27182818284··on Ask HN: What’s one thing you don’t regret buying?
Breaking the rules and posting more than one item.

My Nintendo Switch.

I hadn't bought any sort of console since...well never... the other closest console was an N64 from my parents. I had huge buyer's remorse walking out with it and a game for more than $300, but the value I've gotten out of it has far exceeded what I paid. I knew nothing about Super Mario Odyssey and the nostalgia struck me like lightning. I teared up during the city-level-whatever where you turn 2D and jump past Donkey-Kong-style barrels while the music is cheering you on.

My Late 2012 MacBook.

This has been, by far, the best laptop I've ever used, period. Its battery is awesome. I can do any task I need to with it. It connects to wifi instantly. It has a MagSafe connector that has saved me at least once. As far as I'm concerned, Apple could have just iterated on this design for life and I'd be happy. I think the 2015 model that pg mentions in this tweet are an upgraded form of this laptop: https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1157084442365534208

Kitchenaid Food Processor.

I've had this thing for 10+ years and it has been phenomenal for me. Only small problem is that I'm noticing discoloration in the handle after a decade.

I'm sure there are more, but those items come to the top of my head.

27182818284··on Show HN: I built a free forms service for static websites
I didn't quite have this harsh of an outlook, but I also immediately scrolled to see what "paid" versions there were as a "seriousness" check. That's interesting.
27182818284··on I think my BBQ just offered to be my default browser?
I run stock Android on a Pixel phone and the default people in my share area are people I haven't communicated with in years. I hate it so much. They're in my contacts in case they ever reach out, but by no means is it the last people I texted or anything close to that.
27182818284··on Signal PINs
If you lose your phone and pin, how much does someone have to bruteforce to recover your messages on a new phone?

Surely they'd have to do more work than iterate through a possibly as small as 4-digit key?

27182818284··on Having trouble with the IRS site? Try all caps
For what it is worth, errors are being hammered out. The first few times I received "unspecified error" then tried it again one day and it worked like a charm.
27182818284··on Ask HN: I'm a software engineer going blind, how should I prepare?
Similar experience for when I taught myself the Dvorak layout years ago. My fingers learned the common motion for whole words first. Actually, I'm not sure I could draw the layout of the qwerty keyboard I'm typing on right now from memory either.
27182818284··on The governor of NJ went live on TV to request COBOL programmers
In the YouTube clip, the URL http://covid19.nj.gov/ but there is still as of yet no mention of COBOL as far as I can see.

If anyone has the actual links that include the job description, etc, I'd be curious.

Thanks for reminding me about this. One thing I've established with my siblings was that none of us should transfer any money via a service like Paypal, Venmo, etc to each other without an explicit casual phone call first. It can't just be a text or a phone call asking for money, you have to have a casual conversation first. How is work? How's blah blah, what are you getting for dinner tonight, etc. For the case of elderly parents, I'm lucky that they would immediately hand that off as busy-work to siblings. Like they would never go to Western Union, they would call a child and say hey your sibling requested such and such can you go do that which would then raise all of the alarms.
27182818284··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
>React has essentially won the mindshare

Casually job hunting right now, and it is insane how much React has won to me. Like I knew it was popular, but it seems like it has an outright monopoly with the remaining 5% of market share being split among all the other alternatives.

I don't know what the actual market shares are, but when looking at open positions around the US from coast to coast, it seems to have won.

There was a similar app for Facebook too where the app remained quiet unless you were both interested in having sex with each other and then it would send notifications to the two people.
27182818284··on Is College Still Worth It? The New Calculus of Falling Returns [pdf]
It deeply depends on your field.

I saw a developer position recently that required at least a four-year degree and it genuinely surprised me because of how infrequent that requirement appears on developer job postings. The vast majority of posts I see are "four years degree or equivalent experience"

I've worked in software shops before where less than half of the staff had a 4-year degree completed—but it is noteworthy y that everyone had at least some college.

>and my own employer when applying for advancement

That I have seen before, but in higher-ed, where it is kind of a given as it is sort of an eating-your-own-dog-food requirement. If your top employees don't have a degree, and you sell degrees, it can tarnish your appearance.

27182818284··on ‘The Far Side’ Is Back, Sort Of
That's fair. I'll concede on that. You're right.
27182818284··on ‘The Far Side’ Is Back, Sort Of
From what I've read he knew he had permission from the record label, and knew he didn't have Coolio's blessing. I wasn't there, but it seems unlikely that if he immediately had turned around like "wow I didn't know" the so-called beef wouldn't have lasted years until they made nice.

From: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/bp/coolio-did-not-want-w...

>Coolio said when Weird Al initially requested to remake the song, he said, "No," but later realized that, due to the fair use copyright laws, he could not stop the production.

>Coolio later reconsidered Weird Al's proposal. "I sat down, and I really thought it out," he told the students at IPR. "I was like, 'Wait a minute.' I was like, 'Coolio, who the f—k do you think you are? He did Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson didn't get mad.'"

27182818284··on ‘The Far Side’ Is Back, Sort Of
For what it is worth, Yankovick has done the opposite of your comment at least once.

Yankovic specifically got legal permission for his song Amish Paradise but not what was arguably "right" meaning permission from the artist Coolio who said no. Yankovic did it anyway.

Years later, they are reportedly "cool" now according to Yankovic: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1h7afc/i_am_weird_al_...

27182818284··on Frail Older Patients Struggle After Even Minor Operations
Same. I heard something from an RN like "If you break a bone after this age, you have 6 months to live"

Every. Single. Time. since then this has been true in my anecdotal experience. Sometimes I've really regretted mentioning it because I've mentioned it to coworkers sort of casually and then, sure enough, their parent was dead within 6 months of the break.

After the first few came true I said it more seriously like, "Listen, you need to prepare for their death..."

27182818284··on A news helicopter was struck by a suspected drone, causing substantial damage
Machinery inside. They simulated a bird strike too and found that to damage the internals less, so they suggested that future drone development might take that in to account and crumple closer to a bird strike.
27182818284··on A news helicopter was struck by a suspected drone, causing substantial damage
The closest example that comes to mind was done by the University of Dayton

https://giphy.com/gifs/48LkLrgh9AKmcFUVxe/html5

That simulated an aircraft's wing vs a drone at 238 mph. I was actually kinda surprised by the amount of damage inflicted.

27182818284··on Medieval Price List
Ignorant question: What is a pound in this case? It isn't actually a pound of silver in weight, right? I get really confused with modern British currency and what silver the system was based on in the past, etc.

If I see that something is 20 shillings, does that mean it cost me a pound of silver by weight out of the ground to buy?

27182818284··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
>While I am personally an organ donor, I don't believe the state should be the defacto owner of my organs post mortem.

Ahh you can't leave us hanging with just that. Can you elaborate more?

27182818284··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
I hope this thread repeats each Thanksgiving on HN.
27182818284··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
That's amazing! I'm super happy for you and your family!

Your comment gave me pause because it reminded me that it is opt-in not opt-out. It is an election cycle, I wonder if we could convince one of the candidates to switch us to opt-out rather than opt-in for organ donation.

27182818284··on Before you call an Uber or a Lyft, you'll want to know about 'Vomit Fraud'
I've made it a point to ask my drivers (usually Lyft) in every ride, "How's driving going?" and "Been driving for long?"

As a result, I've heard drivers lament about actual vomit and other weird problems. From my (much) experience as a rider, all of the vomit stories have been very legit sounding. (Of course, if there were fraud they probably wouldn't mention it)

Surprisingly, one of the things mentioned most often is passengers still trying to drink in the car. Like they will open new containers discreetly or conspicuously, at times even against warnings from the driver.

In one story, they charged the passenger for cleaning not because they threw up, but instead because the opened beer cases they brought in to the car had leaking beer cans so now the whole car smells like beer.

27182818284··on Ask HN: Is social media a broken idea or simply inefficient for our needs?
I find that it was not inefficient, but too efficient. Like our brains weren't ready for that dopamine hit of a Like, Retweet, and other instant feedback of validation.

Same thing with witch hunts online. Don't forget the famous "We did, Reddit!" where people were able to come together as a mob in an easier fashion than ever before (round the clock, and not defined by geographical borders)

We weren't, and still aren't, ready for it so we're struggling. This isn't even really social media specific, but social media's adoption was faster than any other technology I can think of in history. Like dwarfs phone, radio, and TV adoption.

27182818284··on Humans will not 'migrate' to other planets, Nobel winner says
It is a false choice that we have to protect this planet OR work on the technology to move elsewhere. It doesn't have to be either or. In fact, right now even it isn't. We're putting effort toward both, but the amount spent on moving to another planet is so little it is practically rounding error, so really we are putting effort toward preserving this planet and not moving when looked at through that lens.

There are, however, problems outside of human-made pollution that threaten the planet. Asteroids aren't fiction. The one that was famously recorded in Russia a few years ago shattered windows, but if, by chance, had impacted at a different angle we would have been looking at a crater in the ground and we'd probably be discussing increases to the asteroid defense budget on Hacker News today still. Historically we can see the effects of the asteroid that caused the K-T mass extinction in a variety of places. Reducing, reusing, and recycling won't help us in the cases of stellar-based threats like large asteroids, a field of millions of smaller asteroids that gets captured by earth, or some, as of yet, barely understood phenomenon like a hypothetical traveling black hole or radiation burst of some kind.

27182818284··on Amazon offered ‘Amazon’s Choice’ to vendors who bought ads and lowered prices
hahaha, oh wow.

I have been completely incorrect on my interpretation of Amazon's Choice.

Historically when I searched for something, I've often find a product in the results with 80-90% of the features I'm looking for. That result was often listed as Amazon's Choice, so I built it up in my mind to mean "users of Amazon mostly get this one" I was fine with that because, like I said, it usually wouldn't fit the criteria exactly, but it was 80-90% of the way there so it made sense to me that it would be the choice of most people, but not all.

27182818284··on Anyone else thinks that Whiteboard interview is just covered ageism?
Oh cool, thanks for the link! I should have thought to look at SO, as I generally read those survey results, but it didn't occur to me to look for this question there. 28% is a bit higher than I would have guessed even to that answer.
27182818284··on Anyone else thinks that Whiteboard interview is just covered ageism?
The whiteboard threads are always interesting to me because with more than ten years experience in software development in enterprise and startups now, I've never had to do a whiteboard interview.

Are they common outside the big six names? I.e., outside of Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Netflix? I wonder what the actual percentage of "Needed to pass a whiteboard-based Q&A to get a salaried position" is.

From my viewpoint, having never run in to them, they seem like something that was much more popular in the past, but now rarely used or only used at the aforementioned big six companies.

27182818284··on Amazon wants to control third-party sellers’ product pricing
I returned to ebay after years of absence when I wanted a replacement wallet just like one I had 10 years ago. I found it for cheap, it shipped, it was brand new in its packaging. I couldn't have been happier.

Since then I've really re-awoken to ebay and tried to get in the habit of looking there and not just on Amazon. So I would second the parent's comment. I could even see there being an ebay revival.
