369548684892826··on Microsoft suspended the email account of an ICC prosecutor at The Hague
Why not? Someone has to do it.
369548684892826··on 16B Apple, Facebook, Google passwords leaked in largest data breach
So if this is real then it's got to be some widely installed keylogger?

Just FYI, Voidtools Everything can also search the contents of files
369548684892826··on Ask HN: Best cheap tablet for home dashboard
I've found Samsung A9 to be good for this. After enabling developer settings you can make it so the screen never turns off as long as it's plugged in. Plus there's an option to not keep the battery at 100% charge so it's less likely to swell up. Some models come with more RAM than others, it's probably worth paying the extra to get at least 8GB.

I've also heard good things about marp [0], and it gets bonus points for being FOSS

369548684892826··on I Built My Own Audio Player
People will literally build their own music apps instead of switching to Android. Is it just for the blue bubbles, or because of how everything "just works" (unless you want to play offline music)?
369548684892826··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Thanks for mentioning this, it looks exactly what I want; a markdown web app that stores the files using the filesystem on the backend!
369548684892826··on Try Switching to Kagi
Exactly, glad I'm not the only one!
369548684892826··on Darwin's children drew all over the “On the Origin of Species” manuscript (2014)
None of this applies to Darwin though, he was wealthy and didn't need to think about "working the farm".
369548684892826··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
If you've got linux on it have you tried enabling zram? I use it with aggressive settings on my X1 Carbon G6 with 8GB of RAM and it effectively gives me somewhere around 15GB of RAM. It does need a reasonably fast CPU, but probably worth trying on the Gen 1.
369548684892826··on Bletchley code breaker Betty Webb dies aged 101
Yes, there was a race track at Brooklands. Some sections of it are still there including some steep banked track.
369548684892826··on Denmark postal service to stop delivering letters
Either way, delivery driver trips have been reduced

369548684892826··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
>> 1. Parking apps are worse than parking meters.

> I certainly don't agree with that one. I really don't miss having to pay for a fixed number of hours and then having to figure out what to do if I'm running late (or wasting money if I get back early).

Pay-on-exit car parks are the answer to this. Combined with contactless card payment and that's peak parking experience.

369548684892826··on U.K. orders Apple to let it spy on users’ encrypted accounts
Actually, maybe this is what the government's end goal is. Free money!
369548684892826··on I still like Sublime Text
Fair enough, I've only tried it on Kubuntu 24.04 and it's been really good.
369548684892826··on Ask HN: Survey of Local Egg Prices
Equivalent to $3.36 including any sales tax in UK

edit: these are brown eggs, not sure it makes a difference (very rare to find white eggs here)

> I tried zed and it doesn't work with Linux

Did you mean to say Windows? It definitely does work with Linux

369548684892826··on I still like Sublime Text
An open source, fast, customizable cross-platform text editor with native UI and support for plugins and language servers. I don't think there's any other software that can tick all these boxes.
369548684892826··on I still like Sublime Text
You didn't mention debugging (breakpoints, step through, inspecting variable values at runtime). If you are writing code and aren't doing these things, you probably should be!
369548684892826··on How I Use Home Assistant in 2025
Doesn't this idle at about 100 watts though? Which would be about £25/month for me. I found a lower spec Ryzen 5700 system which idles at about 20 watts is more than enough for Jellyfin etc.
369548684892826··on Where is London's most central sheep?
This probably works best in Idaho
369548684892826··on Show HN: Is it 1pm?
I don't know if I would say 13:59 is 1 PM

Follow up thought: Could you also make isit2pm.com and so on, so I can use this to tell the time?

369548684892826··on Coding Font Selection 'Tournament'
I like the build of Iosevka that the Zed editor people made, called Zed Mono. It's hosted on github [0] but there are no screenshots. You can see kind of how it looks in the screenshots of their editor on their website though [1]

369548684892826··on Wishing Everyone a Happy Solsthelion
Happy Solsthelion! It's not the best portmanteau though as it's taken the 'sun' part of both its donor words. Happy Peristice!
369548684892826··on I built a platform for discovering and sharing Chrome extension collections
As a user that might use referral links to support the youtube channel, I do feel in an indirect way this does hurt the user
369548684892826··on Ask HN: Why do banking apps care about your phone OS
No disagreement here, I was just trying to answer OP's original question.

I tie my bank accounts to two devices in case one goes wrong, and neither of those leave the house to reduce the chance of getting lost or stolen.

369548684892826··on Ask HN: Why do banking apps care about your phone OS
Apps offer built in biometric login, websites don’t. So that’s one difference, and maybe it’s also the answer to the question of why they don’t allow rooted devices which might allow bypassing biometric checks.
369548684892826··on Ask HN: What email client are you truly happy with in 2024?
Do you have a way to get push email notifications? Last I checked the way to do this is with IMAP IDLE but that seemed to drain the battery quite quickly.
369548684892826··on Ask HN: Kotlin or Go (or both) for back end API? advantages vs. disadvantages
I’ve only used a little bit of Go. If the API is going to be small and simple I’d use Go, the build and deploy process is probably going to be slightly easier to deal with?

Otherwise I’d choose Kotlin because it seems a more fun and flexible language than Go. And you also have loads of Java libraries at your disposal.
