3131s··on Andrew Yang's Data Dividend Project is pushing Big Tech to pay users for data
Right, that's why I use heroin.
3131s··on Odds of communicating with 36 other possible intelligent civilizations are small
The only reason that most people do not accept the obvious sentience of many animals is that they want to keep killing and eating them. It's as simple as that.
3131s··on Sergey Brin has a secret disaster relief charity
> democratic accountability

That's so far from what exists now in the US, it's doubtful that it's an inherent factor in our government's dysfunction.

There are many governments that aren't totally useless, so if you're looking at the US and thinking that we can't do any better, that shows a serious lack of imagination and perspective.

3131s··on The Nova Scotia shooter case has hallmarks of an undercover operation?
"Grand Parent", as in the post being replied to originally.

I'm also referring to the testimony of Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, a former high-ranking member and son of the leader of the Sinaloa cartel.

The US government has an unofficial alliance with the Sinaloa cartel.

It's always been my guess that Fast & Furious was about supplying arms to them, or at least that makes more sense than "gathering information" as an objective.

3131s··on Apple’s App Store fees are ‘highway robbery’ – House antitrust committee chair
Rich people are introspecting, poor people are about to revolt.
3131s··on Microsoft pitched facial recognition to the DEA
We don't have twenty years.

It's inhuman and stupid to put people in prison for selling drugs. In the meantime the US is going to crumble under policies like this, while gangs will become increasingly powerful.

3131s··on Advice to Young Web Developers
Firefox must have performed poorly on Windows / MacOS in the past, because Firefox on Linux was never actually that bad.

I've used Firefox for 15+ years now and never had the problems that people talk about.

3131s··on Microsoft pitched facial recognition to the DEA
> Decriminalize individual possession of small quantities of (most) drugs.

But then you haven't ended the war on drugs. We need legalization, not decriminalization.

3131s··on PinePhone: PostmarketOS Community Edition
PostmarketOS is based on Alpine, it's minuscule in comparison to Android.
3131s··on After GitHub CEO backs Black Lives Matter, workers demand an end to ICE contract
Pathetic.
3131s··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
I always have at least 4 windows open in a project workspace, those being a text editor, a file browser, a terminal, and a web browser.

Currently I use i3 with packages pulled in from XFCE to handle sessions and power management, plus xfce4-appfinder and xfce4-panel (started and killed with MOD keys of course) because I wanted something beyond d-menu / b-menu.

It all works very well and was easy to configure.

3131s··on Minneapolis City Council members announce intent to disband police department
Don't worry, private security contractors will step in and fill the void!

I'm from Minneapolis. This was necessary because the MPD has been out of control for a long time, but I too am curious what the actual plans for replacement are, or if this is just a restructuring.

3131s··on Chan Zuckerberg Initiative scientists: FB’s practices ‘antithetical’ to mission
It would be nice to know the answer to these sort of questions. When using online services, and especially enormous ones like Facebook, it's always good to ask yourself "why am I seeing this?" or "how did I get here?".
3131s··on Brave’s browser has been autocompleting websites with referral codes
I honestly assume that 80% of what I've seen pushing Brave against all basic common sense is astroturfing.

Just use Firefox! Why would anyone ever choose Brave when it is proprietary and better free alternatives exist? This company's track record of disrespecting their users and sketchy monetization is so blatant, and its creator is a homophobic tool who is responsible for all of us writing Javascript instead of Scheme.

3131s··on Brave’s browser has been autocompleting websites with referral codes
You must know about Firefox right?
3131s··on A mysterious company’s Covid-19 papers in top medical journals may be unraveling
It was obvious, that's why most every other country across the world started wearing masks while the US didn't.
3131s··on Police attacks against journalists across the U.S. since May 28
Sure, don't assume malice with regular people, but US politicians are completely disingenuous and they know exactly what they're doing. It is rare for them to "really believe what they say they believe", because saying anything true at all pretty quickly starts to reveal their financial interests.
3131s··on What Did Bach Sound Like to Bach?
Composers did take advantage of the interesting properties of earlier temperaments.

With a non-equal temperament each key signature has a characteristic tonality due to its particular series of intervals, and a key that is 'far away' from the home key that an instrument is tuned for can have harsher sounding intervals. Equal temperaments like 12-TET were favored at least in part because they opened up possibilities for romantic era composers interested in exploring new ideas in modal harmony and more elaborate song structures.

3131s··on Surveillance tools used by the Minneapolis Police Department
It's a widely accepted claim, just so you know.
3131s··on Surveillance tools used by the Minneapolis Police Department
I'm also from Minneapolis and had my car towed twice under really questionable circumstances.

My roommate got it worse though. He was towed for parking within 5 feet of driveway, yet the driveway was invisible because it had been completely covered by the 4-5 feet of snowed piled up on the side of the road.

3131s··on Surveillance tools used by the Minneapolis Police Department
I'm glad that the Minneapolis folks have skipped this completely useless advice.
3131s··on Remote work has its perks, until you want a promotion
Since America has no problem with authoritarian measures that are meant to 'protect' us from ourselves and each other, at this point we should just forcibly take away everyone's vehicles and make them ride bicycles.

It is illegal for me to do things far less dangerous to myself and others compared to driving a car, and as someone who has no plans to own a car again, I neither want to breathe in exhaust fumes or risk getting hit by a vehicle just because others feel entitled to drive. If we're going to live in a nanny state, let's actually maintain a consistent framework for measuring harm and stick to it.

3131s··on Caffeine: A vitamin-like nutrient, or adaptogen
Raw nutmeg is actually a very powerful drug, and even dried ground nutmeg has an interesting long-lasting high if you take enough of it.

I've done it a long time ago... it's really unpleasant to actually consume that much nutmeg, even in gel capsules, but the feeling is pleasant, warm, and hazy. I took it in the middle of the day and started to feel the effects late at night, and then the next morning I woke up sky high. It's a fairly lucid drug with an strong body high, but I don't recommend it!

3131s··on Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?
Making oil is a serious hassle and in some places life already has more than enough authenticity to go around.

I don't think this is about some broader cultural thing around convenience, is it? Isn't it just about legality? Some people actually depend on marijuana on a daily basis, and for those of us that do it's really annoying to have grind up, dry, decarb, cook, strain, etc. every few weeks.

3131s··on Breathing habits are related to physical and mental health
I'll add an endorsement for lifting, especially as part of cross-training for another sport to avoid injury.

I am also extremely partial to sprinting. The closest you can come without drugs to a certain type of very lean and muscular physique is to combine lifting and sprinting. Sprinting is great for your abdominals, quads, calves, so it can really balance out the bulky, top-heavy look that can come from only lifting.

3131s··on Jack Dorsey is giving Andrew Yang $5M to build the case for a basic income
You almost understand.

They'll have to raise the wage to get anyone to scrub those toilets, and that's the whole point. UBI reduces the power asymmetry between employer and employee, and gives the employee more leverage to negotiate better wages and conditions.

3131s··on Jack Dorsey is giving Andrew Yang $5M to build the case for a basic income
This argument gets made over and over, never with any logic attached to it.
