Two out of the three times in my life that I've had a gun pointed at me, it was the cops!
3131s··on Why Programming Is Hard to Fundamentally Improve (2017)
Get on Soulseek / Nicotine! It's still great...
3131s··on Billionaires Build
Sounds like someone was bankrolling you through this period of failure?

And from you're own admission you "had to scrounge for change" a few times... I know people who nearly starved to death as little children. In fact there are starving, begging kids out on the streets all over the city I live in.

It doesn't sound like you have any familiarity with the type of extreme poverty that hundreds of millions of people on Earth live through, for whom it is clearly not a choice.

3131s··on No One Wants Used Clothes Anymore (2018)
I live in a poor country like this -- it's odd to me that there is a huge stigma against giving even a few dollars directly to beggar children, but if it's a factory paying them the same amount for a day's work then it's ok for you as the consumer to indirectly pay that wage through your purchase.
3131s··on Horseshoe crab blood to remain big pharma's standard as group rejects substitute
Why are you even comparing it to life in the wild anyway? These are animals that we're bringing into existence and the alternative is no existence at all.

You clearly have no clue as to the intelligence of these animals and the complexity of their desires beyond being "pampered, fed, and protected". If it were you, would you rather take a chance on surviving in the wild? Or being enslaved, separated from your children, shackled, fattened, and eventually butchered is preferable?

> I'm sure corporate farms treat cows as well as they treat their people.

They eat their employees upon retirement from milking too?

3131s··on “Accentism” is real, but impossible to end
> Anyone who pretends they have no bias against X people for Y characteristic just isn't aware of their own biases.

Bias is easier to mitigate when you ignore any generalization about any large group of people, such as a linguistic group. Human nature is no excuse for having delusions about an accent.

3131s··on “Accentism” is real, but impossible to end
It didn't flip a switch for me because I never had any bias against someone for their accent. My question is why has this false, irrational belief about accents persisted for so long in America? There are tons of people in this thread talking about their bias, and I don't understand what led them to that state of mind in the first place.
3131s··on “Accentism” is real, but impossible to end
> but I still have a distinct bias against certain regional accents

Why? First thing you learn in linguistics 101 is that everyone has an accent and there is no "good" or "bad" dialect. What is so hard about internalizing this for most people?

3131s··on Ask HN: I have $1M cash in my bank. How can I stretch it so I can retire?
A million dollars would save hundreds of lives if directed to the right people or causes. If you are spending that amount of money all on yourself and your comfort in a few months, you're a bad person. It's that simple.
3131s··on Psilocybin and migraine: First of its kind trial reports promising results
Yeah, I've gotten love letters too. But that doesn't change the reality of what I said! It's not legal, if you order enough they will charge you under the Federal Analogue Act... or even on a small order they'll make up whatever story they want and raid you if they suspect you're up to something else more lucrative.
3131s··on Ask HN: I have $1M cash in my bank. How can I stretch it so I can retire?
People who spend this much money on their own leisure are repulsive.

3131s··on Psilocybin and migraine: First of its kind trial reports promising results
Unfortunately not really, as 4-AcO-DMT would definitely fall under the Federal Analogue Act. And if you order it in the mail (as is common with "research chemicals") they'll tack on charges for mail fraud and trafficking across state lines.
3131s··on To do politics or not do politics? Tech startups are divided
Do you want the obvious answer? Clearly I don't advocate high taxes that would leave room for the black market to undercut the price. I've had this exact argument so many times...

BTW, I'm not misleading you in the other thread. I know no one wants to believe that their own government could do that, but unfortunately they did. It's an "open secret", something like NSA spying was circa 2005.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandar_bin_Sultan_Al_Saud

Bandar helped negotiate the 1985 Al Yamamah deal, a series of massive arms sales by the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia worth GB£40 billion, including the sale of more than 100 warplanes. After the deal was signed, British arms manufacturer British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) allegedly funnelled secret payments of at least GB£1 billion into two Saudi embassy accounts in Washington, in yearly instalments of up to GB£120 million over at least 10 years. He allegedly took money for personal use out of the accounts, as the purpose of one of the accounts was to pay the operating expenses of his private Airbus A340. According to investigators, there was "no distinction between the accounts of the embassy, or official government accounts [...], and the accounts of the royal family." The payments were discovered during a Serious Fraud Office investigation, which was stopped in December 2006 by attorney general Lord Goldsmith.[68][69] In 2009, he hired Louis Freeh as his legal representative for the Al-Yamamah arms scandal.[70]

A court affidavit filed on 3 February 2015 claims that Zacarias Moussaoui was a courier between Osama bin Laden and Turki bin Faisal Al Saud in the late 1990s, and that Turki introduced Moussaoui to Bandar.[72] Zacarias Moussaoui stated on oath and wrote to Judge George B. Daniels that Saudi royal family members, including Prince Bandar, donated to Al-Qaeda and helped finance the 11 September attacks. The Saudi government continues to deny any involvement in the 9/11 plot, and claims there is no evidence to support Moussaoui's allegations in spite of numerous previous intense investigations, noting that Moussaoui's own lawyers presented evidence of his mental incompetence during his trial. Leaked information from the redacted portion of the 9/11 Commission Report states that two of the 9/11 hijackers received $US130,000 in payment from Bandar's bank account.

3131s··on To do politics or not do politics? Tech startups are divided
> Until people refuse to smoke illegal marijuana en mass, the markets are effectively the same.

Which will only happen when it's legalized, which is exactly my point.

3131s··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
No. Under a reasonable set of values "what's good for the US" and "what's good for the world" are so often aligned that it's a very good heuristic.
3131s··on To do politics or not do politics? Tech startups are divided
> Remember that any time you support the marijuana market (legal or illegal) as a purchaser and indirectly add demand to the curve that feeds the cartels in Mexico.

I hope you support drug legalization, otherwise this attitude is massively hypocritical.

And please explain why buying legal marijuana supports the cartels? Are people buying Mexican brick weed from dispensaries now?

3131s··on To do politics or not do politics? Tech startups are divided

Classic HN... "Can't you just let me rake in all this cash without the guilt trip over all the bad things I'm doing?"

3131s··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
A whole lot of these threats are manufactured. You know that members of the Bush administration helped orchestrate the 9/11 attacks, right?

> Energy efficiency doesn't translate to costs of patty raw materials. Cattle can graze on uncultivated land, getting that portion of food for virtually free. There are other added costs to cattle farming outside of feed.

Every time someone says this, but it's like 97% of cattle in the US that are crop-fed.

It's wrong to eat meat.

3131s··on McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu
As a vegetarian I just don't like tasting even trace amounts of meat in my food.

Would you care if bits of human carcass were mixed into your food? That's how I feel about the cows that you all are murdering.

3131s··on McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu
A lot of processing does entail removing fiber and other nutritional content. That's why I just eat normal vegetables, not lab atrocities created at McDonald's.
