2h··on The art of knowing when to quit
As I already mentioned, I do not care about the point you are arguing. I only care about the point I made, which is "assuming Seinfeld DID end early, why did they do that, and what can people learn from it".

somehow you read the article (assumedly), read a top comment, read MY comment, and still missed the point of the article. Its not about whether or not Seinfeld ended early in your opinion or my opinion. Its "assuming that Seinfeld DID end early, why did they do that, and what can others learn from that".

Highly misleading. I've compiled plenty of older Go code. It just seems like you don't know how to deal with Go code, unless it's been nicely packaged as a module with go.mod

I think you missed the unspoken point of the article. The Seinfeld interview in particular is excellent, and maybe the best example of the last twenty years of "leaving on top". King honestly thought they were cancelled, because even then "ending early" was unheard of.

The point is that people get tired, they lose motivation, or they just feel that it's good enough. They lay down the gauntlet for the next programmers. Not in earnest, but in resignation.

2h··on Toxicity in Open Source Discussions
I had a couple of popular repos. Eventually I just started charging for issues. No payment? Issue closed. Stress went way down. If I see an issue I want to fix, I will fix it, for free or otherwise. But the default is "pay me", which helps set expectations.

The code is still available and free, support is not free.

2h··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
this is not true. with Android version at least, an AMO account is also required.
2h··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
yes, thats all true. however people should be able to choose their own level of protection. not have the most secure (and most cumbersome) rammed down their throats.
2h··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
Yep. Firefox is my browser, but their add-on story is garbage.
2h··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
You might want to read them yourself before throwing the link around.

no dont. I would like to see less people doing browser extensions, and more people writing simple servers. so many companies offering free tier, it would be helpful for people to share who they chose and why, and for people to swap recommendations.

extensions allow you to bypass the same-origin policy, but they dont give you the full power of a server. plus with a server, you can choose any language you want, you aren't locked into JavaScript like you are with an extension.

2h··on Ask HN: How do you choose your usernames?
for popular sites, any good name has long been taken. so I just find the shortest one possible. Have to be careful though. for example, with Hacker News, better to check:

https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=hello

than here:

https://news.ycombinator.com/login

because the second option, they will IP ban if you request more than once every 8 seconds. here are some open ones, I got tired of waiting so its not a full list:
