1986··on Our framework for reporting model misalignment
I'm not Zitron pilled, but hasn't OpenAI raised more funding than in the history of the valley?
1986··on P(doom)
He really elides his thoughts on the "RSI business", wish he could have gone into a bit more depth there. Good post, though.
1986··on 200 Milliseconds
IIRC TurboTax has a bunch of loaders / spinners like this, similar idea.
1986··on New York's small business owners rejoice as Mamdani cuts red tape
> General NIMBY-ism

Mamdani explicitly campaigned on building more, especially housing, so not sure where you got that idea. NIMBYs show up at community board meetings, sure, but your post makes it sound like that's somehow the mayor's fault?

I'm also not sure if you're a New Yorker or not but the NYC EDC remit is a hell of a lot more than just "encourage big business". They run the ferry, for example, and other infrastructure projects

1986··on StubHub, CEO hit with ‘deceptive practices’ class action over mass scalping
In the vast majority of venues, ID checks are happening anyway to verify eligibility for drinking.

1986··on Rent collections are down in New York
They're being evicted from their home, but from the landlord's property. It would be the landlord's home if the landlord lived there, but they don't, because they're renting it to the tenant.
1986··on Alberta to hold referendum on whether to remain in Canada
That's not true, a number of Jan 6 people were convicted of seditious conspiracy, it's just that those convictions have now been vacated because the coup plotters have now ended up in charge regardless through other means.
1986··on TSA lines are so out of control that travelers are hiring line-sitters
That's a feature, not a bug
1986··on iPhone and iPad approved to handle classified NATO information
Yeah, we're talking about the guy who leased a new car every 6 months in order to avoid having to put a license plate on it, and then parked it in handicap spots, right? Absolute same "rules for thee, not for me" energy
1986··on Platforms bend over backward to help DHS censor ICE critics, advocates say
It's not 2019 any more.
1986··on How SQLite is tested
This one is probably popping today because of the simonw post yesterday about using an LLM to basically one-shot port a lib across languages with the help of an extremely robust test suite
1986··on US Tech Force
So they gutted and destroyed USDS in order to... Create it again?
1986··on Icons in Menus Everywhere – Send Help
In practice, "egregious" in English never means very good
1986··on Canadian military will rely on public servants to boost its ranks by 300k
We have the opposite problem, where if you live in NYC or LA your vote basically doesn't matter at the national level
1986··on Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode fork
It could put you in Guantanamo Bay: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_F-91W#Usage_in_terrori...
1986··on Intel's retreat is unlike anything it's done before in Oregon
Being able to walk to the store "sounds worse than hell"?
1986··on Novo Nordisk will lose billions because it didn't pay a couple hundred dollars
The Marketwatch link, which is paywalled, just links here:

1986··on Cottagecore Programmers
a friend recently described bouldering - which I understand is also fairly popular with engineers - as something to the effect of "solving problems in a physical space with your body". this seems not dissimilar
1986··on The great Hobby Lobby artifact heist
The "heist", which presumably gets covered in part 2, is that a lot of these items were originally looted from Iraq after the US invasion in 2003. US Customs ended up seizing a lot of them, and about 15,000 items ended up having to be returned.

1986··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
DOGE's shared data has been consistently off: https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/doge-says-i... https://www.npr.org/2025/03/01/nx-s1-5313853/doge-savings-re... https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/03/us/politics/doge-musk-con...

And just to be clear - Occam's razor to you suggests that this project hasn't actually been defunded, but rather that the people working on this project have chosen to stop work on it in order to project the appearance that it has been defunded?

1986··on GSA Eliminates 18F
*Norquist
1986··on Elon Musk spells danger for Accenture, McKinsey and their rivals
Which was basically the point of the USDS, which has now been gutted of its original purpose and turned into DOGE
1986··on Our Big Oops
Really not enjoying the fascist-eugenic turn this place seems to be taking.
1986··on U.S. facing most intense flu season in at least 15 years
I also got this, felt like a cold that just took forever to clear. Wasn't covid, but didn't feel as bad as proper flu. I got my flu shot going into the season late last year.
1986··on Insomnia, Control
I find that I actually sleep worse the night I've worked out (3x / week)
1986··on Don't make fun of renowned author Dan Brown (2013)
> What I've realized is that the fame of the book is closely related to how interesting and unique the "elevator pitch” of the book. Which makes sense when you think about it; It's the elevator pitch that's spreading by word of mouth, not the book.

They call this "high concept"

1986··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
> The buyouts were not offered in a random fashion, however. We targeted them to reduce the layers of bureaucracy and micro-management that were tying Government in knots. We made sure that departments and agencies tied their buyout strategies to their overall plans to streamline their bureaucracies. As a result, almost 70 percent of our buyouts in the non-Defense agencies have gone to people at higher grade levels, such as managers.

this isn't how it's being done now

1986··on The Microsoft 365 Copilot launch was a disaster
WSL is a big improvement over the MinGW era
1986··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
No, it's not, but there's a spectrum of drug experiences. Scrolling social media is more like sitting in a shitty motel by yourself on a meth binge, or being on the nod.
