1stop··on Likely hack of U.S. banking regulator FDIC by China covered up: probe
Or the realisation that WE are that corrupt and inept bunch. It's not like government workers are a 'special elite' class...
1stop··on Zillow CEO Overpaid for His Los Angeles Home, According to Zillow
Information asymmetry sometimes defines an entire market (like salaries!). When you take away that asymmetry you change the market.

I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, but I assume that is what the GP is getting at.

1stop··on How America Could Go Dark
Right but the same logic applies. Rather than 1 single point of failure you now have millions of mini power generators. The impact of one going is significantly less.
1stop··on Is your personality fixed, or can you change who you are?
This is similar to the alternate reality counter proof: If alternate realities exist, and we can get to them from this reality, then they are no longer an alternate reality. If we cannot get to them, then they cannot "exist" as our reality is a prerequisite for existence.

You can say the same for a changed personality :p

1stop··on What Does It Mean to Be Poor in Germany?
There is vastly more generic similarity than difference... racism is never about genetics, it's always about shared (or not) culture.

The genetic arguement is completely bogus, shouldn't you be removing all the dogs first before you start splitting difference between humans?

1stop··on What Does It Mean to Be Poor in Germany?
I'm confused about your reference to Australian Aboriginals. The majority of them were decimated by disease and out right violent attack from whites... how are either of those scenarios relevant here?
1stop··on Scaling Mercurial at Facebook
I know, do you reckon Facebook engineers are sitting awkwardly in a meeting with this comment page up:

"Why didn't we think of this!!!?"

1stop··on Growing Rift Between Valve and Oculus
The video you linked has competing companies all taking about how good it will be to integrate (valve included)... you are right there is no line like "it will be an open platform" but they heavily imply it will be an open platform
1stop··on Please don't send me smart replies
Are you shallow? Or is Google's "Intelligence" deep?
1stop··on Please don't send me smart replies
But isn't that a pretty common use case?

Do people on chat with their nearest and dearest? Or do they chat with a mix of people who they may like or even dislike.

1stop··on Please don't send me smart replies
I chat and am "friends" with a whole bunch of people don't really care about. If Google cab automate the pretense of a friendship then great, I can spend more time on my actual friends.
1stop··on Please don't send me smart replies
Should we now have an existential crisis when the smart reply is exactly what we were going to say? Should we type it anyway just to teach the machine it was right?

Should we save our outrage for something more then a feature in an announced chat app?

1stop··on If you care about privacy, you should not use Google Allo
But you are conflating two things. The data companies collect on me without me knowing is not related to the data that can be googled on me. Because I know about the later and have a level of control over it.

... what does your point have to do with allo ?

1stop··on If you care about privacy, you should not use Google Allo
... but there is no downside for the vast majority... so, winning?
1stop··on Senate Passes Bill Exposing Saudi Arabia to 9/11 Legal Claims
You are saying, from your citation. That the fire department decided to collapse a building with their own personell inside, and without telling any of the surrounding personell... logic for the win!

Could you answer my other questions, hope to setup a controlled demo so quickly without anyone noticing the amount of people and explosives required... ?

We are just trolling each other at this point right?

1stop··on If you care about privacy, you should not use Google Allo
That's a strange arguement.

That's like saying it's not hysterical to say everyone needs Kevlar, because try being a soldier without Kevlar!?

It makes no sense.

People who need to hide things have encrypted options. People who don't, also have options. I don't see the problem.

1stop··on Senate Passes Bill Exposing Saudi Arabia to 9/11 Legal Claims
Could you at least cite the retracted statement? Public knowledge means "really easy to cite"

How was it pulled? How did they set up a controlled demolition of a burning building? Why would they not tell emergency services they were going to do that?

Would emergency services not have noticed demo experts with piles and piles of explosives entering and exiting the building?

Seriously, an "inquisitive mind" would ask these sort of questions. Go down to one of the on duty fire houses and ask your questions there...

1stop··on Why You Can’t Lose Weight on a Diet
I mean this with full empathy for your situation.

It really is that simple.

Several months of eating fewer than 800 calories and not going to the gym at all would result in massive weight loss... except for a very tiny person.

It's not sanctimonious.

1stop··on The driverless truck is coming, and it’s going to automate millions of jobs
But it's still simple math. More weight, be more aggressive with brakes.

If human truck drivers can do it, then a computer truck with a 360 model of the environment around it can do it more efficiently right.

I don't understand the problem here really. Computers are way better at logical computation than humans and that's all we require here.

1stop··on Nazi Propaganda: Out of the Cage
Australia is an American puppet state. Most of Europe is as well. Recall what happened to European airspace when they thought snowden was in the air?

I think people in China hold very different values to Americans and for the most part they don't mind their government, as shown by its continued existence.

India holds different values again... I'm not particularly familiar with so I won't comment.

1stop··on Nazi Propaganda: Out of the Cage
But that's your ideology. Isn't it? I tend to agree with you, but I understand there are places in the world they do not like this.

Freedom of expression is not a universal value it's just an "I'm American, or an American puppet state" value.

1stop··on Edward Snowden: The Internet Is Broken
You can't E2E with a web app?
1stop··on Smart Kids Should Skip High School
I see, so we have an arbitrary law around an amoral action, so it's not relevant to the discussion of amoral actions?

I don't follow the logic.

1stop··on The Black Death: The Greatest Catastrophe (2005)
Not true at all. An out group hits me, innately I want to hit back. An out group shows me empathy innately I show it back. You would have to learn otherwise.

The in-group out-group is some higher part of the brain that rationalised our values.

1stop··on The Black Death: The Greatest Catastrophe (2005)
It's actually easier (and more intuitive) to explain it in terms of reciprocity. We have an innate understanding of it.
1stop··on Smart Kids Should Skip High School
Research shows the opposite. Mixing ability levels increases the median mark. The point of public funded education is not to produce a minority of geniuses but a majority of smart people.
1stop··on Smart Kids Should Skip High School
This is like asking "what do I get out of not robbing the old lady in the park"... You don't get anything for not doing that, and you miss out on cashing in her pension cheque.
1stop··on Smart Kids Should Skip High School
Is this like saying "Rich people should hoard their wealth"?

There is something to be said for Smart kids being at school both receive and PROVIDE benefit to/from the other students.

But I guess, who cares about dumb kids, who had less opportunity than the smart ones? They'll get a better draw next life!

1stop··on Namecheap live chat social engineering leads to loss of 2 VPS
Victim blaming is used to vindicate a perpetrator of a wrong doing. That isn't being done here, nor in the mugging example.

You can say a victim is stupid without giving any vindication to the person in the wrong.

Namecheap are saying "be responsible for your backups, but yeah we screwed up on our security policy" - They are seperate things, that the victim here has conflated, but are seperate problems (in regards to namecheaps offering).

1stop··on The Weird Redemption of SF’s Most Reviled Tech Bro
It's not that we expect more, it's that we have more empathy for those without. With good reason, hardship is easier for those with means to fix it.
