1970-01-01··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
It's the logic that is offensive. Mimically restated - The title isn't incorrect but it won't be misunderstood by few.

A synonym for offensive is disgusting.

1970-01-01··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
Clause change doesn't rescue the logic. If anything it makes it harder to process.

Refusing to hire junior engineers won't fix your actual problem.
Fixed. I would click that.
1970-01-01··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
I'm just staring at the title, wondering how this offensive, double-and-a-half-negative phrase made it all the way to the frontpage. I'm going to skip this one for that obvious reason.
1970-01-01··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Their source is Reuters and is literally the sub-headline. You did not read this article. Flagged.
1970-01-01··on Web Security is Too Hard
This isn't a secfail. Why is pay.cloudflare.com so hard to establish? Why does marketing always get to overpower engineering? I expect Cloudflare services to avoid some sketchy .pay TLD for exactly the reasons this person went through.
1970-01-01··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
Fun to witness all the things it got right, which we can now remark wasn't close at all. The dystopian robotic future exists somewhere in a Chinese factory if anywhere at all.
1970-01-01··on Critical CVE issued for hallucinated SQLite vulnerability
Exactly. CVEs shouldn't be allowed to be anywhere near critical without a working PoC or other proof.. Trust+verify.
1970-01-01··on Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant
For this we can just use our old friend uptime. Solar downtime is always daily unless you're in the arctic. Nuclear power will be at least 2 nines. Battery and solar, that is the hardest variable to measure.
1970-01-01··on Ten Ways NAS Is Getting Enshitified
The term got enshittified. Compare the definition over time via Wikipedia. Technically, NAS by the original definition can not host anything but a filesystem. It is simply free disk space, a SAN with a GUI. Anything you do to that disk space does not change what it is, until you start adding OS features, monitoring features, Wi-Fi, etc. Now it no longer is NAS - it is a server. We did this to ourselves.

1970-01-01··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
I don't understand this one. Yes, I want the long-life lightbulb. No, that doesn't somehow make it worse in every other way. The point is so obvious, I couldn't follow the logic in this argument. Nobody is buying or selling 120 Watt short-life bulbs to brag about their tremendous brightness. Long Life (LL) bulbs are not some kind of marketing ploy. We buy them understanding that we're going to minimize the hidden costs of making light, i.e. changing that bulb.
1970-01-01··on 67% of Americans worry leaders pressuring officials to alter election results
Very, very far. Corruption, failures in leadership, war, gerrymandering, and yet the press covers all of it and elections are being held on-time. Same as always, just at a higher concentration.
1970-01-01··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
Slap the 'organic' label on it and sell it at restaurants for $150k/L. It will sell.
1970-01-01··on The End of an Era
I've yet to read anything authored by AI that was truly excellent writing. It simply does not have the chops to write at that level. The great American novel will not be written by AI. Maybe "co-authored by Claude and friends", but not authored.
1970-01-01··on Show HN: Name100Challenge – name 100 famous women in 12 minutes
Yes, there's quite a lot of names that somehow don't qualify: Margaret Thatcher, Sacagawea, Joan of Arc, Marie Antoinette, yet Madonna and Janet Jackson works just fine.. its really more of a "do you know what pop-culture person I'm thinking of" game.
1970-01-01··on 67% of Americans worry leaders pressuring officials to alter election results
You can restate this after the November elections take place. Until then, America is still very, very far from real fascism.
1970-01-01··on Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick
No, and that's is the root of the problem. The buyer is happy and so is the seller. They don't care to understand what they're allowing and everyone is allowing it to happen.
1970-01-01··on Upper stage impacting the moon on 2026 August 5
That's the neat thing. Dumping on the moon or anywhere (other than Earth) isn't possible, as the litter is infinitely more valuable than the existing dust and rock. It's as if someone was dumping gold bricks into your yard. You really wouldn't mind at all, and would ask for more. The only exception would be radioactive waste, as that is less valuable than the surrounding dust and rock.
1970-01-01··on Why don't people use formal methods? (2019)
When I interviewed at AWS, I asked this question directly to their formal methods expert. Her response was two-fold:

1. All our code changes too much, we wouldn't be able to formalize it before it needed to change.

2. We already did this where we could, you just don't see it.

I didn't get the job and remain very skeptical on both answers. I think they just didn't have enough power internally to change the move fast and break everything culture for the better.

Forge a sell-all trigger and test it several times with just a minimum level transaction. Worst case is you sell a day or two ahead of the full pop.
1970-01-01··on The growing threat of Docusign phishing attacks (2024)
The threat was identified 2 years ago. This is a repost.
1970-01-01··on What's That Burning Smell?
>The heat is generated by the breaker itself, from the current.

Why do you think this?

>You can easily see how far the heat traveled simply by seeing where the insulation got blackened. It looks like just a few cm

Why do you think this? Copper is excellent at thermal conductivity, only beaten by silver.

1970-01-01··on Why has the display control panel pointer truncation bug gone unfixed for long?
For all the hard work they did with driver updates, actual driver management still sucks very badly. Simple concepts such as pinning a driver, something that could be a checkbox, requires edits to the registry or group policy: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/146562-prevent-windows-u...

They've jumped to conclusions.

1970-01-01··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
Everything I'm finding is showing the opposite with the exception of Microsoft experimenting with timber datacenters. Just looking at photos of DCs under construction shows they're all steel and concrete.
1970-01-01··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
A mason would be doing the concrete work. Metal studs and doors is usually done by the drywall and framer subcontractors - which could also be a carpenter - but drywall at datacenter or any commercial scale is almost always done by a framer and drywall specialist. They headline is using the wrong term.
