CA where eviction is still banned and people are just living rent free.

There is just too much day to day evidence to consider your statement that gave zero examples as good faith arguments.

Next up. Replies replies showing a one off case of profit as status quo.

40yearoldman··on Reddit mods discuss forming a union and suing for back pay
That’s fine. Ans the mods who want pay now can just loose their modship. It’s not their site. Not their servers and are owed nothing.

Mods have always been abusive and used their outweighed power to push their political agendas. It’s time they got a taste of their own medicine

40yearoldman··on Reddit 1.0 was written in Lisp
I think requiring your startup in lisp also keeps the type of engineers away you don’t want.

In all of my career, it’s not those who know who have been good. It’s those who know how to learn new things fast that are good. It’s people who problem solve that make good engineers.

In the inverse. If somebody has a negative reaction to lisp, it’s a sign of a poor engineer.

40yearoldman··on NPM won't publish packages containing the word keygen
Every time npm comes up I remind everybody that npm is shit, and nobody should use it. They have a bad track record of doing things right and bad attitude when told.

But you keep using it.

I refuse to use it at work and refuse to use it in personal life. It’s not real software and will cause you harm.

40yearoldman··on A Tale of Unwanted Disruption: My Week Without Amazon
Unfortunately yah. You can’t just point to the next man you see and toss him in jail.

Bad things happen to people, it more than sucks. But without evidence who raped you there is little you can do. Sure report it, but no action can be taken on any man is no evidence of who did it.

But way to go, comparing somebody being called a name to rape. Clearly they are the same thing.

40yearoldman··on Westfield Walks Away from Downtown San Francisco Mall Property
It’s simple. You vote in stupid policy makers who have an agenda that does not actually align with the people. Who think all the bad things in the world exist because of successful people. You let them er policies and laws based off feelings, and perceived past aggressions, instead of logic and facts, and this is what happens.

> lack of substantiation

Without this there is no action anybody can take...

We can't live in a world where accusations without evidence hold weight, nothing will get done and everybody can just accuse anybody of anything to get their way.

Unpopular opinion, but people need to grow up. You getting called a name should probably in any case, not be actionable.

And in retro, if you think a door bell called you a name you probably are unfit to deliver packages to any doors, and should seek mental help.

40yearoldman··on A Tale of Unwanted Disruption: My Week Without Amazon
That is the entire point. Amazon has to make a decision better than what they did to handle the situation. What I am driving at is you call your delivery guy the N word has nothing to do with the extended services within the house. It just so happens Amazon owns a delivery service, and thus the shutdown spread from that into far more.

If somebody is harassing their delivery guy in any way, yeah, fine, don't deliver, make them pick it up at some location and use normal laws to deal with the harassment.

You would never get your amazon account canceled if the USPS worker said you called them a name.

In short, Amazon has to break up their business, at least when it comes for abuse issues on boundaries that have clear lines.

You fuck around with the Amazon deliver guy should not lock you out of your S3 account, shut and kill your AWS instances. Just as breaking some AWS rule should not prevent you from ordering and having delivered products from Amazon's main website.

40yearoldman··on A Tale of Unwanted Disruption: My Week Without Amazon
At a minimum, If somebody invest in such an ecosystem and is banned from it, the company should have you buy back the equipment at original retail value. This is just a start. There has to be some monetary penalty for the company to nudge them into less flipped reactions.

I also think there maybe should be blowback for false accusations on people who report them. Basically. You better damn well be sure you head what you heard. It’s becoming to easy to yell racist run away and ruin somebody’s life.

A secondary of this is the media. We keep saying there are racist everywhere. Even Biden said the biggest problem America has is white supremacy. People are going to find a racisim with out without it one actually existing.

40yearoldman··on Paul Graham on Remote Work
The problem is not that work like micro services can be done remote. The problem is remote workers end up doing other things than working. It makes a mess for meeting scheduling and collaboration. Effectively slowing the progression of the project down.

I work at a company who his hybrid and has remote. Every remote engineer is damn near impossible to work with, a forget anything happening on Mondays or Fridays.

“Oh sorry, the contractor is here” “Sorry, the lawn guy” “I will be afk, doing this thing I totally would never leave work to do, but it is so important now because I am at home”.

People simply can’t separate home life with work life, and the job becomes a hobby.

40yearoldman··on Farming technologies tackle climate-change threats
this looks like a good way for humanity get fuxked.

Not only will individuals loose the ability to farm, it will be locked up in companies. Who will likely make it illegal for others to do the same.

Beyond that we will likely loose access to all strains of plants that’s can grow well outside.

As a safe guard. Humanity needs a super farm that is isolated and trains and maintains the old ways.

> That's a much worse outcome from an equity lens

Bingo, that is the issue, everybody is worried about equity.

You can't have it, we need meritocracy, equity is just cruel and unusual punishment to future. It is a recipe for driving society to the lowest common denominator.

You should demand proper education or your money back.

(Side note, this is what we will get 10x with free college, and the guaranteed loans have already driven it this way a bit more)
