why are the tables SVG? that is horrible for accessibility.

Well, you'd be wrong then. If you went into a car dealership and asked for a new rearview mirror, and they gave you (and charged you for) a new car, you'd be rightly surprised.

Or better yet, if you ask apt get to update a package, you damn sure don't expect it to update itself.

Nothing else works like this, and shouldn't. It's just not what most people need or expect, or even want.

thanks. I am amazed at how GitHub can consistently make their product worse with every change.

2h··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
You are really showing your ignorance. Any cygwin packages marked mingw64 do not rely on the cygwin DLL for build time or run time.
2h··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
> AFAIK there is no native GCC compiler for Windows

might want to check your facts before spouting nonsense. there is, and has been for many, many years. more than one in fact:

Might want to tell that to the Rust programming language, Go, Zig and many others.

You think Windows dev shouldn't happen just because you don't like it?

2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
but I CAN argue its useful because I USE IT every day and can attest to its usefulness, even in the face of other options such as scroll wheel.

so you are free to argue that its not useful TO YOU, but you should qualify that, as you dont speak for everyone, or even a majority of users.

2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
There's a difference between good and good enough. Something doesn't need to be perfect to be useful or popular, only good enough.
2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
completely agree. the scrollbar has persisted for 40 years not because its useful, but because we just haven't figured out how to remove it yet.

thanks for your helpful comment.

2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
Windows 95 scrollbar looks the best of all of them IMO. it looks like it was professionally designed, compared with Windows 10 scrollbar, which looks like it was designed by an 8th grader.
2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
yes, because the word "natural" only has one meaning.
2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
a scrollbar when done right is the most natural form of moving down a page.

most scrollwheels have "notches", so if you move the wheel one "notch", its rarely the exact amount you wanted to move. the middle click is also not ideal, because it starts moving the page based on the current mouse position relative to the original position. so if you accidentally move too far away from the origin, the page shoots up or down.

with a scrollbar done right, you have fine grained, manual control of the movement of the page.

2h··on Evolution of the Scrollbar
you forgot Windows 11, the worst of them all.

1/3 the width of Windows 10, AND it auto hides. who in gods name could have possibly thought this was a good idea? what are you helping? width is RARELY the problem with desktop real estate, its always height. so you're freeing up space that doesn't need to be freed up. I get the thinking for a mobile device, but we are talking about Windows 11, its a desktop operating system. stop designing assuming everything needs to look exactly like an iPhone. for a desktop OS, its just objectively, scientifically worse:

2h··on This is valid Python syntax
If you're creating a new variable with allocated memory, your process is no longer "in place". Sorry I didn't graduate from the school of duckduckgo like you did, instead I studied the language specification.
2h··on This is valid Python syntax
> Do you know what it means?

yeah, it means no temporary variable.

2h··on HSTS preload adoption and challenges
> HSTS is the band-aid used to continue propping up our lack of ability to kill off HTTP

HTTP doesn't need to be killed, so your entire premise is flawed. HTTPS is a useful protocol in many situations, but its not, and should not be required for all connections. for many reasons, but one for example is that TLS connections are at least an order of magnitude slower than HTTP, and that wont ever change.

2h··on Play (1) Linux manual page

you seem to have an inability to use the phrase "to me". you dont dictate the patterns or usage of the population, only yourself.

2h··on This is valid Python syntax

that doesn't mean what you think it means.

2h··on Play (1) Linux manual page
> optional added effects

Right. so why are you pretending that this feature doesn't exist, or is not consequential? playback alone is not the same thing as playback with effects.

> for straight playback of audio data

who said that is the use case here? the original link is just to the man page itself. YOU DECIDED, that the only use case is straight playback with nothing else. that might apply TO YOU, but others might be keen on utilizing the other features, hence why they were added in the first place.

FYI the whole "lets type out some text" style is really, REALLY annoying. please just give the plain, non animated text on the screen. use whatever fonts or colors you want, BUT DON'T make the text type itself or jump around the screen.
