2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on 10 KB Club: Curated list of websites whose home pages do not exceed 10 KB size
> we're over-indexing on "as fast as possible"

Solid research on this exists, so there is not much to deny, at least when your goal is selling to the average user.

But: where is this magical place where people put heavy emphasis on performance? It certainly isn't here, and I would like to visit it for once. Companies caring, or giving their programmer the time to care, about performance are absolutely a rare sight. Unless they work in areas in which they are forced to care about it, and even then many stick to the minimum.

Snappy, low latency software is such a delight to encounter because it is just so damn rare. Especially on the web, I constantly feel like I'm wading through molasses, and the only reason I am able to endure this constant, agonizing pain is that I've gotten so used to it...

"One of the biggest"? I looked at the instance, it is octodon.social, which does not even make top 50.
2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on TIC-80 tiny computer
What an ignorant and unnecessarily dismissive comment. While Pico8 did kick off the popularity of "fantasy consoles", there are a number of them now, Pixel Vision 8 [1] would be another example.

TIC-80's specs [2] are different as well.

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential (2021)
Evernote absolutely did realize its potential. The problem is that they threw everything into the trash afterwards with their decisions.

It's what happens when you don't care about building a decent product.

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Ask HN: Has Mastodon blown its big chance?
Fully agree, I don't get this worldview where anything that does not take the undisputed nr. 1 spot is to be considered a failure. I created my Twitter account ~10 years ago, I had barely any noteworthy interaction on it. I used it mainly to follow interesting accounts and people, but it never managed to convince me to tweet a lot myself.

On Mastodon I am more active than I've ever been on Twitter. This is of course also a side effect of it being new and exciting for many people. But what exactly do I get from Mastdodon becoming gigantic? All I need is a healthy, active userbase.

I don't care if Mastodon ever "overtakes" Twitter, all I care about is whether Mastodon can cultivate enough active users to stay healthy.

It is actually pretty amusing to know that even as an absolute nobody you can and will easily, and even completely unintentionally, hurt the feelings of the richest man on earth to such a degree that he will think more about you than you have ever thought about him.

Update: And he even deleted the Tweet now!

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Mastodon Is Awesome
I finally gave Mastodon a try because many interesting Twitter accounts I follow moved there, or at least got active on it and broadcasted the fact. I have to admit I am positively surprised so far. Very much so.

Now everything depends on how much activity remains once the current dust settles.

Will Mastodon overtake Twitter? I still doubt it, but honestly I really can't imagine why I would care about that as long as Mastodon manages to establish, nurture, and retain a healthy userbase. Which is all I would need to keep using it.

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on If you die in the game, you die in real life
As always, Silicon Valley techbro CEOs only deliver the boring and shitty part of SciFi dystopia without any of the cool and exciting advantages.
2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on If you die in the game, you die in real life
No one is taking it seriously, everyone is just satirizing reactions to posts like the one submitted here. But since you are taking those reactions seriously, they must be good satire.
2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Ask HN: What can I personally do to fight AGAINST the Copilot class action?
No, one does not, in fact, have to admit that. Your statement represents an opinion.
2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
I also fled from Ubuntu recently due to Snaps, they are just plain terrible in every regard. I'm now much happier with Debian and Fedora when it comes to "plug and play" Distros.

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Ask HN: How is it possible to be the CEO of 5 companies at the same time?
Like many, I have a lot of respect for Carmack. But I'm not sure how his opinion on Musk is relevant. Nor do I see why I should take Carmack's opinions as gospel.

When it comes to Carmack's comments on large scale businesses he says a number of things nowadays that one might consider one step away from PR talk (or business diplomacy). Such statements from him might not come from a place of dishonesty, but he certainly is not "honest to a fault" either nowadays. [1]

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Is Google getting worse? Why critics say ads, spam sites are killing search
Depending on the topic and search query it at least has become harder to find information written by actual human beings, and not some garbage sites 100% created and designed for SEO. These sites typically contain lots of generated (or at least mindlessly typed) filler text. Sometimes they have some information inbetween this gibberish, sometimes they completely look like they came out of a markov chain generator.

Because of this it is often necessary to append something like "reddit", "forum", "wiki", or "news" to my search, lest I only encounter SEO trash.

I believe I can estimate with confidence that Bing and DuckDuckGo are nowadays better than Google during half of my searches. And that was certainly not the case 2 years ago.

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Ask HN: What is Elon Musk's strategy in buying Twitter?
In his statement he already indirectly distanced himself from this promise. [1]

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Elon Musk has taken control of Twitter and fired its top executives
"Fired" has such a negative connotation in this context. Given their hefty bonuses, I highly doubt the top executives were all that unwilling or unhappy.

Ex CEO Parag Agrawal alone will receive an estimated $42 million. [1]

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Elon Musk on why he bought Twitter
> I also very much believe that advertising, when done right, can delight, entertain and inform you; it can show you a service or product or medical treatment that you never knew existed, but is right for you. For this to be true, it is essential to show Twitter users advertising that is as relevant as possible to their needs. [...]

> Fundamentally, Twitter aspires to be the most respected advertising platform in the world that strengthens your brand and grows your enterprise. [...]

So if I cut out the typical, empty "to make the world a better place" talk, the only useful information I can derive from this is that we can expect even more tracking, ads, and algorithmic crap littering our timelines?

Let us also not ignore that he is forced to buy it, due to his shenanigans.

As somone who never really viewed systemd as a problem I'm starting to think the systemd "haters" were actually right, at least somewhat...

Viewing Poettering as some kind malicious entity undermining projects sounds like a conspiracy theory. But now with him working for Microsoft his actions do look like a lot like the "embrace, extend, and extinguish" pattern to me. Yes, yes "Microsoft <3 Linux", of course...

And now I am supposed to cheer for the groundwork for the creation of an allmighty authority with the ability to "sanction" some (parts of) operating systems, but not others?

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on El Salvador's Bitcoin experiment: $60M lost, $375M spent
El Salvador's bitcoin experiment: $60 million lost, $375 million spent, little to show so far

Key Points:

- El Salvador has lost around $60 million on its bitcoin bet one year into a nationwide crypto experiment.

- The use of bitcoin in El Salvador appears to be low amid the market volatility.

- The country faces plummeting economic growth and a high deficit.

2pEXgD0fZ5cF··on Ask HN: What are the best general math workbooks?
I disagree, what is common are questions or discussions on math books in general which are typically dominated by higher math and material for people already in posession of a stem degree. However many, if not most, math books are not suited for self study. I don't often see discussions on fundamentals or other "unsexy" parts of mathematics.

I find OPs question refreshing in a way.
