286c8cb04bda··on Criticism is a Two Way Street - Things you should know before criticising
> In Design school, we learned how to criticize without being jerks. We also learned to trust other people, and take criticism without being offended.

I want to design school also. One thing I noticed right away: We were _taught_ those things, but a lot of people didn't _learn_ them. Even near the end of the program, many of my classmates couldn't handle well (or usually just ignored) the feedback they got in group critiques.

Mostly, it was a problem that solved itself. The people who learned to give and take criticism improved a lot more than those that didn't.

286c8cb04bda··on The Internet Made Me Sad Today
> Advertising necessarily extracts value out of your attention, while simultaneously devaluing your browsing/watching/listening/driving/etc experience.

While it it usually, maybe even almost always, does, I don't think advertising is required to be a distraction.

If I'm searching for information on a product, say, a pair of headphones for my wife or a diet for myself, and I see ads for headphones or diet books, then that advertising can be very beneficial.

The problem comes when, like in the article at hand, there's a product or service, totally unrelated to what I'm searching for, that's being injected in my attention stream.

Arguably, Google's incredible financial success is founded on making that information infinitesimally more likely to be useful to the reader compared to, e.g., prime-time television.

286c8cb04bda··on Xcode, GCC, and Homebrew
> I wonder if there's a compelling reason for these add-on distros (Fink, Homebrew, Macports) to be strictly "build from source" with no option for binary package downloads.

For that to happen, someone has to take responsibility for creating, managing, and distributing those binary packages. That's much easier said than done.

So, the simple answer is that no one has, as of yet, volunteered to do the work.

Getting official residency in a city requires applying and fulfilling whatever (rather arbitrary) requirements the local government imposes.

It's in their best interests to be picky about who they let in, so the bar is set very high; Usually you need (1) a local employer to sponsor you, or (2) bribe one of the right office employees.

Both of those are beyond the means of most rural peasants. Those who have the money to afford city life but not the right connections to get the right papers will move in anyways, technically illegally.

As long as you don't cross the wrong person and get caught, you can often survive that way for quite a long time.

Disclaimer: My Mandarin is awful, and I'm almost certainly glossing over a lot of details, but that's a rough summary of what I've seen.

286c8cb04bda··on This Photograph Is Not Free
most wedding photographers explicitly own the rights to the photos they take of your wedding

Like most things, that's negotiable. When I went looking for a photographer for our wedding, one of the first questions I asked was "How much extra do you want for a copyright assignment?"

The additional charge varied from $0-500. The ladies we chose -- though primarily for other reasons -- were in $0 group.

I would argue that, at most programming jobs coding skill is less important than cultural fit, once you've passed the level of "reasonably competent developer."

Depends on what you mean by realistic. All of the examples I gave were things that have happened, or could plausibly happen.

You can never know what the company executives or managers might be getting up to, so -- as basic risk management -- you should prepare for catastrophic events.

286c8cb04bda··on A Step By Step Guide to Transfer Domains Out Of GoDaddy
First, manage the dns with a third party dns service.

This cannot be emphasized enough. Do not use your registrar's DNS. Do not use your registrar's hosting. Do not use your host's DNS.

The three elements -- domain registration, DNS, and web hosting -- should be segregated. That way, if you have problems with one, through chance, malice, or incompetence, you can exercise the other two items to work around the issue.

E.g.s:

If your web host is DDOSed, change the DNS entries to point to another host; minimizing downtime.

If your DNS servers are taken offline by legal action against the company that owns them, change the published servers at your registrar.

If your registrar goes bankrupt, your DNS and hosting will continue running smoothly while ICANN handles the domain management.

While you're at it, host your email somewhere different than your webhost. If you're account gets disabled because of a billing mistake, you want to get the email that tells you about it, right?

It's not even that expensive to implement these steps -- $25, maybe $50 per year. If you are at all serious about something on the Internet, spend the extra money!

Aye, there have been numerous investigations into it. Among linguists, it seems to be basically taken as a given that homophones, particularly when compared to less skilled native readers, are going to be easier for the non-native, because of acquisition methods. I should've prefaced that with the disclaimer that I am not a linguist, but I have worked in the past with linguists on language-related work, both in L1 (native) and L2 (non-native) contexts. Here are a couple of references I was given on this specific subject:

1. Van Orden, Guy C. (1987). A ROWS is a ROSE: Spelling, sound and reading.

2. Binder, K. & Borecki, C. (2007). The use of phonological, orthographic, and contextual information during reading.

3. Ota, M., Hartsuiker, R. J., & Haywood, S. L. (2010). Is a FAN always FUN?

Full texts for all of those are available online.

286c8cb04bda··on Gowalla Founders v. Gowalla Investors
It's an artifact of how native learners acquire language, compared to adult learners. Our native tongues are acquired rather ad hoc, and most people 'think' in speech. (As evidence, watch a slow reader. Often times they will sub-vocalize the text as they read. This is a side effect of their brain turning the text back into sound.)

So, to somebody who learned English as a child -- and is therefore aurally dominant -- the words "they're", "there", and "their" will all basically occupy an overlapping space in their mind. Somebody who learned English later will use textbooks to support the process; Things like contractions will be give special emphasis, etc.

Here's another option -- http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/ -- I'm not sure how it works. It claims to show the display when non-elevated, but require root send input.

286c8cb04bda··on EU Adopts Resolution Against US Domain Seizures
To summarize the linked thread: Some browsers, when you load an "https" page will complain if any of the elements on that page load over "http". For example, the story above loads some Twitter-y stuff from http://platform.twitter.com.

The technically correct fix is for the site owner to modify the page to load all these resources over https when the page is accessed over https. Until they do that, as a workaround, you could install an extension like the one mentioned by fl3tch[1] to do it in your browser.

N.B. That only works if the resource is available over https, many are not. In that case there is no fix.

286c8cb04bda··on LiveDrive terminates Backify contract, users don't have access to their backup
Excuse my presumption if you already know about this, but there are ways to make the I/O less aggressive for processes that hit the disk hard.

Since your graph header says 'linode', I'm assuming your servers all run Linux, and you should take a look at ionice[1]. It adjusts the IO priority of a process like 'nice' adjusts CPU priority. For example, prefixing your call like this: "ionice -c 3 tarsnap...." will give tarsnap the lowest priority access to the drive.
