26fingies··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
Probably depends on what the code is and how material it is to AT&T’s business and what agreements are in place. IANAL. Youre not gonna get sued for routine stuff.
26fingies··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
No I don’t think that’s what happened at all. Also memorizing code and rewriting it is very much IP theft.
26fingies··on The 'Georgists' Are Out and they want to tax your land
Why does this author insist on calling all of these people who think LVT is a good idea Georgists? It’s kind of an annoying angle for the article.
26fingies··on Git rebase, what can go wrong
You can usually see that in whatever tool youre using anyway. Blame -> find the PR -> see commit history.
26fingies··on U.N. votes to end US embargo on Cuba; US and Israel oppose
So your hypothesis is that a country under decades of embargo would somehow do worse or at least no better after that embargo is lifted?
26fingies··on Drugmakers are set to pay 23andMe to access consumer DNA
You know what would be fun? If we could see where all of our ancestors were from…

- Police arrest my cousin for getting a paper cut during a home robbery

- Hackers sell my DNA on the internet

- Drugmakers make new and exciting opiates that are especially addictive for me alone

26fingies··on Laid-off masses have a message for Zuckerberg, Benioff: We'll never come back
Pretty damning view of the shape of society if we think this is accurate.
26fingies··on The negative impact of mobile-first web design on desktop
given how terrible the mobile web is i refuse to believe anyone is actually doing mobile-first web design
26fingies··on Embeddings: What they are and why they matter
Admittedly i more or less skimmed and plan on going back over this tomorrow, but I dont see how these vectors are actually created. I get that I could use your llm tool or whatever, but that seems unsatisfactory. How is the sausage made? (or if thats explained can someone point me at the right place to look?)
26fingies··on Nokia to cut up to 14,000 jobs as US demand shrinks, growth uncertain
You know you can respond without being a jerk right?
26fingies··on Two Kinds of Techno-Optimism
Unfortunately for Gary, the capitalist regime humanity currently finds itself under ensures that Andreesen is the more correct one. The things that are not profitable do not matter.
26fingies··on Supernova in 1006
From what I've seen out on the internet Betelgeuse is the most likely next relatively close supernova. There were some recent predictions this would be in 10's of years, I don't know how true that is.
26fingies··on MatX: Efficient C++17 GPU numerical computing library with Python-like syntax
very nice but i assume it’s going to be limited to cuda as a backend because nvidia
26fingies··on Microsoft CEO testifies that Google’s power in search is ubiquitous
Does microsoft testifying preclude any of those companies from testifying?
26fingies··on Kagi is 80% faster and 70% less carbon intensive than Google
because it’s a priority until something shiny that sounds like easy money comes along
26fingies··on How China's “debt traps” work
i was gonna say - a lot of places you can put a bunch of cash down for an apartment that only exists as a picture on a sign somewhere.
26fingies··on Training repayment agreements trap employees in their jobs
then maybe you should stop training people; or think for a second that if you are the one training everybody you can take a little less profit in exchange for starving your competitors of trained employees. Besides it works itself out anyway if they stay on longer even though it takes you longer to recoup your training costs. tldr this training argument is full of contradictions
26fingies··on Every single Onewheel is being recalled after four deaths
> The average bike commuter probably has a much higher chance of injury in a solo crash than someone who's skated for decades on a onewheel

what of the average onewheel commuter?

26fingies··on Training repayment agreements trap employees in their jobs
is it though? you’re training people so they can be competent at the job they’ve been hired for and then they what take their skills and go do the same thing at a different company? Why would they do that when they already have a job at your company? There must be a reason for them to be leaving in sufficient numbers to cause you problems…
26fingies··on Meta in Myanmar
genocide in this case
26fingies··on Training repayment agreements trap employees in their jobs
well then stop being a shitty employer if you have a problem with people moving on after you train them up. i thought we were into the free market here.
26fingies··on Fake News Detectors Are Biased Against Texts Generated by Large Language Models
How is the LLM supposed to determine the truthfulness of a thing?
26fingies··on Meta in Myanmar
> Meta’s corporate culture is single mindedly focused on engagement. They don’t care about side effects or other ambitions. They don’t have a corporate structure that encourages anything else that may be beneficial to their consumer base.

I dont really see how that is unique to Meta though. The mandate of any corporation is essentially sociopathic. Unless the leaders really go out of their way for the company to behave in ways that are perhaps good for people (customer or not) and bad for the company the company is just going to be as selfish as it can be.

26fingies··on Meta in Myanmar
Sure you can replace Facebook with whatever you want and come up with some scenario that will lead to a genocide. I bet this genocide would happen at some point regardless of facebooks involvement. There have been plenty before it. But the fact of the matter here is that in this case it _was_ facebook.
26fingies··on Meta in Myanmar
The ideas people are exposed to can shape their own ideas. That’s how ideas work.
26fingies··on 41% of French pop in favour of limiting everyone to 4 flights for entire life
Yea but airlines are government subsidized and a terrible way to shelter money, whereas commercial real estate was a great way to shelter money until the plebs decided they wanted more autonomy over their lives. I hope you understand why we have chosen to prioritize things this way.
26fingies··on 41% of French pop in favour of limiting everyone to 4 flights for entire life
this is hacker news we dont do introspection here
26fingies··on Leaked screenshot shows Amazon now tracking individual employee attendance
Does presenting evidence count as manipulating a jury?
26fingies··on The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old
My first thought when I saw this was that it would be some matrix rip. Turns out I wasnt far off lol.
26fingies··on Working remotely can more than halve an office employee’s carbon footprint
You have to remember that companies are run by people and people have incentives that are not always aligned with the company.

For example if you are a very wealthy person who runs a large company you need to put that money somewhere and that somewhere may be real estate. In fact it may be real estate in a city such as San Francisco. Prior to covid and work from home that was a very good place to keep your money, but today it’s a lot less good. Companies themselves may have significant real estate investments as well. There are more inputs to this than productivity (and real estate for that matter but it was the first example that came to mind)
