1cvmask··on European alternatives for digital products
These listings seem limited from a cursory glance. And what does European mean?

If a German company hosts everything on Google or AWS is it still considered European? Or if a Romanian company moves HQ to New York and still does development mainly in Romania like UI Path?

Or what if you are an American company with all or most of your dev team in say Sweden or Hungary? Does that make you European?

And if you are say a non-European company but meet all the European data protection and compliance requirements and the European counterparts do not?

1cvmask··on When Hypocrites Rule Washington and Washington Is Exempt from the World’s Rules
And the public does not hold the politicians behind these constant forever wars accountable at all. Right now we are arming terrorists in Ethiopia, Africa, to create a civil war. Not even covered by the mainstream press. The last paragraph is great:

It is evident that Washington will never hold itself accountable. Neither, it seems, will the US media. Which, unfortunately, appears to leave the job to armed foreigners, including, unfortunately, the Russians and Chinese. That isn’t in America’s interest, but then, promiscuous war-making by Washington isn’t in America’s interest either. Ultimately the American people need to ask questions of their officials that no one else will. Otherwise, peace may forever remain out of reach.

Injecting malware into ads is as old as ad networks. There are even ad networks that hijack the ads of other networks and replace the original ads with their own.

1cvmask··on Ask HN: What would you do if you were president?
Abolish civil forfeiture. Limit qualified immunity for all government employees especially police and prosecutors. Pardon Snowden, Assange and Daniel Hale etc. Remove the absurd restrictions of the Treasury regarding KYC and AML thus lowering the costs for the poor to be banked. Cut back on the sprawl of over 800 foreign military bases. Stop economic sanctions as a weapon against poor countries. Stop meddling in other countries affairs. Strengthen following the UN and its laws. Eliminate illegal activities like the surveillance state. Save money from the 1.25 trillion national security budget and spend it on Medicare for all. Remove a lot of the rules and regulations and onerous compliance on startups and smaller companies. Change federal procurement rules that currently favor the large elite companies and the entrenched. Limit the effects of bribery, corruption and "lobbying" in setting government rules and regulations.
1cvmask··on Harvard won’t require SAT or ACT through 2026 as test-optional push grows
Harvard has never been a meritocracy and never will be. It is an elite establishment and will protect the elites of the world and offer them safe harbor for 4 years. It is good of them that they removed the facade of requiring exams at all since they can now be open about choosing the future elites from the children of the current elites.

The diversity trope is just pure performative art to justify more rich elite whites. They do this discrimination while having a massive endowment and still receiving huge taxpayer handouts.

1cvmask··on Worker pay isn’t keeping up with inflation
Housing supply (NIMBYism by landlords) has not kept up with population growth and immigration in most dense cities. There is also the massive increase in multiple houses bought and left empty by the rich which are ghost houses. Healthcare will go up because that is regulated by politicians who do their best to raise prices for vested interests. The 2003 law passed by Republicans to prevent the government from even negotiating drug prices with Big Pharma is an example. You can’t even do parallel imports of drugs from say Europe. The number of doctors is restricted by the AMA and they even do the guidelines on how well they should be compensated. Educatlon is a third party payment “scam” where there is no incentive to restrict your costs, and there is every incentive to spend money on non-academic activities like massively bloated football programs and bureaucracies.

We reap what we sow.

I am in fact happy they killed this before it went public. At least people did not invest in learning a new service and then have to deal with migrating it elsewhere.

The region has been burnt by politicians’ fading interest before. While Taiwan was shoring up the semiconductor sector with nine-figure subsidies at the turn of the century, European support for the capital intensive industry remained modest.

As recently as 2009, Dresden-based memory chipmaker Qimonda — one of the world’s largest — filed for bankruptcy after struggling to compete with Asian rivals despite appeals to the European Commission for support.

“Qimonda wasn’t saved, [carmaker] Opel was saved,” said Frank Bösenberg, managing director of Silicon Saxony’s representative body, which lobbies on behalf of 370 institutions. “Whose belts are standing still right now due to the lack of semiconductors?” he said, referring to Opel’s production lines.

1cvmask··on Nvidia will lose its grip on the AI industry
I don't see gross incompetence in their management like there was at Intel. So they may lose some market share in the future due to competitive forces but not enough to undercut them. The only unknown is if a Chinese or Korean (Samsung) competitor emerges in the next 10 years.

1cvmask··on Russian court accidentally confirmed Russian military presence in Ukraine
Apparently we can now arm and train these neo-Nazis according to the Wikipedia link:

In March 2015 Interior Minister Arsen Avakov announced that the Azov Regiment would be among the first units to be trained by United States Army troops in their Operation Fearless Guardian training mission.[46][47] US training however was withdrawn on 12 June 2015, as US House of Representatives passed an amendment blocking any aid (including arms and training) to the battalion due to its neo-Nazi background.[48] After the vote Congressman John Conyers thanked the House saying

I am grateful that the House of Representatives unanimously passed my amendments last night to ensure that our military does not train members of the repulsive neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, along with my measures to keep the dangerous and easily trafficked MANPADs out of these unstable regions.[47]

However, the amendment has since been removed as of November 2016.

1cvmask··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
It seems that Google Glass was not ready for prime time when it launched. Now, as in the next couple of years, seems to be the inflection point for the whole ecosystem. Apple is also supposedly preparing for a launch of their glasses.

I see tremendous use cases for these glasses in all sorts of workplaces from surgery, dermatology, hair stylists, factory assembly, horticulturists to potentially nefarious uses cases like the police and military.

Welcome to the brave new meta world.

1cvmask··on Wuhan lab leak 'now the most likely origin of Covid'
It was an amusing period when all the mainstream media outlets attacked such discussions as racist and xenophobic and censorship platforms like YouTube banned it.

And then somehow noted scientists like Jon Stewart allowed for the discussion to be allowed.

This dilly dallying on the origins of Covid only shows the importance of free speech and the dangers of the mainstream media, Big Tech and their lies. Whether the real source is the Wuhan Lab is no longer relevant. Trying to force the discussion genie into the censorship bottle is the real story.

Unfortunately now they are pushing the Wuhan lab leak theory for different and nefarious purposes instead of the furtherment of medical research.

1cvmask··on US Navy fires laser weapon in Mideast amid drone boat threat
It's important that the Navy maintains self-defense capabilities in the Mideast even against commercial flights. We even gave the commander of USS Vincennes William Rogers III a Legion of Merit decoration for his courageous act of shooting down a commercial plane and killing 290 civilians:
