2143··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
ThinkPad.
2143··on Why do arrays start at 0?
Yes, where I'm at — large country in Asia — we count floors starting from 0 (aka G for Ground).

Confused me when I visited USA.

2143··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
In my country manual used to be the default until as recently as 5 years ago; now automakers as well as customers are shifting towards automatics in a big way. They're just super convenient in crowded cities.

Whether I want a manual or an automatic depends on the nature of the car. If it's a small fun-to-drive car — like a Mini Cooper, BMW 3 series, porsches etc — I prefer manual.

But if it's a large luxury sedan or large SUV, then I will opt for automatic.

Also, one can potentially do more with a given amount of dollars in India than in the US, because things tend to be cheaper in India.

But, with the amount of money involved in this particular case I don't think any of that matters.

> The only reason the standard of living in the US is higher than anywhere else in the world

That's not true. Places like Sweden, Luxembourg, Switzerland etc have higher standards of living.

US isn't by no means bad when it comes to standard of living, but it definitely isn't "higher than anywhere else in the world".

Because people hire the cheapest people they can get.

The highly skilled people likely wouldn't even be on the market for hire because they already have well-paying jobs.

2143··on Mercedes and Ferrari’s edge in the electric car age: high-end axial motors
100% agree.

Both companies are interesting in their own way, but they aren't exactly comparable in my opinion.

Trivia: Christian von Koenigsegg's daily driver is a Tesla Model S :) [1]

2143··on Ask HN: Anyone else feel trapped in FANG? How did you get out?
> FAANG or should I say MAMAA companies have an enormous amount of cash compared to everyone else on earth

I wouldn't be so sure. There's plenty of conglomerates around the world with huge piles of cash.

2143··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
With AWS the problems I heard was your bill getting really really high unexpectedly.
2143··on The Google Pixel 6a highlights the problem with the U.S. phone market
Anecdotal: I'm not a power-user, but I never really had bluetooth problems (latency, connectivity etc) between my phone and bluetooth devices.

I do however have the rare bluetooth connectivity problems with laptops, even the newer ones, but that could be a problem with Linux.

Also, I've accidentally damaged my wired headphones before by walking around and the wires getting hooked onto something.

Besides, I find it convenient to keep my phone in one place and walk around while making phone calls, or listening to stuff. Like, cleaning my house while listening to stuff.

I agree that it would be better to have both BT and a headphone jack.

I went from "they had it in the 30s?" to "omg 1950 was 70 years ago!"
2143··on It wasn't for nothing
Not OP.

• 68% of the total landmass is in the northern hemisphere

• 87% of the total population is in the northern hemisphere

Not surprisingly, the really chaotic wars and such things seem to be happening in the north.

So objectively speaking the southern hemisphere might not be so bad :)

Of course, I have absolutely no doubt Norway and surrounding countries are all generally peaceful good developed places.

2143··on Ask HN: Mind Game
I don't know if this counts, but how about a Rubik's cube?

Or just, read books.

2143··on Ask HN: Must have tools for a new MacBook
oh-my-zsh

2143··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
> Chrome now hides the bookmark bar by default

I haven't used Chrome in a while, but doesn't the bar show up when you open a new tab (and hides when some site is on the tab)? I thought it was a nice intuitive behavior for most people.

> i want to be able to quickly load common favorite news sites & blogs.

> or load a window with all my productivity SaaS sites

You can move those sites into a folder, and one-click-open that folder.

2143··on Accounting For Developers, Part I
> Sometimes non-accounting people get hung-up on the words "debit" and "credit"

In took an undergrad accounting class centuries ago. I'm a CS major, but we were required to take a beginner class in accounting, which in retrospect was a good thing.

In the accounting class (the double-entry bookkeeping part), for any transaction two accounts were involved:

- Money was "debited" into one account. ie., money came into that amount (balance increased)

- That same money was "credited" from another account. ie., money left that account (balance decreased).

However, my bank seems to use the terminology in the opposite way. If $10 comes into my bank account, I get a message saying "$10 was credited into your account".

Likewise, if I send money elsewhere the message would be "$10 was debited from my account".

I'm told that if you look at it in some convoluted way the meaning of "debit" and "credit" is infact the same, even though at first glance is seems to be the opposite.

Now that I think about it, there was something to do with "asset", "liability" etc, on which the meaning of the terms depended on.

2143··on Ask HN: Have a code performance-oriented interview Monday. Tips?
I don't have advice, but once the interview is over come back here to tell us how it went so that it'll be useful to the next person.

Good luck!

2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
You didn't have to. It would have been good to hear your perspective as well.
2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
> Gasoline is currently $3.58/gallon here, and diesel almost $5/gallon

Why is diesel more expensive? Don't you get diesel earlier in the refinement process?

2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
Yeah that's inefficient.

My guess is that the rule supposes that bigger trucks carrying freight is more efficient (than many smaller trucks).

2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
> My modern diesel

Thank goodness you drive a diesel.

Can somebody explain why people tend to prefer petrol engines for trucks America?

Doesn't diesels haul better, because of all that torque from a lower RPM, from a smaller engine?

2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
It's not black-and-white.

Most SUVs around there aren't based on trucks or minivans.

Over the last decade or so people are increasingly preferring SUVs.

Most of these are soft-roaders, and not trucks or minivans. They aren't very capable off the road. Some of them aren't even 4/AWD, and most are monocoques and not body-on-frames.

2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
And ironically, USA does not get the Toyota Hilux, which the rest of the world loves.
2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
I think it's something like, a plane carrying 400 people over a long distance is more efficient than if those 400 people drove that same distance in 400 cars. Something like that.

(I don't know which one pollutes more).

2143··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
It's your tiny car a Honda Jazz? (I think it's called "Fit" in the US)
2143··on Ask HN: Amazon lying about shipping dates?
Did that happen just once, or does it happen all the time?

If it happened just once, it's probably just some warehouse/inventory updation delay or something.

In my country (not USA) Amazon is very punctual, and sometimes I even get things a day early.

2143··on Ask HN: What Is the Lisp “Enlightment”?
I don't get it. Care to explain?
2143··on The AK-47
I have never touched a gun. And I don't intend to.

(I'm from a country where people don't have access to guns. And most animals here are considered exotic and shooting them is illegal.)

Nevertheless, I can appreciate a piece of good engineering, even if a little dark.

I also like other well engineered simple long-lasting stuff. Things like the Toyota Land Cruiser, BMW B57 & B58 straight-6 engines, and ThinkPad laptops come to mind.

People sometimes even say "ThinkPad is the AK-47 of laptops".

What are some other well engineered long-lasting products?

---

Update: explained why I haven't touched guns. Thanks for the downvotes ;)

2143··on Counterfeits, fraud, and theft: Why Silca changed its return policy
What if somebody just moves into a new country and they don't know anybody to vouch for them?

I once moved to USA as a student and didn't know anybody for a while. And being the introvert that I am, I had trouble making friends.

(Off topic: years later I returned "back to your (my) country”)

2143··on Counterfeits, fraud, and theft: Why Silca changed its return policy
On the one hand your country is so great they don't force small businesses to run their business according to lawmakers' preferences for return policies.

On the other hand your own citizens scam the businesses over there.

You're in between a rock and a hard place.

As long as people have the attitude to commit fraud, they would. Maybe it's time to take a few steps back and try to understand why people do this?
