33W··on Ask HN: Advice if mobile platform I built can be used for other verticals?
I think to expand, you'll want to consider the use case where someone would want to be subscribes to multiple groups at once (most folks don't belong to multiple churches).

With that enhancement, I would envision it for Farmer's Markets, Trivia Nights, Bowling Leagues, D&D Groups, etc - just about anything that meets on a weekly basis.

33W··on New Game of Thrones episode appears in the wild
I've been thinking about the potential impact of leaked episodes on HBO.

Unless it becomes a sustained leak, do you think that a significant number of people will stop (or fail to start) and HBO/HBO Now subscription? Sales for HBO itself are contacts through the cable companies, and those who have chosen to subscribe to HBO Now have decided that illegal downloading is inconvenient.

Edit: The standalone streaming service is HBO Now, not HBO Go.

33W··on Ask HN: How does board recruiting work?
Thanks, that's a great article. I'm also looking at it from the perspective of building the attributes, skills, etc to become an independent board member in the future.

I currently sit on the board of my community association, and enjoy the advisory style of influence. I'd like to continue this experience with startups, non-profits, or for-profits.

I'm early in my career, and it sounds like a lot of the qualifications are time, experience, network, or money - but I'd like to take any active steps that I can at this time.

33W··on Ask HN: Handling an internship where you didn't really learn anything?
I think that it is worth putting on there - the best way to get a new job is to have a job already. This shows that an employer was willing to bring you in, you didn't steal stuff, etc.

I'm sure that you learned something - a bit about corporate politics, why we should automate things, or just how to show up on time.

It doesn't need to be a major part of your resume, but I would include it certainly.

33W··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2017)
I see on the jobs page that it must be current, are able to sponsor clearances?
33W··on Coin Dance – Bitcoin Cash Hard Fork
Yes & no, consider this like a stock split. But instead of an even split, where your 1 share of GOOG becomes 2, both with the same price, you get 1 (or fraction of) BTC and BCC, where BTC = ~$2700 and BCC = ~$230.

The overall value may go up, but you may also see the cost of BTC drop by the value of BCC (like when a dividend is paid on a stock).

BCC could also lose adoption, and lose value significantly.

33W··on Ask HN: How is your standing desk working for you?
I like to use my desk in a standing setting when in virtual meetings. Even if I'm not on camera, I feel more confident, assertive, etc. One of those posture -> psychology.
33W··on Ask HN: How is your standing desk working for you?
My office has these as well - maybe 1 in 20 people use it as standing on a regular basis.

We do use them more often when someone swings by your desk to look at some code or troubleshoot. Having everyone at the same height balances the dynamic and makes the screens easier to see.

33W··on Launch HN: D-ID (YC S17) – Protecting Identities from Face Recognition Tech
Perhaps I'm overly plugged into political news right now, but I read your name as "Democrat - Idaho".

33W··on The mythic function of the zombie apocalypse narrative
It would be interesting to see a left-wing values zombie movie:

"In a world where where a new disease ravages the body and mind of those affected, modern medicine and epidemiological responses isolate and manage the impact. Financial and social assistance is given to those displaced, encouraging social interaction and minimizing crime and suffering."

33W··on Master Card, Cisco, and Scotiabank Join the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance
I see the mastercard logo, but not included in the list.
33W··on Google relaunches Glass for businesses
I agree that this is the better starting market for Glass.

I think they saw the difference between Apple and Blackberry and believed that penetrating the consumer market first would drive demand within the business market.

33W··on Show HN: tttfi – Middleware for IFTTT
Not owning stock specifically, but having an open brokerage account added to a multi-product discount.
33W··on Show HN: tttfi – Middleware for IFTTT
I use IFTTT for a few different things:

1. Logged to a google spreadsheet when I enter and leave a radius around my work. I have to log hours worked, so this gives me a starting point at the end of the week for when I was physically here.

2. I get a stock price emailed to me when the market closes. I own a few shares of a single company (lowers my auto insurance premium, and keeps my engaged in the market), so this helps me see day-to-day changes.

3. I get the weather pushed to my phone at 6am every morning, so it is there on my lock screen as I'm getting up.

4. I get an email every time someone goes into space. SPACE.

33W··on Employees Who Stay in Companies Longer Than Two Years Get Paid 50% Less
Thanks for the brain dump, I'm always learning more about these types of things. Personally, I think I'm fairly paid at the moment, but this is something to consider if that changes in the future.
33W··on Employees Who Stay in Companies Longer Than Two Years Get Paid 50% Less
This is an interesting problem. Let's say I think I'm underpaid and speak with my manager about it.

If I go in with broad market data, the argument could be made that my specific circumstances make the general market data invalid.

If I go in with specific job offers, then I present myself as a risk to leaving, and the conversation may be more adversarial than I intend.

So could there be a service that sits in between? my-market-rate.example.com. Employees submit resumes, and we abstract the companies, roles, etc. Submit those resumes to companies to get an expected salary for that position and indicate interest to hire.

33W··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2017)
To clarify, the position is in Austin? The link you provided says San Antonio.
33W··on CEOs Want Their Offices Back
I'd be curious to see what people think of when they say "open office". The description from you and others of < 12 people in a common space doesn't fit my definition. The open offices I've experienced are ~100 people separated by rolling whiteboards at best.
33W··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
What considerations do persons in the US need to take into account before opening a foreign bank account?
33W··on Ask HN: Do you have a website you want to sell?

33W··on “Dig once” bill could bring fiber Internet to much of the US
Or for me, accidentally cut the copper line to the rest of the neighborhood and had to dig a trench in my front yard to repair it. I'm on the corner and towards the front of the subdivision, so I had quite a bit of work being done over the past 6 months.
33W··on Launch HN: Sudden Coffee (YC W17) – Instant coffee that doesn't suck
Same here - I'd pay $20 for a 5 count sample without a subscription.
33W··on 20,000 UC Berkeley Lectures Made Illegal, So We Irrevocably Mirrored Them
Perhaps more like demolishing a building because every door has steps, and it is impractical to add 20,000 ramps.

I'm not sure what the answer is - just finding a closer analogy.

33W··on Weapon physicist declassifies rescued nuclear test films
I normally listen to all podcasts on 2x speed, but I usually slow Dan Carlin down to 1.5x. He has such a great storytelling style that gets degraded at higher speeds, IMO.
33W··on How I Made $70k Self-Publishing a Book about Ruby on Rails
For anyone wondering (as I was), Kindle Unlimited pays per page based on the size of the fund (number of subscribers total), and the number pf pages read during that month.

>Here are some examples of how it would work if the fund was $10M and 100,000,000 total pages were read in the month:

The author of a 100 page book that was borrowed and read completely 100 times would earn $1,000 ($10 million multiplied by 10,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).
The author of a 200 page book that was borrowed and read completely 100 times would earn $2,000 ($10 million multiplied by 20,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).
The author of a 200 page book that was borrowed 100 times but only read halfway through on average would earn $1,000 ($10 million multiplied by 10,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).
33W··on That's Slumlord-ess, Fool
I wonder if the view of Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units would change based on the number on one place. For example, a single building with 12 SROs in the middle of a single family home neighborhood is less offensive than one with 100 units, or 1000.

Or a single unit SRO, tiny house, that could be easily incorporated into existing properties. Again, the tech exists to create a living space in a 100sqft footprint, but the regulations make adoption difficult.
